I just bought a pair of audience 52s new. The sound from 52s is much similar to contour 1.1s. The 52s are brand new, so there should be at least 200 hours to break in. As a new pair, the 52s offer a bit more bass than 1.1s, but not as smooth as 1.1s, and I think the 52s would be smooth enough after their break in period. The 1.1s sometimes sound too bright when play pop music, but sound perfect in classic music. The 52s also has the advantage in classic music. I don't think the 52s and 1.1s has big difference like their price difference.

Strength:

very transparent, neutral, dynamic, smooth tweeter, punchy boomer : good voices, very good guitars (acoustic or electric bass), very good drums. All types of music ( rock, electro, voices, acoustic music, jazz, classical ) can be heard with them with high fidelity ( it is very rare !!!).

Weakness:

A amplifier with a minimum of power. Best it is, best is the result.

( previously, i'm french and i doesn't write very well in english, excuse me ) 4 months ago, i changed my amplifier for a very good one ( Isem XTASIS 2, a french model, around 1500€, 60W/8 Ohm, 90W/4 Ohm ), smooth, dynamic, extremly rapid. It was time to change my speakers ( Jamo E610: very good plaisure and confort but lack of transparence ). I have heard first Dynaudio CONTOUR S 1.4 (Sound was beautiful, church music was very realist, magnific voices, with Simaudio MOON I3 amplifier !!!) but my amplifier is too short ( lack of power ). So i have heard Dynaudio AUDIENCE 42 : very good, transparent, good bass for the size, but a little lack for the lower spectre. So i have asked to test the 52. Two weeks ago, with my amplifier, my source ( Micromega MINIUM CD3 ) and 20 CD, i returned to test the 52, just arrived. 20 CD after, i have bought these speakers without any doubt : very transparent, dynamic, with high quality of bass ( but less than CONTOUR 1.4 ). 86 Db and 4 Ohm but now, my amplifier was not too short. Dynaudio quality was reacheable for me !

Strength:

Overbuild in the driver components, large voice coils and magenet structures etc. So neutral a midrange. Great bass for such a small monitor. Nice imaging, very easy to listen too for a long time.

Weakness:

you're kidding right???...Read Review for more..

I hate speakers that just can't take it easy on the midrange and still give me the detail I want. Dynaudio has done it right with an easy on the ears midrange. Running solid state Rotel and a Tube preamp by Anthem, and even with a Ruthlessly revealing Sony XA-7es Compact Disc player which can on some speakers be just down right painful. Not the players' fault by the way. Listening to Allison Kraus & Union Station.."New Favorite", I am rewarded by Allisons' smooth voice without any sybalance and edge like all my other speakers I had. So I guess I gave away the highs too. Very smooth and easy, the textile dome tweeter pays great dividends. The bass is very quick and has great extention concidering the size. The Dobro Guitar had a nice full tone, and the percussion section comes in just great. My room is huge and concidering the small little dimensions of the 52' I couldn't be more amazed. My next listen will be Pat Matheny, and Charles Hayden and get lost in the music. Thanks, M.T., for the help. I knew Dynaudio was great before considering the "Evidence" of the build. Double Magnet structure, huge voice coil for the size of the woofer etc. A greater value..IHMO a better value you will not find. So go ahead and give them a listen.

Strength:

Mid and high frequencies. Reconstruction of the soundstage. Incredible dynamic.

Weakness:

The first 3 octaves are a bit weak (remember the 6.5" mid-woofer) They need a high current amp

I'm a sound engineer. I bought this little speakers for my home system as a replace for my old B&W DM560. Now i'm using them as my near field monitor in my studio. The 80-250 Hz range is punchy, tight and dynamic; the 250-4000 Hz range is simply beautiful (voices are exactly where expected); the high frequencies are crisp and not fatiguing at all. Now i'm running them with a sealed DIY subwoofer and the sound is amazing, but just because i need to hear correctly the first 3 octaves. I don't think you need any sub in a domestic use. One month after the purchase, three sound fellows replaced their near field monitors with these incredible speakers. Home system: Integrated amplifier Rotel RA980BX Cd player Marantz CD 4000 (modified with a double power supply and a tube output stage)

Strength:

Clarity, sonic precision, build quality, size, adaptability to different placements.

Weakness:

Limited bass, but as I get older bass has become more annoying anyway.

After investigating a number of ~$1K range bookshelfs I chose the 52s for their precise imaging and overall quality. The 42s are very good, but I couldn't leave the 52s in the store after a lengthy comparison across a number of musical genres. I also compared them to the Contour 1.1s and unless you must have wood cabinets I'd think long and hard. I think for a 52 owner the 1.3mkII is the logical next step. On another forum someone quoted a Dyn engineer saying that the 52s "came out too good." As a consumer I'll gladly take advantage of that "mistake"!

