The JBL CF-120 is a very good 3-way speaker! The vocals are clear and crisp, the midrange response is excellent and the low end bass is there most of the time. The cabinet design is attractive and does not make any noise. I have them hooked up to a sony CE-515 (100x3, 50x2) with 12 gauge wire and I have never heard them distort or fluff. My only complaint with them is that they don't seem to have the absolute best response to low end bass. I am not sure if it is due to my mid-quality amplifier or lack of an equalizer or preamp. I am also skeptical of the cabinet's ported design and feel that these speakers would benifit from a sealed design and a higher quality amplifier. Overall, no complaints with them. |

I recently purchased a pair of these speakers through a mail order discounting service (Heartland) at a price substantially lower than retail. They are connected to a Carver HTR-880 Cinema/Receiver. Signal sources are local TV broadcast (ugh!), local and long distance AM/FM and digital satellite receiver. They are located in my living room which has a hardwood floor with some rugs, sheetrocked walls and a cathedral ceiling. I have found that the sound reproduction of these speakers is excellent for the acoustics of this room. The tweeters are located at a height that is perfect for a sitting listener and they have a wide disbursement angle. I find that the bass response is certainly adequate for the listening area and works well with the Carver. When I consider what I paid for these speakers along with the satisfying performance, I am certainly pleased with these speakers. |

These speakers rock. I have had mine for two years and would recommend them to anyone looking for a quailty speaker. The sound, bass, midrange, and treble, produced by these speakers is very well balanced. In other words, you don't notice one of the three dominating any of the others. They pretty much get as loud and you wanna and nothing seems to phase them. A can't go wrong purchase, especially for around $500 which is what I paid for mine. The only drawback to these speakers is their size which is at odds with my wife. But what they hey, can't have everything now can we? |

I think the JBL CF-120 is a great. I have the Flix1 package with it, however I'd like to upgrade. The Flix1 package just doesn't cut it. Any suggestions on any speakers to go with the 120's for a complete system. |

Strength:
Overall a well rounded speaker
Weakness:
Very bulky Not a bad speaker for the price. They do weigh quite a bit, and the cabinet is large. But I run be the creed: there is no replacement for displacement. Sometimes the highs are a little unrefined. The bass is strong and apparent but not overwhelming. Midrange is fantastic. The sound stage isn't as apparent as other speakers, but depth is okay. Imaging is also a little weak. These are a good all-around speaker and have performed well for H/T applications for me as well as a primary listening speaker for music. Vocals are reproduced with acuracy. Sometimes the sound is a little muddy with certain music but overall a good speaker at a good price. The JBL CF-120 is an outstanding home monitor speaker for the money. While others in the fabled "high end" of audio may sound quite better, for around $500.00 a pair, the value in these loudspeakers cannot be beat. Low end response is tight, although the performance dives below 50hz, making these speakers very 'punchy' with a single 12" driver, but lacking in the extreme low end information found on most Dolby/THX movie soundtracks today. A good subwoofer would be recommended. Midrange is excellent, if not overpowering, with a very linear curve going straight into the treble range. They lack some of the midrange definition that higher end speakers provide, but again, the VALUE is excellent. Treble is tightly defined, with a definite "sweet spot" utilizing a 3/4 inch titanium dome tweeter, making placement somewhat hairy in smaller rooms. Nonetheless, in combination with my Carver TFM35x pwr amp and Adcom GTP350 pre-amplifier, they are an excellent value for $500 a pair. Just watch out for the neighbors! |
