Strength:
Once properly placed, they seem close to perfection for me. Dipole bass avoids much of the room mode issies which most of the box designs have, so bass is more articulated, never boomy, and it can be adjusted by placement (it changes with the toe-in angle, as it is not omnidirecrional bass but dipole). Tweeter and midrange arrangement minimalises first floor reflections, that cleans up the sound noticeably; their cardioid dispersion allows for placement near to the back wall. In a word, Gradient’s ideas work, in real-life rooms they sound very well, with only few and manageable compromises. I personally like their design. They are not small, yet they are not voluminous, either. They do not try to hide and disappear, with this design they could not (and should not, if you ask me). They work very well with Parasound HCA 2200 ii and Mark Levinson 27. Weakness:
The bass is not as loud as you may expect from a 12” driver [if it were in a closed or bassreflex box], nor are they suitable for so large rooms as box designs with the same driver size. In that sense, the driver size may be misleading. Their positioning in a room is a process of trial and error, it requires some patience, but if you read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions (which are concise), it is doable. Sweet spot is relatively pronounced (only if compared to omnidirectional speakers). Design is modern and draws attention, they may clash with other styles. I tried them with 300B SET, sensitivity is too low for that, I suggest 100W per channel. Price Paid: 5000 €
