Strength:

sound, value, appearance, build quality. Tremendous for HT use and dichotomous for music listening. Excellent at mid-hi volume.

Weakness:

Aggravating at lower volume levels for music.

Positioning is key. I've tried subs in, subs out, angled to center, straight up, angled out, close to walls etc. I can't recommend where you'll need to place them but be prepared to muck around with these for a while. The work is worth the reward.

Tremendous sound and clarity. I just didn't have the $$ for the BP2000TL or I'd have bought them instead as they seem a bit fuller for horns and strings. Anyhow, get the volume up on these, not talking earth shaking levels here, and I guarantee you'll love them.

Strength:

Great tweeter with spacious, enveloping sound when positioned right. Tight, fast bass. Upper mids very good.

Weakness:

Lower mids and vocals a bit thin

Very good speakers. Soprano vocals are as pure as you'll hear anywhere and everything above that is sparkling and clear even at tremendous volumes. The bass from the built-in subs can shake your walls and the neighbors walls, too. But it's not just loud, it's clean and never muddy. Positioning is important with these, maybe a little more so than with monopoles if you like to have good imaging. Some experimentation with placement will pay off with a solid soundstage that has good imaging yet still provides the surrounding, all-around-you ambience that biploars are known for.

I do have a complaint about the crossover. though. At about 90 Hz or so the sound almost disappears. It's just in that very narrow range where the bass/mid drivers cut off and the subs come in. They don't overlap well, and the result is that male voices and lower female voices sound a little weak and thin. The sound in that range is not distorted, there's just not enough of it.

But the 2002TLs can amaze me with their clarity. They've made me very critical of the source material I use. Poor recordings cannot hide from these babies. They require lots of power and will soak up all you can provide. I use a Denon AVR-5700, 140 wpc, and can max it out with these and they never look back. The sound at high volumes is so clean that you don't realize how loud it is. Sometimes we'll be listening at what seems like average volume and then realize we are having to shout to hear each other!

But at lower volumes the thinness of the vocals is more apparent, unfortunately. Maybe that's why I find myself bumping up the volume all the time. A great value at it's discounted price point, but don't pay full retail.

Strength:

Accuracy, size of soundstage, bass

Weakness:

No serious weaknesses

I use these speakers 50-50 for 2-channel audio and 5.1-channel movies on DVD. In short, I'm very pleased with the performance for both applications. My full list of A/V equipment is:

Def Tech BP 2002TL (mains)
Def Tech CLR 2500 (center channel)
Def Tech BP2X (surrounds)
Onkyo Integra DTR-7 A/V receiver
Toshiba 6200 progressive scan DVD
Sony 32XBR400 TV
Monster Power HTS3500 power filtration

I listen to a wide range of music, from classical to blues and sometimes current rock/pop. I find that the bipolar speakers produce a very convincing impression of a "large" sound source, which is particularly nice for orchestral music. The speakers also have a very nice mid-range, which gives excellent reproduction of the human voice.

The best feature of the integrated subwoofers is the fact that they're matched and crossed over very nicely with the non-powered cones. Provided that you set them up properly, you get natural sounding, tight and musical bass. Before buying the Def Techs, I tested the Cambridge Soundworks Tower IIs at home along with a CS subwoofer, and they did not blend together at all well for music.

For movies, these speakers are fantastic. The main problem is a temptation to turn them up too loud for the neighbors to bear.

Strength:

crystal clear highs, great bass, wide range

Weakness:

none

I bought these for "music only" speakers in a separate room(I have my HT located in another area of the house-all def techs) I chose the Bp2002tl's as a result of their full-bodied music ability. Many speakers loose their ability to maintain their wide range when turned down low. These def techs sound fabulous at all volumes. Listening to jazz late at night with the volume low, you can hear the bass thumping as well as clear mids and highs. turned up, they outright rule. These babies can take a beating. the bass just keeps on comming louder, clearer, tighter.
these speakers hear all types of music pass through them. They seem to love it all. Classical, blues, rock, and all the new stuff.
I did try them in my HT as the mains. They absolutely rock for HT. Thunderous bass. I couldn't be more pleased.

Strength:

- Clear mids/highs, super powerful bass
- Bipolar immerses you in sound, its totally non-directional. The sound feels like its all around you

Weakness:

?

I've got four of these hooked up to a Denon 5700 receiver and a CLR2000 centre channel. How can people say these aren't good for music? They are super clear and the bass and mids/highs are separated so when you turn up the bass it doesn't send it to the mid range and tweeters so there is NO DISTORTION. Hell, I even heard some details in my favorite songs that I didn't even notice with my Energy EXL.25's. For home theatre they are awesome, forget the movie theatre, this is where it's at. They are super powerful and punchy. It is true that you need a powerful amp to get good volume. With a Denon AVR5700 (140 watts/channel) at half volume, you come away with a head and ear ache because its so loud. The four subs are so powerful that they rattle things around upstairs! For music they're phenominal, for HT they're the best there is. (except maybe the 3000's.....)

Strength:

Excellent soundstage and sound quality, bass output eliminates need for separate sub, good looks

Weakness:

none yet

I've only had these speakers for a couple of days, and I haven't even started to play around with optimum speaker positioning and placement yet...just out of the box, one on each side of the widescreen, connected to a Pioneer VSX-26TX (THX) receiver and Sony DVD player. Due to their bipolar design, the sound fills up the room and gives me an almost total "surround" experience without any rear speakers attached. With the subwoofer volume-level at the 1 o'clock position, LFE effects were really felt more than just heard...all in all very impressive and probably the best HT speakers (that I've owned/auditioned) for their ~$800/each price.

I can't even imagine how much better they'll sound when I finally get them properly placed in the room!

My salesperson told me that speakers of this design perform best when placed at least 18 inches away from the wall (rear of speaker to wall) and slightly toed in...then again, it all depends on the geometry of your listening environment.
