These speakers blow me away. My father was the first ones to have these speakers. Even after his torture of his loud playing. I blast these speakers and they rock the house. The quality sound that comes out of these speakers is great for music and movies. I have no problem with them. My father got them like 5 years ago for 250 a peice.

The JBL LX44s are top notch speakers. I have had mine for 8 years and they are solid. Great sound.

These speakers are awseome. They do not make them like they used to. Bang for the buck, it will be difficult to find a better made speaker. It is unfortunate that the new JBL speakers have not really improved on the LX design. I've had mine for about eight years. I originally purchased them just for music listening. With the advent of DVDs and home theater formats, the LX44s have made a graceful transition into my existing set-up. Great buy!

Strength:

Clear uncolored response. Can take quite a bit of power before sounding harsh. Good driver build quality. Nice finish.

Weakness:

Treble can be harsh on poor quality recordings. I guess that's not the speaker's fault. Thin bass w/o subs.

I Bought these speakers in 1989-90. I have yet to replace them because I feel with the added punch of a crossover at 90 hz to 2 15 inch subs ( one per channel ) and each set of speakers having a dedicated amp has brought the fullness , depth and clarity ( again it depends totally on the recording )I have sought after for years. Sure I could buy ribbon speakers and spend a fortune on amps ( I almost did ) to drive them but the difference with what I have set up would not equal the outlay of cash. I use DSP's. The BBE 462 and the Audio Control phase coupled activator. Nad pro monitor series amps and matching pre amp. See corp Turntable ( yes Vinyl still sounds great when coupled with a DBX 3BX dynamic range expander) with a mission graphite tone arm and a ortofon MMG cartridge stylus. Top that off with a H/K MD 720 CD player ( I know, cheap, but sounds great ) A carver M200T ( for the subs ) and TEAC/Tascam DBX cassette deck with cobalt amorophous heads and you have one kick ass set up. Two Class T amps are on the way with more speakers and DTS/Pro logic decoder to turn this into a earth shattering home theatre. Oh yeah a 32 inch Sony WEGA to finish it off:) I forgot to mention the subs are all Miller & Kriesel. (3 of them, 2 15's and 1 12 ) The 12 incher handles the 120 hz to 90 hz frequency in the main left, right's. Talk about smooth transition all the way down to 24 hz. Astounding for DD/DTS/DVD movies. Saving Private Ryan ( in just 2.1 mode ), when the Tiger Tank was approaching the town, the rocks trembled in the movie and so did all the stuff on my coffee table. The subs are all at least 10 feet away from the coffee table.Talk about realism. All this accomplished with only 1400 watts rms ( total ) of amp power ( grin ). I plan on buying more matched digital amps and bridging them for a total of 2000 watts. If you haven't heard digital amps yet, boy are you in for a shock. The sound is phenomenal. Close to Byston 4B ST's for 1/4 the cost.I was going to buy 2 4B ST's but thought better of it once I heard these amps. Besides I can keep adding these in a daisy chain. As many as I need. Five will be perfect for the price of 1 4B ST. Love that Bryston warranty though. 20 years.

It all begins with the main speakers and amps. The LX44's have been a very good companion for 12 years now. They sound as good today as when I bought them. That is all that matters to me. I see no need to replace them at all.I've been sorely tempted at times but the price was staggering to hear a clear difference in sound quality. I should know I'm an acoustical engineer and ex musician. I know good sound when I hear it . B&W 801's are fabulous but at 7.5K a pair ? The other possibility is replacing the drivers in the cabinet with better quality ones. That's dicey but a good idea if you like to get your hands dirty. No need in the case of the LX 44's. Maybe the 8 inch bass driver could be updated to an Audax. I still don't want to mess with that seamless 20 KHZ - 24 hz by doing that so the LX 44's stay stock :)

StudioLabs 2 x 8 inch, 2 x 1.5 inch polymer dome. Polypropolene bass drivers in a time aligned hexagonal tower enclosure. Interesting speakers when mated to a quality sub. I belive in 2.1 systems as a base minimum no matter how good your left right speakers are.

I have owned a pair of LX44 speakers from 8 years or so. The sound quality is excellent. Not as detailed as the NHT 1.5/2.5i line, but more musical, and pleasing to my personal taste in sound.
I'm looking for new speakers so I can set up a seven channel music and home theater, but haven't found anything yet to replace them that has an increase in sound quality commensurate with the outlay in $$$ I'd have to spend.

I'm surprised that the sound quality in speakers hasn't increased nearly as much in the last 8 years as the price.

Strength:

can handle awesome power; at 120-125
decibels, the sound is pure and nearly distortion free, with the above configuration.

Weakness:

high frequencies sound distorted on bad recordings

The most clarity for the price range.
i bought them used but in good condition. When crossed at 150Hz @12-db slope to 2-10" 4-ohm MTX BG104A subwoofers, and fed 120-wpc, it continues to impress a lot of people
and handles DVDs, CDs, Bass CDs,instrumental(wind, synthesized and voice recordings) superbly.
I would like to pruchase another pair.

Strength:

much better than the newer tlx jbl line. nice full-range sound for the price.

Weakness:

have heard speakers with better imagery, but they cost more than the lx44s

I'm looking for another pair, preferably in the walnut (dark brown, fake wood grain) finish. please write me at skoolpsyk@hotmail.com if you know where I might get another set. who knows, maybe I'll give a finder's fee!
