These are probably one of the best speaker buys out there. For the money you can't get much more sound quality in combination with power handling, bass extension, along with accurate mids and highs. Sure it's not a 1000 dollar speaker, but for costing a few hundred it can't be beat. These are especially good for rock/rap music, no sub needed! But they also work well in home theater situations. The only thing they're not for is jazz, classical, etc. but other than that, these rock!

Strength:

goes LOW in the bass, clean sounding, efficient, high power handling, warm spacious mids

Weakness:

for the price? NONE!!!

Unlike the last reviewer, I've heard $1000.00 speakers. Actually, my Klipsch CF-4 speakers costed about $1500.00. Unfortunately, they never sounded as good as the DCM KX-12 series 2. They never went as low in the bass, and had a much harsher high end because they tried to squeese mids and highs out of a horn that was just to big to do the highs properly. The overall flat frequency response and tonal balance just wasn't there with the Klipschs. Although the Klipschs had 2 12" speakers in each cabinet and that big horn, The DCMs go almost as loud as they did (and sound much more balanced with deeper bass).

I don't agree with all of the people who say the imaging is bad, or the tweeter is bad (sure it's kinda cheap looking).
Horn tweeters are very accurate, but can be unforgiving of a less than perfect setup. The output of the tweeter is usually a little high so the speaker can be used in larger rooms. Try toeing in the speakers for smaller rooms. Also pay close attention to setting the balance control properly.
I didn't have to use tone controls at all with these.

Also, I dont find that the bass is at all "boomy". It may be ever so slightly weak in the midbass making it more important to get the speakers "focused" by placing them properly. (makes it easier for your ears to guage the depth that the bass notes are coming from and seperate the initial note from reverberations). I think the quality of the bass from these speakers very good overall, and probably their best asset.

I got a good laugh out of the reviewer who recommended the PSB 300i over these speakers. I've owned those, and although they costed as much as the DCM's, I got more bass out of my Sony boombox than I did out of the 300i. There was also a BIG, GAPING, hole in the frequency response between the woofer and the tweeter because they used a soft dome tweeter that was too small. That tweeter had a really icky sound to it too.(stressing upper treble) I think alot of people are mistaking a lack of midrange for "clarity" these days. Did this reviewer ever hear the 300i? Don't think I'm knocking PSB. My brother has 800is and they sound GREAT!! Very similar to the DCMs actually. (a little more relaxed in the treble) I probably would have bought a pair of those if they still made them, but I would have spent more than I did on the DCMs.

Also, all of these people who say these speakers don't sound good loud are just clipping their recievers. I've got a Carver A-760x amp that puts out 380 watts RMS per channel, and I know I've fed the DCMs more than 200 watts on several occasions. The speakers did not complain at all.
They sounded clean, balanced and very very very loud.

So I guess what I'm trying to say here is, I can't imagine anyone ever being sorry they spent $400.00 on these speakers. I'm very impressed with the engineering and build quality that goes into these things for the money, or even more money. I think they do a pretty good job with all types of music and home theater. I've got to give them a 5 for value, and a 5 overall because I think value is a big part of the picture here. Also for the type of speaker they are (high power, high efficiency) I haven't heard much better period.

Strength:

Not a lot...seriously. They look impressive.

Weakness:

Boomy and real hollow sounding. Mids and highs were affected by the bass.

Well, I'm going to go against most of the reviewers with this one.

I have had the DCM KX10 Series 2 speakers hooked up to my Onkyo digital receiver. They sound great. Great range and clarity..you can hear every instrument. Well, the KX12's went on sale at Circuit City and they let you upgrade once within the first year so I thought I would. What could go wrong with the same highs with more bass kick?

Well, I'll tell you what. I hooked em up and they sound very hollow. Everything I listened to sounds like you are in a big pipe. After about an hour and a half of listening to a movie, I couldn't take it anymore. I adjusted every listening mode, bass and treble control and couldn't find anything that sounded good..the bass hit real low, almost too low for any of my music and the bass affected all of the mids and highs even when the bass was turned down...as if the treble and mids were fed through the woofer ports. They were nothing close to the quality of sound found in the KX10's.

So I took them back to Circuit City and got my old speakers back (the KX10's). Back to quality music again..if it ain't broke, don't fix it...

I would seriously stay away from the KX12's. I would suggest the KX10's with a powered sub if you want extra bass.

Strength:

Almost everything, great smooth bass, wonderfull hi's, and they are LOUD!!

Weakness:

kinda big... too bad... the sound makes up!

Hello fellow audio peoples! It's me again, I just wanted to give an update on how my speakers are holding up, not much different from last review, seamless, and loud operation. I have done some reserch on the design of this speaker, that goes (from top to bottom) midrage, tweeter, woofer. the desighn is to improve and quicken the bass responce of the speakers, the woofer is actually partially enclosed in it's own cabient with 2 ports, to make bass extremly tight, quick, and smooth, this alos improves the acoustics by preventing the cabinet from vibrating. And why the midrange is on top and the tweeter in the middle, I do not know for sure why, but here is my theory: To mix the hi's with the low's as quickly as possible. But whatever DCM's reson for the design happens to be, it sure dse sound great! I recently took my speakers out to our ranch outside in about an acre area of flat land for a cousins b-day party. By the way I have a Harman/Kardon 700 watt dolby digital, DTS reciver. Which will really push these things to their limits. At about 500 watts, the speakers were barley distorted at all, and still were loud and clear. Ok, I could go on and on about the pro's of the DCM's. now lets talk about con's, BIG!!! These things are huge, they weigh nearly 90 pounds each! They are really hard to move, and just try to find a place to put them! But the point of this message, is to say I still love my speakers after one year on the 28th.
