Beautiful, flat response. Excellent dispersion. Seamless response

Weakness:

I have owned a pair of Epicure 20+ speakers since 1978. These are floor standing speakers that use two of Epicures' 'modules', which consists of an 8" woofer and the 1" 'air spring' tweeter. The modules in this model have the drivers positioned side by side (one woofer, one tweeter), and one module faces forward, the other faces up at about a 45 degree angle to reflect the sound into the room. The effect is a 'sound sphere' that makes the speakers disappear. The 'sweet spot' is the entire listening area!
I drive them with a Yamaha 2020 of the same era, and run them absolutely flat, with a low filter at 15hz rolling off 12 db per octave. THis is the system I have had for 22 years, and even though I have listened to many others, I have no desire to change! If ( and that is a BIG if) you find a set of these speakers for sale, you will not go wrong by purchasing them. If you don't like them, please e-mail me with a price you will sell them for!!. I have a tweeter starting to crack in my 20's. I would to buy a set (2) of original EPICURE tweeters if anyone has them.. Not EPI, please. While the EPI's are great ( I have a set of 100's also) Epicure put thier best in the Epicure line. Please e-mail if you have aset or know where I can get them.
Regardless of which Epicure product you might buy, you will be highly satisfied!!

Bought my EPI 100 in 1975 when I was 18 years old. They are still used as my main speakers. Driving them with a harman/kardon 630, I still think they provide an excellent sound in the various types of music that we enjoy.

Strength:

Very clean and lush sounding speaker, very detailed.

Weakness:

None.

The actual model I have is the 202. I purchased them in 1975 and have loved them ever since. I would like to buy some new speakers but havn't found a speaker that sounds quite like these. Besides, I think I would have a hard time getting rid of them. I think I would have to spend 2K just to get close to the sound of these well made speakers. If you get a chance to buy a pair don't hesitate. They are worth looking for!

Strength:

total overall performance and sound quality

Weakness:

nothing at all

I got a pair of EPI 100's from my grandparents, whom weren't using them anymore. At the time I had no idea they would be such a good set of speakers at all. My dad told me they were really awesome, he used to be in the pro audio biz, so I took his word for it. Well anyway, I have a Denon DRA-95VR, which I like alot and before I got the EPI's I just had a pair of JBL's and they are a decent pair of speakers. I had been wanting something better though, so I took the EPI 100's from my grandparents. (I dont think they can hear very well apparently, cuz they GAVE 'em to me, yes for FREE)

I love listening to music, all kinds. Mostly classic rock such as Hendrix and Zeppelin, and various newer bands. All genre's too... from Metal to Classical. Dosen't really matter what you listen to, these speakers will sure make the music come alive.

Yes, these speakers are older than I am, but as with many things... "they don't make 'em like they used to" I will never give them up!!

Strength:

Clean sound, awesome tweeter, tight punchy bass

Weakness:

As for many other reviewers of this speaker, my EPI 100s were my first pair of real speakers. I got them in high school for $99 bucks each (they were closeouts on the real walnut veneer model) with the money from my first real summer job. At the time, they blew away anything owned by my friends. These speakers have been battered and beaten, moved about 20 times (including back and forth to four years of college) and one even fell down a flight of stairs, but they still sound better than most anything else I've heard. I finally got the bug to "upgrade", and the only speakers I can find anymore that come close to the sound quality of the EPI's start at around $1,500 bucks a pair. I'll be buying a pair of Paradigms for my front mains soon, and moving the EPI's to the back of the room for surrounds.

Strength:

The sound from the EPI 100 is clear and very natural. Audio representation is true to what the musician and or sound designer had in mind. Just my humble opinion.

Weakness:

Speakers are old and the foam around the woofer is deteiorating. Is that a familiar comment?

I purchased my EPI 100's in the early 1980's. I can't remember how much they cost. I need to have the foam around the woofers replaced. The speakers work fine otherwise. I found a place in Burbank called Speaker City U.S.A.. They say they can repair just the foam for $65 each and the speakers will still retain that EPI quality. I am asking you audiophiles if this is what I should do? Is this my best option to regain the quality the speakers once had? I have also been to humanspeakers.com's website, but I am not sold if that option is the best. If you think one of these ideas is better than the other, have any information about Speaker City, or know of a better solution please e-mail me. Thank you.

Strength:

Very natural and smooth sound.

Weakness:

None at this price and quality.

I absolutely cannot believe everyone's writing about this speaker! It great! I think that these were the best speaker I ever bought. I bought them in the early 80's and was driving them with Yamaha separates. C-4 pre-amp and M-4 power amp. The sound was incredible! It was very smooth and natural!
Like a fool I was in my younger days, I need more bass and ended up blowing the speaker with a dynamic range expander and 120 watts of power. I was so mad at myself..
Foolish youth....... Didn't take care of a good thing.
I liked these speakers so much that my heart jumped when I saw the review. I was hoping somebody was making them again!
It's very interesting. These were not very expensive speakers but they sounded excellent. Some speaker company needs kill their R&D and copy this design and be done with it! What is even more interesting to me, in my humble opinion, the EPI 100's sounded better than the larger EPI speakers. The manufacture just hit the sweet spot with these speakers and the rest is history........

Strength:

clarity at all volumes, all types of music/movies

My son inherited two HE19 EPI's from his father, who purchased them in the 1970's or 1980's. He left them with me years ago and I've been spoiled ever since.

The foam is disintegrating and so today I searched the internet to see if it's worth replacing them (with other EPI's) versus having re-foamed as I am spoiled for the rest.

I thank you all for the input I've read, as I now know EPI is "extinct." I, too, just learned that you can refoam and found a place nearby who completely recones for $48/each and refoams/reconditions for $38/each. Hmmmm....not a difficult decision now that I know what I do from you all.

Many, many thanks!

Strength:

Crystal clear highs, natural mids, surprisingly full bass.

Weakness:

Foam surrounds.

It's amazing that a pair of 20+ year-old budget speakers can sound this fantastic. I picked up a pair of these venerable classics at a local thrift store for a whopping $10. The cabinets, grilles, etc. are all in excellent condition, but naturally the foam surrounds on the woofers were completely deteriorated. However, I also happen to have a pair of EPI 202 speakers laying around that I'm not using (not too crazy about the design). The reason I originally bought those was because all four woofers have butyl rubber surrounds in perfect condition! My EPI 100W's now have these excellent original woofers in them, and I couldn't be happier with the overall sound.

The concave dome tweeter is one of the best-sounding drivers I have ever heard. They were also used in Genesis speakers of that era (I have a pair of Genesis I+ that also sound great). The pair I have are late-70's vintage with the "updated" tweeter, which in my opinion sounds better than the original ones, like the ones in my 202's.

The amount of bass that these relatively small (less than 2' with 8" woofers) speakers produce is nothing short of amazing. Unless you listen to pipe organ music or a lot of very intense rap or techno, I see no real need for a subwoofer in a smaller room.

Bottom line: If you see a pair of these for a reasonable price and don't mind refoaming the woofers if need be, don't hesitate to buy them! EPI sold thousands of them back in the day, so it is not at all unusual to find them at thrift stores, rummage sales, etc. At their original retail price, these were giant killers. At their current average price, they are an absolutely unbeatable value.
