Owned these for around 10-15 years, I've lost rack of time. Did not fully appreciate their virtue, until some audiophiles dropped by and their jaws literally dropped. From then, I followed the last sentence of this review. Male vocals--especially--and female vocals are by far the best I have heard. While quite efficient, they open up and begin to pack a punch at ~12W/ch +--talking tube amp of course. They do sound excellent with HQ SS amps as well. I now have them set up with a Fostex T-90 super tweeter, using the internal X-over. I bought them used, and while the aesthetics of construction are imperfect, the builder used multi-ply birch and followed instructions precisely. He built them like a tank. The sound in comparison to Merlin VSM-M is like night and day--so, so different. Yet, whoever hears them both in my home is stuck when asked: which you you pick. That's saying something from a build that cost $600 MSRP for the parts ($250 if individually sourced) and whatever for the wood. They survived shipment from FL to PA via FedEx nicely--and back then, shipping was reasonably priced. I have them in a large finished basement (~6K cu. ft), 4 ft off front wall and right side and open to left and rear. 8' acoustic tile cieling with insulation over and behind walls. Their bass is not bad--but I have them high passed at 50 Hz (or full-range) and blend in a SVS PB-13 Ultra. I have the T-90 super-tweeter on stands close to inner sides of speakers and offset from front baffle for time alignment. I also have mint walnut V1 Cornwalls with ALK Universal X-over, and it's hard for me to say which I would keep if I could only keep one. Between Merlin VSM and Hammer S-12, I'd have to stick with Merlin for looks and clarity of imaging, but they sound nowhere near as 'robust' as the S-12--esp not with vocals. The sound stage of the S-12 is extremely wide--beyond speaker boundaries and with excellent depth, perhaps the best I have heard. I attribute this large the the Heaths. Too bad the inventor in NM passed away. His widow is a sweetheart, I spoke with her by phone in 2017, I think to source the original tweeter. I've optimized their sound vis a vis placement and matched with highly customized (Abraxas Audio) Heath W-5Ms exquisitely modified to take TS-6AR6/Bendix-6384, EF86 ('60 TFKN) and 6CG7 ('57 Sylvania), which synergizes wonderfully to the S-12. Rectifiers are WW2 RCA 5R4GY or potato masher version. SUMMARY: To groove on the Hammer S-12, one must Weakness:
Huge and Pug Ugly (raw birch), not suitable if married. Limited (but tuneful and tight) bass. HF are a tad dull with original tweeters. Purchased: Used

Sold only as a kit but much refinement went into this product. I built mine with Baltic Birch plywood. Used extensive hardwood bracing inside the box. Used asphalt sheets on the rear wall and Deflex pads behind the speaker and on the back of the speaker magnet. I also used poster putty molded onto the speaker basket and pressed into the corners of the cabinet. The results were better than I expected. I put a bunch of extra work into this project but, you only get to build them once so go all out and reach for perfection. I like how the crossover frequency is at 10 KHz so it gets the phase shift out of the way of the more important frequencies. I love the musical presentation and the efficiency of 96 db is great for many amplifier options. I couldn't be happier with them. It's nice to come away from a hifi show happy that my speakers are better than most of what the shows have offered. I wish they were still offered. Somebody else should step in and take over since the developer has sadly passed away. He was a success in his efforts. |

Strength:
easy load to drive (efficiency and impedance), goes deep, high with little strain
Weakness:
midrange dispersion is bit limited Looking for some higher-efficiency full-range stuff to help me get into the lower-powered SE amps, I took a chance on the Super-12 speakers (97dB, 8 ohms, Hammer Dynamics, www.hammerdynamics.com). |

See review Hi there. I am posting this review to The Full Range Driver Forum, and AudioReview.com. I now have the Bottlehead Paraglow 2A3 amps and the Hammer Dynamic Super 12 speaker systems. I have in the past used a "huge" 15w push/pull triode amp, run into the Aria5/Raven1 speakers I bought from Zalytron. Also, I ran these triode amps into the Super 12 speakers. Other amps in the past have been Perreaux 3150, Krell KSA100MKll, B&K ST202, and Hafler. The Paraglows are stock except for the shielded solid core silver wire, a snubber, and some chassis dampening. I am use to a fairly dynamic, bright intense sound, so I was please when I heard the relaxed laid back presentation of the Paraglow/S12's. I mention both of these together, because the sound is influenced alot by each other. The Paraglows are relaxed, with very fast sound, and great midrange. The treble is very extended and airy. The overall quality of the sound is neutral, with good dynamics for a 2.4w amp. Similar Products Used: See Review |

Strength:
scale, sensitivity, coherence
Weakness:
presence felt only at sweep spot, wispy highs The best value high end speaker that one could ever use. Currently these replace another much loved (by me) speaker - mainly due that these are more efficient and I am hooked. Similar Products Used: no other full range used |

midrange clarity,lower midrange fullness,efficiency,cost

none owning a high end shop has afforded me an opportunity to listen to a wide range of speakers. Let me say that these speakers sound like live music. Forget the audiophile buzzwords like imaging, soundstaging, etc. These things sound like real music in front of you. They are coherant like electrostatics, but with microdynamics that will have you reaching for the repeat button. The midrange resolution is truly stunning. At $575.00 John is giving them away. The support from the designer is also without peer.If you don't mind building your own speaker, you'd have to be crazy not to try these! Similar Products Used: too numerous to list |

Wonderfully musical

Long break in I've fallen in love with the musicality of full range drivers lately. The first time that I saw the design philosophy behind John Wycoff's Super 12 Driver I thought, "This could be something special".... I believe that was right .. In spades...This system has an uncanny ability to make a wide range of music sound wonderful. |
