These speakers are the best you are going to find for the money. They are great party speakers but can also produce great sound quality. First off I want to warn you that these things are loud. They are great for Rock & Roll as well as home theater. There really isn't any need for a sub unless you want to bring down the neighbors house along with yours. I stongly recommend a high current amp to keep up with all that bass. For the money you won't find a speaker that can generate this kind off bass, be this clean and have as good of imaging as the DCM's. Add the center and 6's and you'll have a great matched home theater setup. For the money the best deal in all of Audioland.

Strength:

Warm midrange; Excellent bass goes way down low; loud and clear; excellent for HT and music beginner's pair

Weakness:

Bass could be tighter; tweeters could use some more clarity in sound reproduction

OK: First, to all those who complain about the weaknesses of this $150.00 speaker: What do you expect for $150.00? It makes no sense to compare this speaker to brands whose entry-level speakers are usually weak tinny garbage that will be blown out of the room by these. Find me a better overall speaker for the price purchased new at retail.

My criteria for these was pretty tough to meet for $300:
* Be good enough for HT without buying a sub (keep the neighbors happy); these may be a little loose bass-wise, but if I really cared that much I could: a) add dampening b) spend hundreds more for an upgrade, sub etc.

* Sound good with Jazz, Techno and 60's Rock. The 60's rock part is a non-issue because most of those recordings are analog and reveal their own defects; Jazz-wise they are warm enough for "Kind of Blue" and Coltrane and I can actually hear the deep lows emanating from the double bass without turing my amp to "11" or buying a $500 sub; The techno requirement is a non-issue: digital music made on digital equipment sounds just like what it is.

* Last a while. Despite the crappy box material the rubber surrounds are tough and I suspect will not blow anytime soon.

* Not color the music extensively. That sickens me, and these don't.

Summary:
This is a no-brainer for the newbie to the HT & home stereo world. Remember that when building an HT/music system in a jiff, the overall cost is high. Now, if I had a bigger budget, I'd look around, probably over to the Magnepan world, if I really wanted to head over to the high-priced no holds barred audiophile world--but that also presents a greater time/money investment that I don't feel like getting into just yet.

I recommed you take the 20mins required to head over to CC to demo these speakers. I guarantee you will be impressed at the sound-value ratio present in these.

Current low-budget super system:
Panasonic RV30 DVD
Yamaha HTR 5280
NAD 523 CD Changer
Oldest Surviving JVC VCR in existence (maybe?)
(2) DCM KX-12 Fronts, (1) KX-12 Center
(2) Klipsch rear surrounds (not a good match acoustically, but acceptable considering how little sound comes from them anyway)
All cheap monster XP cable
No sub needed (yet)

These things are loud as hell!!! Great sound! Its always fun to piss off the neighbors. I always like to play the ending of a song by Dr. Dre, after the song there is a 5 second pause and then it has Dr. Dre saying "smoke weed everyday!" I always turn my receiver all the way up then play it. People from all over my neighborhood can hear it, and have been wondering where its coming from. Its amazing how far sound travels, people from 2 blocks over hear me play that sound! Besides I recommend these for a good value!

Well i have a lot to say about these speakers. They are so awesome they rock. I know that some people on this page say that they do not have clear highs, but i listen to rap so it doesn't matter. The 12's in each of them bump. It is liking sitting in a movie theater. These speakers are also easy on my amp, and at 99 db sensitive the play very loud with little amp power. I have a Pioneer 300 watt amp with Dolpy Pro Logic soon to be replaced with Dolby Digital and DTS. If you are looking for loud huge bass speakers get these.

Can you say LOUD!!! WOW, I just got these monsters in the mail today, opened them up and my jaw dropped at the size of these BASS machines. Sound is unprecidented, bass is tight yet they drop LOW, mids are solid, and highs are smooth and clear. For the price these are the BEST speakers you could ever buy. So far these are the greatest speakers I have ever owned, and I had my share of speakers including Infinty, JBL ,Bose, and Cerwin Vega. THese DCM's put the Vegas to shame and at the 180$ I paid a peace for, these bad boyz scream!! All of you putting these down need to realize your probably comparing these to VERY expensive speakers like Paradigm, Pinnacle, and NHT's, you can't compare a pair of 4-500$ speakers to a pair of 5-10,000$ speakers. Either bad comparisons, or you are listening to the wrong music on these DCM's. These speakers are made for RAP, and all sorts of ROCK, not jazz or classical. If I was allowed to rate higher I would, But i give them a solid 5 stars!!!!

These speakers walk the tightrope between high sensitivity, phenomenal volume levels and good clean quality sound, making acceptable compromises in each to deliver them at an affordable price. They are indeed loud, and bass is much better than the run of the mill satellite sets that seem so popular nowadays. However, even the 12" woofer cannot substitute for a true sub. A small affordable sub ($300) will add a lot to these speakers and fill out the low range. The speakers themselves will reliably reproduce sound to around 50 Hz. The sub fills in the last bit. Personally, I have been extremely satisfied by the DCM KX2 line, rounding out the home theater with KX-10-2's, KX-center-2, and an 8" Energy sub. You will most likely be able to squeeze out better sound from comparably priced set of speakers. But they won't deliver the distortion free sound levels that the KX2's do with ease.

Strength:

These things are loud!!! (99db sensitivity) They handle incredible amounts of wattage.(500 watts RMS each is no problem) They have a realistic extremely dense sound. Depending on the recording the imaging is fabulous.

Weakness:

I really don't know if there are any at the price I paid.

The setup I use my DCM KX-12 Series Two floorstanding speakers involves the following components.(I'll focus on just what I've experienced primarily with CDs in stereo to start)

CD/DVD Player: Toshiba SD-3109 with HDCD capability for CD playback

Receiver: Yamaha RX-V795a

Amps: Two Gemini XG-2001 Amps connected to the main pre-outs of my receiver rated at 500 watts RMS mono into 8ohms at 1khz with a 98db signal-to-noise ratio. I bought these cheap mono-bridgeable DJ amps from competitionsound.com for 260 dollars each after shipping.

Listening Environment: I am seated about 18 feet from the two speakers that are about 6 feet apart(You have to be far from these speakers or else they will definitely overwhelm you will shear volume)

I'm not an expert on this sort of crap, but I must say that I've been more than satisfied with my purchase. I listen to a lot of classic rock and lately I've been cranking The Eagles with these and I've been extremely blown away by how incredible a song like "Take It Easy" sounds. The vocals are crisp, the bass is tremendous, and the volume is amazing. With a song like "Best of Times" from Styx you get a sense that the entire room is being enveloped by the chorus when all the band members kick in and sing,"The best of times!!!".(That is probably not going to make that much sense if you haven't heard the song) I really think that sort of a phenomenon is an example of good imagery. Sometimes songs just seem to be way too loud that are on the harder rock side, but I'm not sure if the distortion I'm seemingly hearing is caused by the speakers, or the crappy recordings. I would tell anyone to listen to some tunes by The Eagles and listen to how sweet these speakers sound when the vocal harmonies kick in when all the band members sing together. Great recordings with sound awesome with these speakers.

The results are equally impressive for home theater as these speakers provide an incredible punch to explosions and sound great at providing effects sounds for movies. I like to think that the DCM KX-12 Series Two speakers are very well rounded for there price.(I even listen to some John Williams on them and can't complain about how an orchestra sounds on these speakers) I didn't bother listening to more expensive speakers because I know I can't afford them anyway. If you can find these speakers anywhere then give them a try. You will not regret it. BTW, I bought these originally based on some of the reviews posted here.
