I replaced AR's in 1998, been hooked on Kef since then. Driving 9.2 and 90's hard with 1st a Rotel amp, then Technics Surround. Very solid, detailed 3D sound filling a large living room. Used mainly for rock, classical, movies like Inception, Transformers. No distortion even at high levels. With the Technics has GREAT low-end as well. Enjoy. |

Strength:
great connectors banana, sound very detailed, easy to drive can't beat the price
Weakness:
none for a under $400 speaker! responding to first review they do have banana plugs. you have to take plug's out of speaker connector's. im the 2nd reviewer..i have had speakers over a year they sound great. i bi wired as i said about a $400 set of speaker they are very hard to beat not perfect but close for the price!! the build is top shelf!! PS had to respond about banana plugs & not being perfect if they were over a $500 or more i would be more critical! Strength:
CABINETS are freakin' gorgeous (which I hear was one of the complaints about older Codas), price, tonal balance
Weakness:
We have no bananas today, Chinese made, another 1/2 octave of bass would be nice Upon opening the box, I was very excited. I bought the maple finish Coda set (pr. 90,pr. 70,and an 80) for $700 delivered from the guy who has been selling them on eBay. They are beautifully finished! I was however disappointed to see that they're not made in England, but rather in China (now it figures how they can be sold so cheaply). I haven't had them long, but I'll share my first impressions as I don't think the first review is balanced (every speaker has weaknesses, especially $300 ones). First BIG disappointment: NO BANANA PLUGS! Beware if you like bananas like I do, you'll be disappointed too. Other than that, the binding posts are solid and ok, but I wonder why the heck KEF saw fit to produce these without bananas??? Anyway, fit and finish are really really nice, the maple has mirror cut veneer that looks great, but the true test of veneer is how long it stays glued down, and I won't know that for years. KEF folks should be satisfied with the sound: it's tonal balance is pretty good so far, but they aren't my old pair of 104/2's. They're also pretty lean on bass for a three way, but again I haven't had them for long and they could probably be set up better than they are. I was shooping for a set of speakers around the price point of the Athena FS-2's and these are MUCH better constructed than those flimsy cabinet speaks and look a hell of a lot better too (i.e. your wife will let you buy them). High frequency can be a bit on the edgy side for me, but they're starting to sound better the more they are played. It's sad to see that there aren't more professional reviews about these speakers (the KEF website only has a Polish review). For the money they're hard to beat, they seem to image well and generally play nicely. Similar Products Used: Martin Logan CLSII, Boston a100, KEF 104/2, Mission 70 mkII, Spica TC50 |
