Strength:

Longevity, full sound at low volumes, repair components availability

Bought these in 83, repaired both tweeters and just refoamed the woofers. Play these really load, and at times really low and through the full range the reproduction is full and clear. I thought about getting new speaker and sampled many brands and really could find nothing close. After the refoaming of the woofer, the base got a little boomy, but was easily offset with an equalizer adjustment. The redomeing of the tweeters were $100 each and the refoaming kit $25 dollars from Newfoam (NEWFOAM@newfoam.com a really bunch of nice guys that were good to deal with). So for almost 20 years of daily listening these have been quite a bargin. The new JBL's I listened to were disappointing.

Strength:

Excellent bass response, good, clean highs, and well reproduced mids.

Weakness:

Besides weight, absolutely NONE!

Well, I must admit, I only have one RIGHT NOW, but believe me, after hearing just the one, I WILL get the other speaker, no doubt. This friend of mine got both the speakers from a friend of his' dad. But it turns out, my friend's friend wanted just one of them back. (He's a little foolish.) So I traded the dude a 486 computer for the one he had, and I didn't think I was going to get the performance out of this thing that I did. Foot in my mouth. Now I am going to HAVE to find a way to get that other speaker. I had to refoam this one, but it was well worth the measily $2 for glue and foam surround that I put into it. What can I say, JBL blew my mind once more...

foam thing foams are on there way aluminum die basket 10 1/4 pound magnet acoustic coating on a ribed cone spiders in excilent condition cross overs no sign of fatiging -no burn browning these speaks were doing closet time the foam just melted UNBELIVEABLE. AWSOME SPEAKS!A little note that when in the past I sold my other set of JBLS IVE always missed something from the sound its great to have it back!

Strength:

Imaging,voices,balanced presentation,large soundstage

Weakness:

only accept pin connections

I entered the world of high end audio about 3 years ago. During that time, I have found some great products and some less than great products, all the while throwing a lot a money partially down the drain.

I have to tell you, the one component I'm glad I never replaced was my JBL L112's. This is JBL's flagship classic large 3 way bookshelf speaker produced in the early 80's. I have auditioned bookshelf speakers from Soliloquy, B&W, Monitor Audio, Pro-ac and must say while all are high quality, non produce a soundstage even close to the size of the JBL's. I've tried floorstanders and while the soundstage got much bigger, I lost some of the pinpoint imaging that the JBL's provide, plus placement is more difficult. The sound is crisp, detailed and very musical.
A BIG side benefit is that they only need to be about 1 foot off the wall to produce a large, deep soundstage.

If you see a pair of these boys on E bay, I recommend them highly. Don't compare them with the crap that JBL puts out these days. Completely different animal. They are wonderful speakers and the prices they are commanding for 15-20 years old on E-bay prove it. Just so you don't think I'm nuts, my other equipment is a Classe CD player, AES-3 tube preamp, Marsh A-200 Amp and upper end Audioquest cables. The JBL's truthfully reproduce whatever electronics you feed it.

Strength:

Crisp, Clean, Tight Bass, Needs Lots Of Clean Power To Drive Them!!

Weakness:

There Vintage JBL's Weakness Does Not Exist!!

Superior construction weighing in at aprox 54 lbs each, (they dont make them like this anymore!)My Bryston 4B amp drives these power hungry baby's to their limits producing incredible highs and mids the bass is tight and powerful.I see a previous post stating they are not efficient? JBL rates them for amps between 10 and 300 watts & my 40 watt Nad amp made the woofers dance and they sounded great but the Bryston takes you to the netherworld surrounded by quality sound. From a design standpoint: the tweeters are modle 044 alum vapor deposited 1" dome tweeters, Mids are modle LE5-12 5" Cone Mid, The woofers are modle 128h with a massive 10 1/2 pound magnetic assemble. What can I say 5 STAR Quality!!

Bought my pair way back in '83 in Stuttgart, GE. They still hold their ownafter all these years of moving all around the world! They're all original
and in very good condition...the only thing I had to do was replace the foam
surrounds on the 12" woofers.

Even though they're not that efficient (89dB), they can handle up to 300 watts
of power, and they can fill a good size room with sound! They may not be as
accurate or detailed as Klipsch or Magnepan, but they get the job done. Overall,
a very good performer that can handle what you put into it!
