Strength:

Great Value

Weakness:

None that I can think of

I was all set to buy the Polk RM6500, I even went in to listen to them for almost an hour. As an after thought I asked the salesman to switch over to the Definitive ... I instantly heard the difference. After trying lots of different music and playing with the EQ on the receiver in the store, I knew that what I was hearing was real.

So I bought the ProCinema 80's instead.

They sound great and I can't believe the value they offer.

I've listened to CD's and DVD's that I've heard hundreds of times before and they sound so fresh and alive it's unbelievable. I'm glad I made the choice to go with these.

Strength:

Wide range of sound that is clear, price

Weakness:

Long break in time period, about a month for me.

The sound is surprisingly wide and has good definition on vocals and instruments. Main problem is breakin time is quite long. I'm not complaining cause they sound awesome now. Music sounds like music with outstanding clarity. Movies however are what I use them for and they completely rip through movies leaving no mercy with the earth shaking sub. You got to check out the sub, it blows away the other subs in sat systems by a wide margin. The bass is clean and tight and there is no negative feedback. Damn good speakers for under a grand.

Strength:

high quality sound, powerful subwoofer

Weakness:

a bit expensive

I just purchased these for full price about 3 months ago. But I feel that this is a smart purchase due to the quality. I really never cared about speakers and thought they were all the same, but this system surprised me when I heard it at a local audio store. My best bud owned a Jamo system and bragged everytime I went to his house how good they were. I listened to the Pro Cinema system 80 and found it to be a tremendous improvement over my friends Jamo system. I purchased them, they are very difficult to find discounted. The speakers are solidly built and sound wonderful out of the box. But the audiophile at the store I spoke to said that it would sound better after a certain breakin period. About 20-40 hours. I also found that info on the speaker manual. I am very pleased and recommend this system for music purists and movie buffs who want great sound.

Strength:

Sound, and nice size of speakers to hide away

Weakness:

not to great sounding until a few hours of breakin time

I love these speakers. I never listened to them at a store, because the nearest one is so far from where I live, I bought them on the basis of the reviews on this site, through mail order. I previouly owned the Bose speakers and thought they were the darndest things in the world until I hooked up these little Def Techs. First off there was way more detail and the midrange was so clean and clear. The bose in comparison sounded harsh, muddy, and quite irritating. I can't believe my wife wasted money on those crappy speakers. I hope I can return them. Anyway the sub was the big surprise, it absolutely killed the sub that came with the bose speakers. This thing blasted through action scenes and shook me silly. The bose couldn't shake a feather if it were placed next to it. Wholeheartedly recommended. Great thing is that these are far superior to bose and they cost about the same.

Strength:

The ONLY sub/sat system that has midrange! Look no further - you're wasting your time!

Weakness:

Not enough people know about this system.

First off, I know that no audiophile in the world would agree that a small sub/sat system can sound as good as full-sized, reference series, floor-standing speakers. Clearly, you cannot achieve the same level of sound from sub/sats as you can with huge woofers, studio-grade tweeters, and high-end subwoofers.

That said, after reviewing every high-rated sub/sat system that audioreview users suggested, for the life of me I cannot see spending more than $1000 on a home theater system. As listed above, I spent nearly 6 weeks going to every high-end audio shop in metro Detroit. Absolutely NOTHING comes close in qulaity, sound and value to the Definitive Technology Procinema series. In all honesty, for about $200-$250 more than the highly touted Klipsch and Energy speakers, this sytem makes those sound PATHETIC! While I thought that the all of the speakers I compared sounded excellent for home theater use, NONE of them sounded remotely decent for music. Def Techs and Boston Acoustics (see comment below) were the only systems that accurately reproduced music. Don't let store clerks fool you by having you "test" their systems with movies like the "Matirx". Remember that all of the sounds in movies are "fake" - they are created by foley artists and master editors. Think about it, how many people really know what laser blasts, nuclear explosions and tornados sound like! Load does not mean accurate! Bring your favorite CDs and be prepared to spend at least an hour in the store.

Personally, I purchased the Procinema 80 series - my room is only about 15x20 with 8' ceilings. I thought that the 100 series sounded a little bit richer, but the more compact size of the 80s and their incredible sound was what sold me. A cool thing about Def Techs is that you can mix and match any components from the 80, 100 and 200 series - they are all acoustically matched.

My second choice would probably be the Boston Acoustic System 9000, though it is a distant second. The Def Techs were actually about $100 cheaper and IMO, had much better midrange reproduction. Yes, you could let an audiophile convince you that a more expensive, floor standing system would sound better. They are probably right. But it comes down to the law of diminishing returns...I truly think that you would be hard-pressed to spend much more money and notice a DRAMATIC improvement in sound quality - particularly for the typical listener with the typical price constraints. LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THIS SYSTEM!

Solidly built - Excellent Value

I have had my DT setup for about 4 months and have loved them. I had debated for some time between these and the Bose setup and the DT 80's blew them away.

I must give credit to the Home Theater Store in Houston, they gave me an incredable deal on a number of home theater products.

The only thing that i had to play with was the bass, it sounds great once you play with it some, just needs a little tweaking. everything else sounded great out of the box.

They are an excellent value, they cant touch the much higher end systems but for the money they are the best in class.

I actually mixed and matched the 80 subwoofer and rear speakers with the 100s for the front because I just thought they sounded much more like full-size speakers. In any case... add me to the list of people who think there is no better setup for the money (or even twice the money). I get incredibly crisp, well-balanced sound from my laserdiscs and DVDs in a room whose layout is frankly fairly terrible for this kind of thing. I can't recommend these highly enough over some of the other (admittedly good) better known home theater choices like the Bose systems.

Strength:

Aluminum cone tweeters and a 250 watt sub. All for under $1,000

Weakness:

None that I'm aware of.

Well, anyone who has spent some time looking, listening, and reading reviews knows this is the best Home Theater package under $1,000. The Boston Acoustics System 9000 is close, but Def Tech just does a better job with the sub.

If you're looking for a good price and excellent service, call Marc at The Audio Shop.

Marc had the speakers at my door in two days at a price that the local dealer wouldn't touch.

I just bought a pair of these speakers and they're sitting in my car. Can't wait to get home after work and check them out for the back speakers to complete the 7.1 channel system I have. They're the perfect size, seem solid, and from all the reviews they're going to be awesome. Folks, for the money, you absolutely cannot find a better speaker.

Strength:

Sound quality on music and movies, small speakers that are built like tanks

Weakness:

None

Purchased these at a local store and found the sound to be expansive and detailed. The articulation during song #3 on The Best Man Soundtrack sounded unbelievable. I couldn't believe that so much quality sound could come out of a small speaker. I assembled and tried the speakers in my house for home theater and was blown away by the sub that shook the ground below my feet. My brother thought there was an earthquake. The instructions on how to set up every speaker was very informative. I never really knew how to set up a sound system and now I know how. After the breakin period these babys could handle extremely loud volumes without breakup or distorion. I recommend this system for those who want to invest in a system that will last them many, many years. Have a listen and you'll be inpressed.