Strength:

Small and subtle looking. Full, warm, great imaging, surprisingly efficient with bass response. Wonderful with acoustic guitarss

Weakness:

None so far

Purchased these Audience 52's to replace my ADS L780's that are 15 years old and, well, just too darn big and unsightly. I was amazed at how much fuller the sound is with these "little" speakers. I absolely love them. Thinking about adding the audience 42 center speaker for movie viewing. Listening to Steely Dan this morning and noticed how much I had been missing for so many years before upgrading to these wonderful speakers.

Strength:

Pretty sound.

Weakness:

None so far.

I just bought this pair of speakers a few days ago. I am really satisfied with them. The speaker I had been using previously was Bose 301-4. Well, no doubt Dyn 52 sounds much better than Bose 301-4 in general. What I want to point out is that the Dyn 52 sounded better than Bose 301-4 even when it played rock music, to my surprise. Ths same song sounded rather prettier with Dyn 52, so it could be dispointing to those who enjoy noisyness of rock music, though. It was remarkable that Dyn 52's 6.7 inch woofer gave deeper bass than Bose 301-4's 8 inch woofer. I had considered B&W CDM1NT, Tannoy Saturn S6, PSB Image 5T, JBL LX2005 before buying Dynaudio Audience 52 and Dyn 52 sounded best for me. Power Amp: Inkel(Sherwood) AM-8500G (230W per channel, 8 ohm) Speaker Cable: Van Den Hul Clear-water

Strength:

Natural sounding, great soundstaging, tight fast bass; smooth, yet fast and very dynamic.

Weakness:

4 ohm impedance. But my B&K receiver drives them with no effort. Note that you can now get real wood veneer for a 10% surcharge.

A rating of 4.87 on AudioReview should speak for itself, but I will add my thoughts anyway... I wanted to upgrade my PSB Alpha A/V setup, so I did a ton of research on speakers in the $1,000 range. I was really biased towards the B&W CDM-1 NTs - hey, if What?HiFi and Stereophile can both agree on that speaker, it should be perfect for me, right? Wrong. I walked into Sound Factor in Santa Monica, and walked out with the Dynaudio Audience 52s instead. Now, the B&Ws are great speakers, but I spent hours doing A/B listening to both speakers (and some Linn speakers as well). Everything from Rock to Classical to Pop to R&B. They even let me bring in my Mission 780s and PSB Alphas for comparison listening (great service, btw). The B&Ws were very dynamic, with nicely extended bass, but the treble was way too forward to me. I had heard great things about the NT tweeter, but I could already feel the fatigue setting in after about 15 minutes of listening. Switching to the Dynaudios was like taking a bright light out of my eyes (um, ears...) Wow - what an open, dynamic, natural, smooth sound... You can talk all day about the Audience 52s great soundstaging, fast dynamics, seamless transition between the drivers, natural vocals, tight bass, and fatigueless sound, but forget all that techno-speak... The speakers possess that elusive 'sparkle' that I was dying for... I want to be involved with the music... With the Dynaudios, you tap your toes and sing along... You forget that you are hearing sound from speakers. Try listening to Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours', or any Steve Miller song on these guys, and you will be singing along with a big smile on your face. Alicia Keyes sounds like she is in the room with you. Now, as good as the B&Ws are, the Audience 52s are $300 less, and were literally sweeter music to my ears. Now, granted, the PSBs are $700 less (a great speaker for the price, by the way), but the PSBs are just far less involving. The Mission 780s (also a decent speaker for their price) have a 'slightly' sweeter sound (more colored, maybe?), but are just far less dynamic, and sound very veiled and constipated compared to the Audience 52s. BTW, I have about 25 hours on the Audience 52s, so they still need some more break-in time. I can't wait - the sound just keeps getting better. They are great with home theater, too, by the way. Strength:

Tight bass response, transparent, soundstage is superb, imaging, can handle a ton of good clean power, size, price, beautiful mids and highs.

Weakness:

No real weakness. But the more clean power the better for these speakers. Don't worry they won't blow. If I can run a tandberg 3016A through them I doubt power handling limit is a concern.

I am now playing these through a Tandberg 3016A amp and a tandberg 3018A preamp. The 3016 pumps out 400 watts into 4 ohms and that's a coservative rating. I saw a review that said it does 460 watt per channel before clipping at 4 ohms. These speakers just sing with this amp, and they can take it as well. They're just amazing. I call them giant killers!
