I bought a pair of JBL LX44 speakers from a friend 3 years ago. The woofers were shot and needed to be replaced but the midrange and titanium tweeter were like new. I only paid $40.00 for them, and was going to pay about $200.00 to fix the woofers. One day I looked across the street at the neighbors house and there was a set of old Bose 201 speakers in the trash. The speaker cabinets were shot but all the speakers were in great shape,so I took the 201 woofers out and installed them in the JBL LX44's They were about 1/8th of an inch to small but I was able to screw them in good. To my suprise they sounded great, alot better than I thought. The only problem is rescently the left woofer crackles a bit when the volume is real high, but at normal volume they sound like new. It's a JBL-Bose combo. It has a great but unique suond to it. For $40.00 you can't beat it.

Judging on looks alone these speakers scream style as much as they do sound. The cabinets are heavy and built well with rear bass ports; mine are in black ash with gray grills. Their crossovers are more then impressive and again well built. Sound is excellent with very excellent bass response.
I have played around with these all day from my Pioneer Elite stereo receiver to my Sony ES theater receiver. I've had them along side a pair of Cerwin Vega LS-12's and along side a pair of JBL LX-60's I also have recently required. Makes a big competitor next to my Cerwin Vega speakers and that's saying a lot, because I love those things.
Would have like to seen them built taller like the LX-60 cabinets and with the LX-60 binding post wire terminals rather then the spring loaded that are featured on the LX-55. They seem to need some speaker stands that can help them direct off the floor, but that aside they live up to the JBL reputation. They have also achieved a high mark from this audio-fiend.

These are very good speakers and if you buy them you don't regret. It is shame that they don't make the speakers this good and solid these days. I have used these speakers with my NAD system and the sound the amazing.
Deep bass, clear highs and mids. I think overall these speakers are very good and produce natural bass without a sub with a balanced sound stage. Though these are 200W RMS, can be driven with 50W amplifier very nicely as the the sensitivity is very high (92db).

I have had the JBL LX55 for about 17 years now (@2009), and one of the set is deteriorating now.
I am sure that the second one will follow soon...
The rubber gasket around the woofer is dried up and litterally falling apart, leaving the cone unsupported.
This results in screaking grinding sounds at moderate volumes, which CAN destroy the Amplifier.
(Voice coil rubbing against the metal pole-plate of the Magnet, which couses brief shorts when the insulating lackor layer is shaved off by this!)
I have run various Disco's and parties with them from 1992 till about Yesterday on an ILP HY244 (80/120 Watts) (2 seperate Modules) Amplifier, which is even one year older, and still standing strong.
But for now, the speakers are in "Background Music" Mode untill I have replaced or repaired them.

As for the qualety, It is really strong stuff!
Mobile use, even at high volumes don't care the speakers at all, since they do not even crumble.
often moved from room to room when setting up a party or disco is even no problem for these heavy speakers.
My music range varies from New age to Rock, pop, synthesyzer and Synfonic rock.

But, even for those good speakers, there is eventually an end of usefull life... :-(

As told, It is qualety material, with exeptional good bass, Good Midrange (AFTER the R12 Disconnection in the Crossover Filter) and for my taste just a little too much high.
An 8 Ohm 5 Watt Metal-Film resistor in series with the tweeter makes them a real jewel to listen to.

Off record:
I can provide pictures for the LX55 since I still have them standing in service.

Strength:

Really high SPLs and deep bass, very high dynamics.

Weakness:

Medium range quite weak affect also precision in the bass range. Problem can be partially solved by removing a resistor from the crossover filter ;-).

Very 'strong' loudspeaker, but if you like classical music, forget it! You cannot ask so high SPLs and precision to a product of this price. The filter modification brings this loudspeaker to be one of the best buys in this price range.
The bass is very deep, but sometimes the male voices are dirtied because of the too high crossover frequency for the woofer and the weakness of midrange.
If you own this speaker try to disconnect the only 12 Ohm resistor in the midrange crossover network, you will never reconnect it again!...

