Strength:

Clear highs, deep bass, very efficient, good imaging

Weakness:

A bit shrill or honky at higher volumes, induces listening fatigue at high volumes.

Although in my listening room levels of 80-85 dB seem very loud, I felt that these Energy speakers would not do well in my home. Even with good, separate amp/preamp source, these speakers became shrill at anything more than moderate volume. For apartment dwellers or individuals who prefer (unrealistically) quiet music, these may represent a good value. But if they will be used as part of a home theater, or if you like to crank it up occasionally, I would consider something else. At least make sure you like the sound when they are cranked up before settling on these speakers. I ended up with the Vandersteens, and i will be posting a review soon.

Strength:

great bass mids, highs, good soundstage, dynamics and detail. The better the gear, the better the sound!

Weakness:

none

This is a response to R. Neuffer below.Speakers must have sufficent power to properly control the cones and tweeters.Underpowered receivers cranked up have destroyed many good speakers. The better the system the better that these speakers will sound. They do everything just right if there are no weak links in the system!

Strength:

good clarity and imaging

Weakness:

bass, but that is what a subwoofer is for

I just got my Energy e:XL 26's with the e:XL 12S subwoofer. They sound excellent together. I don't have them set up ideally since I am still in college and my room doesn't allow it. I am still breaking them in, but have listened to several CD's and two DVD's. The sound is very clear. I hear details on the CD's and DVD's that I never knew where there. Imaging is excellent. Vocals sound as if the person is in the room. I highly recommend these speakers. Much better than Polk. Polk Rt600 cost almost the same and don't offer nearly as much for the money.
