Strength:

Deep tight bass. Loud subwoofer. will rock any home. A definite addition to any home theater set-up.

Weakness:

At extremely low levels you begin to here some port noise. Not to noticable. Only occurs when I push it to its limits.

This sub goes extremely low for the money you pay for one. $600 to $700. A must buy if you are on a budget. This sub out preforms some subs I have heard that are twice the price. I am a huge Paradigm fan. I have all Paradigm front, center, and surround sound speakers. The Monitor series to be exact. I wanted a PW subwoofer from Paradigm but could not get away from the sound of this e:XL 12. It was the perfect addition to my already perfect set-up. Everything is powered by my Yamaha RX-V 995 reciever.

Strength:

Great bass and depth

Weakness:

None

This sub really gets down to the bottom depths. Using an SPL meter and AVIA, I confirmed this sub goes down all the way to 22hz. But how does it sound? Great! Very musical for CDs, very powerful on DVD movies. At about $500 US, this is one of the best values around. Matches with my Energy C6 mains nicely (using Sony 555ES receiver) and AC300 center. Highly recommended.

The exls12 is big step from exls8 sub. The exls12 is large enough to produce bass for a large room. This sub is highly recommended for the exl-series or the con-series. I would stay away from exls10, just not enough difference in the 8 and 10 to warrent the extra money. A wise upgrade would be going from the exls8 to exls12 sub. If anyone wants to purchase any energy speaker product, do email me, I will connect you to a Canadain dealer, who will ship anywhere.

Strength:

deep, solid bass; beautiful finish; construction; good price

Weakness:

slight port noise

This sub will rock your house! And it's not boomy bass I'm talking about, but rather gound-pounding, wall-shaking bass you can feel. The bass response is quite good, considering it's a 12" driver in a ported enclosure (I was used to the tightness of sealed subs).

Regarding port noise, I was a bit disappointed to find that the reviews below are accurate. I read about the port noise issue before, but I didn't think it was significant enough to detract me from buying it. When playing extremely low frequencies (gotta be close to 20-30Hz, since I can barely hear it, but rather feel the vibration), there's indeed port noise if you turn up the volume. However, just as the previous reviews didn't discourage me from getting this sub, I want to point out that this is a very minor issue, and there's no reason to step away from this sub because of port noise.

Overall I love this thing and it makes movies and music come alive! (absolutely unnecessary when I listen to classical though...) I recommend this sub strongly.

Strength:

Looks nice.

Weakness:

Too much port noise and lacks the better performance of its competitors in this price range.

I spent quite a bit of time with this sub. within an acoustic (and equipment) I'm quite familiar; and subjected it to a barrage of tests that are important to me as an audiophile.

Using selections from "C.J.'s Baker's Dozen" to ascertain its performance (in that given room with its associated equipment), the overall performance was disappointing (knowing what can be had for the money). Though it's not a bad model per se, it is certainly not class-leading. For that aspect, one may look no further than Athena Technologies' P3.

Strength:

Good lows, tight bass

Weakness:

slight port noise when pushed to its limits

I just bought this sub along with my Energy e:XL 26's. This sub matches these speakers perfectly. I am impressed with how much quality bass this sub can produce. When I say quality I mean tight and low (20Hz). When it is pushed it does produce some port noise, but not very noticable. At these levels the sub is not straining. I highly recommend this sub, I am even thinking of buying a second one when I have the money.
