Strength:

Excellent overall performance when used with expensive equipment. Outstanding sound stage, sounds great with movies and music.

Weakness:

Midrange and upper end suffer when used with cheaper equipment (such as recievers), making an investment in the amp and pre-amp important (can get costly if you are looking for an affordable speaker to use with affordable equipment)

I first bought these speakers as part of a more conservative system (Denon AMP and CD Player). When searching for a pair of speakers in this price range nothing really did come close. Most offering from other "high-end" speaker manufacturers in this price range tended to sound too "soft" or warm. The BP8's were very open and dynamic. The overall sound was well balanced (liked them better than the BP10's!!!). They also sounded great will all types of music.

As I started upgrading my equipment to the above mentioned components (Similar Products Used) in preparation for a higher-end speaker, these speakers went from very good to outstanding!!

The midrange and upper-end started sounding more like a $2500 speaker. Really!! The low end just kept getting better than it already was. Of course most will not be running these speakers with such equipment, but I would say take your time and search for a good sounding amp or receiver to match up with these speakers.

Today there is a lot more competition out there for the BP8's, but when you take into consideration sound quality, floor standing full-range, affordability, good looks, sounding good with all types of music, and room to grow with your source components, these are a great Bang-For-The-Buck speaker. And if you are shopping for a speaker in this price range and want to give a listen, make sure the dealer has then hooked up to something good, the speakers DO deserve good source components...

My components include: Aragon 8008 amp, Audible Illusions Pre, Parasound Ultra DAC2000 and Ultra Belt Transport

I auditioned 50+ speakers and went with these. I agree, the speakers do have any understated midrange, but I like that... it is a little gentler on your ears when you are really cranking it. You still need a sub however, to get truly awseome performance. I A/B these speakers with the best of em'... Paradigms (which have better bass), B&W, Atlantic Tech. and I though they had the best overall sound to my ears. I bought the original BP8's for my parents three or four years back and they still sound great... and the BP8B's are even better. 5 stars!

Excellent cabinet constructions, good, extended bass, BUT
too bright, too metallic, bad sounding midrange, and
a 4th order Linkwitz-riley Xover wich directs the
sound to your feet, and made of cheapoleto
electronics....

I purchased a pair of deftech bp8's a year ago. for the money, i'm extremely impressed. i've listened to speakers costing $1000 more that just didn't compare. even some of deftech's more expensive models don't sound as realistic. the bass is awesome considering that each speaker only uses two 5.25 inch woofers. the bipolar setup creates unbelievable imaging (i listened to comparable and more expensive mirage bipolars and they sucked). the only drawback to these speakers is that alternative music with thrashy guitars sounds well... thrashy and a little annoying at times. also, home theater with these speakers is an incredible pleasure.

I just bought a pair of BP 8 and a pair Pro-Cinema Surround, Pro Sub, Pioneer VSX-07Tx AC-3 and THX cert. The set-up , configurations I would say is superb. The sound quality , the surround , you could even hear a tictile sound down to the lowest possible. The clarity is your money's worth...

Excellent speaker, but not out of the box. At least 30 hours break-in is absolutely required. I bought my pair 18 months ago, recently upgraded the mains to the BP2004's and relegated the BP8's to the rear surround. For home theatre this is about as good as it gets for the price!
Position is everything, tilt them back and angle them inward. Make sure you leave enough space from the side and rear wall for them to breath and you will be amply rewarded.

I was about to give up on my BP8's and go to something else. Man, the highs wereabout to kill me. WAY, WAY too harsh. Mine are older models, not the ones with
the new tweeters. I have heard them and they are a lot smoother. I contacted
Def Tech and found that the tweeters are not retrofitable. They suggested that
I install a 1 ohm, 10 watt resistor on the positive side of each tweeter. What
did I have to lose? I did this and it made an impressive difference. Still not
as smooth as I would like but MUCH better than before. I didn't lose any high
end extension and they still image the same. Give this 10 minute upgrade a try
if your BP8's are causing you pain in the highs. It really does make a noticable
difference. I actually like them again. I give the resistors 4.5 stars!

I have had many years of experience with Def. Tech's product. I have owned numerous speakers from this company, and I have not been disappointed with 'em one bit. My BP8B's easily are the best sounding two-way tower's I have ever listened to. If anyone is not accustomed to the enveloping sound of bi-polar speakers...these surely should be heard to be believed!I agree that they could use a little more bass extension...but what you do get with two 5 1/4's in each speaker is quite remarkable. Supplementing these with a decent sub should round out the sound (I am currently using an M&K V-75 II, a great sub by the way).

I've had these speakers set-up at home for a month and they are worth every Canadian dollar I spent on them. My listening area is a bit tough to set up for optimum speaker performance but with a little bit of to and fro'ing and a tweak or two the bi-polar configuration of the BP8s sounds excellent. Good god it's nice to hear all them notes where they belong!!! I don't normally post a "top" rating for anything but 4 stars ain't nearly good enough.
And if you want 'em -- see the previous postings from either Mssrs. Styre or
