I purchased a JVC RX-884V Dolby digital receiver to go with the pair of JBL tlx171's and the sound for the money is outstanding. The bass was a little boomy. The highs on these speakers are very competitive with speakers costing more, the mid-range is more than adaquate. The key to getting great tight bass and accurate sound out of these speakers was 10 gauge MONSTER cable,it makes all the difference even with a powered sub. For the price of $199 each I would highly recommend them for digital home theater on a budget

I had been torn between the best sounding speakers at Best Buy and some pricier models at Bryn Mawr Audio (local high-end dealer) when I saw the 171 being sold off "open box" for $269 the pair. Turns out, Best Buy is selling off the entire TLX line in order to become exclusive JBL dealer on some higher line starting in May. So you might pick up a pair of very decent speakers (the 181s are too muddy and boomy in my space) for not much moolah. Thanks for the suggestion about Monster cable tightening the bass even more.

I RECENTLY BOUGHT A PAIR OF THESE SPEAKERS AT PRICE CLUB (COSTCO) FOR $99.00 EACH. I COMPARED THEM TO POLK, BOSE, DCM AND INFINITY SPEAKERS; SOME OF WHICH COST SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS MORE. THE END RESULT WAS THAT THESE SPEAKERS HAD BETTER BASS, MIDRANGE AND HIGHS FROM A SPEAKER THAT IN SOME CASES COST CONSIDERABLY LESS THAN THE COMPETITION. I WOULD DEFINATLY RECOMMEND THESE SPEAKERS TO ANYONE THAT WANTS EXCELLENT SOUND FROM A TRADITIONAL SPEAKER. I CURRENTLY OWN A PAIR OF DCM TIME FRAME SPEAKERS THAT COST MORE THAN TWICE WHAT I PAID FOR THE DCM SPEAKERS AND DO NOT SOUND AS GOOD. BECAUSE THESE SPEAKERS SOUND QUALITY AND PRICE, I WILL GIVE THEM A RATING OF 5 STARS.

In Europe, they are called TLX 710, not TLX 171. I got a pair for 285 Euros.
Originally I was looking for a good whole system after living many years with a all-in-one and acceptable Sony LBT-505.

So the first think that all vendors ask is "how much do you want to spend".
They showed me then some B&W P6, B&W CDM7SE, JmLab Cobalt 820, Tannoy Revolution 3... all in a range 1000-1600 Euros.

What a stupid approach!

So I started listening "low end" products and went up until no more worth the money, IMHO. I stopped at these TLX 710. Oh yes, the JmLab Cobalt 820 are far superior, actually far away, but also 5 times the price...

So what are "good" speakers?
Listen at them, see their price, and think what you will do with them (I'm not an audiophile).

If at home you enjoy what you're listening, then you have good speakers.
Otherwise not.
If possible, be blind and choose listening without knowing the brandname neither the price.

One star removed because other speakers sound better;
One star readded for value;
One start removed because highs sounded quite noisy to me, but that's maybe the amplifier.

Strength:

Value!! Clear, full sound.

Weakness:

None for the money, but I've only lived with them for about a day and a half.

While I was Christmas shopping I stumbled on these speakers and managed to snag them for $75 each! At this price I couldn't go wrong. They replaced a pair of Advent Baby II bookshelf speakers so the difference is very notable. Overall they seem to have a full, clear tone. The highs come through pretty clear, the midrange seems quite full, especially compared to other speakers at the store. The bass isn't especially tight, but I guess that can be improved with better speaker cable. Overall, I'm very satisfied.

As you all know, it is very difficult to determine the "value" of a speaker system and the only way I can determine value is by what you get for the amount of money you spend, in other words, "best bang for the buck". I managed to purchase a pair of JBL TLX171 at Best Buy for the unbelievable price of $240.00 (yes, I said a pair). I listened to all the speaker systems that they had on display and they were comparable to speakers twice the price. Now don't get me wrong, there were better speakers (Bose, Cerwin Vega, KLH) and their price reflected it. I found these same speakers at Wards and was almost going to buy them there at a price of $170 a speaker but couldn't believe the savings I was getting at Best Buy. Now for the speaker review, they provide some a**kicking bass as well as able to reproduce the highs effectively. I'm driving them with a Nakamichi AV-500 amp/reciever and the two together are an unbeatable combination for the price I paid. I could have spent twice the amount to get the same quality of speakers, I'm just glad I didn't. At this price, this has got to be the best "bang for the buck" that I have made in audio equipment.