JBL LX 55Three way speaker-26h x 13-1/2w x 11-3/4d, weight 62lbs. per speaker. 10" high polymer laminate woofer, 5" high polymer laminate midrange, 1" pure titanium with lens
diffraction on tweeter. Low diffraction design with rounded
front vertical edges and neoprene front panel surrounding
the drivers. Frequency response 40 hz to 20 khz, sensitivity
92 db 1 watt/1 meter, 8 ohm nominal impedance,crossover frequency for drivers 800 hz/ 4khz, recommended amplifer
power 10 to 200 watts. I love these speakers, good solid bass response from a large bookshelf speaker, rich warm midrange with a total lack of mid-bass boominess and a clean airy treble with great clarity and transparency. The
imaging on these speakers is superb, the neoprene front panel supposedly acts as a sound absoptive material engineered to absorb diffraction sound waves emanating from the transducers. I don't know if this a gimmick or actually
works but I have seen other speaker manufactuers,Acoustic Research and Avid use this technique back in the late 70's
and early 80's.This is a speaker from the early 90's, I don"t think the current crop of JBL speakers are using the
quality of drivers and crossover networks as these speakers
and aren't near as good. These speakers weigh 62 lbs. a
speaker, this equates into large heavy magnets used on the
drivers ie. higher quality. My musical tastes are varied, I
like jazz,classic rock & heavy metal from the 70's & 80's,
hardcore honkytonk country not alot of the current paint
by numbers fluff pretending to be country coming out of
Nashville now, and I love the blues. I am listening to
Jimmy Vaughan as I type, for those of you who don't know, he is
Stevie Ray Vaughan's older brother, an excellent guitarist
in his own right. Stevie Ray learned to play guitar by sneaking out his brother's guitar while his bother was out
of the house until he got a guitar of his own.I don't purport to be an golden eared audiophile, but in my humble
opinion these speakers rate 5 speakers, they aren't perfect but have an all around vesatility to handle varied types of
music and sound good. Stereo equipment tastes especially
speakers is a subjective opinion, people have varied likes
and dislikes in what they are seeking from a speaker.Kind of the same reason some guitarist prefer Fender Strats, some prefer Fender Teles while others prefer Gibson or
Epiphone,Gretsch, Paul Reed Smith,G&L,Jackson,Parker,
Martin,Washburn,Ovation,Takamine,Godin etc. Same thing
with guitar amps Fender,Marshall,Kustom, etc. tube or
solid state. It's only natural for the owner of what ever
brand you happen to own, will think there's is the best.
Different brands of speakers have differing sounds due to
design principles ie. acoustic suspension, bass reflex,
folded horn,transmission line,bipolar,dipolar,the types
and quality of drivers and crossover networks used etc.
Listening to music on a stereo system through speakers can
sound damn good, but it's just a replication of the real
thing live musc. There is no perfect speaker out there that
is going to make you believe you're really there, if you
want perfection go out & support the band or musician of
your choice by attending live music. The people who are out
there ripping others and calling people derogatory names
names because they have differing tastes & opinions need to
grow up and get a life, after all it's about the enjoyment
of music, not a competition of my equipment is better than
yours. But opinions are like assholes everyone has one.Buy
what ever brand you like and makes you happy within your
economic means, you don't have to spend mega-bucks to get
good sound.

JBL LX 55 rates five speakers, rantings from a Texan who
adheres to the comon sense school of stereo.

I bought these speakers back in 1988...paid $800 US I think including Norwegian Wood stands. Great JBL sound, heaps of bass and clear sound from the titanium tweeters. I used these for mainly country and rock for about 10 years. Not a refined speaker but great for fast punchy material. Spring clips are a downer as they won't accept thick cable. Sold them to a friend for $350 for use in his surround system.
