The Q35 is the best speaker for its price no questions asked.
It is such an all round performer and renders most CD's wonderfully well. The soundstage is unbelievably crisp and defined.

It does what a great speaker should, you forget their presence and just enjoy the music. I've teamed it up with a Marantz 67SE and a Sony DTR925 home theatre receiver and am loving every beat with these. They do home theatre brilliantly aswell especially with the Q95C centre channel speaker.

Music to my ears...

This Kef Q35 is quite good stuff, but it sounds to dark for me. The midband is very good indeed but there is not much treble and bass. The sound sometimes was a bit plastic. when I listen to my system, Marantz PM 66 KI amplifier, Marantz CD 63 KI CD-player and Denon TU 235 Tuner and Van den Hul D102 Mk III and MK VI interconnects, there always were very irritating treble nasties, especially with the tuner. And this is not a fault of the Denon. so I sold the Kef's and bougth me some Mission 774's. The Missions are ten times better than the Kef's.

Strength:

Good Clarity on high notes, especially good for music.

Weakness:

When volume gets too high, the sound goes edginess. Bass is very poor.

I think the Q35 cannot match the Tannoy R2. But Q35 is slightly better off than the AE109, in terms of treble. I would give the Tannoy R2 an overall winner. In terms of looks, sound and budget, R2 has it all. However, if budget is a constraint that the Q35 is an acceptable buy.

Tested side by side with Tannoy R2 and AE109.

I have had the Q35s for 6 months now and enjoy them very much. I checked out other speakers in the $600 to $1200 and i am said to say nothing came close to the Q35s. I would pay twice the price for the kefs and still be happy. my last pair that was worth listening to as much as these were the dalquist DQ 10s.Please note the KEFs sound best with 80 to 125 watts of CLEAN POWER like NAD ADCOM or CARVER!

I have owned my Kef q35's for almost a year now and I feel that dollar for dollar these speakers offer a ton of great features. They have the imaging and large soundstage that twice the money couldn't buy (more than the tannoy m3's or mission 752's) and now have a new maple finish. they are bi-wirable (thought the binding posts could be a little fancier)and i agree with the other reviewer that you have top be careful when screwing in the carpet spikes. There only weakness seems to be a lack in the bottom-end, and even when put close to a wall the sound becomes more muddied rather than boomy. Great for jazz and classical, not for house or rap (get paradigm monitor 5s instead).

A small column speaker with coincident tweeter and woofershould give excellent stereo and neutrality, theory
predects.

Hard to verify with the Q-35: midrance colouration is
so excessive that they are not worth listening to. Sadly,
even like-priced (Euro-)JBLs sound more natural. KEF
really should get their act better together, or they
will suffer from it.

Strength:

Clear midrange, great vocals

Weakness:

bass - more convinced now than ever

I'm moving my KEFs from being my main speakers to my home theater speakers. I agree that the bass is not that strong, and this has never been my concern - listening tastes are based on jazz and other midrange strong music. However recently a good friend spent US 15K on used Krell and Avalon speakers, which really brought out the weakness in the bass

The point was this. I sat him down and played a pure vocals track, with no bass, and he was amazed at how clear and powerful the sound was, it was in his opinion better than his system!!! Which goes to show how you don't have to spend $$$$ for a good system. If you really love midrange, if you listen to jazz, try these speakers, and if you need the bass, buy a subwoofer, or just put them in your home theatre system....they have served me for 2 years now and I still find them a really good listen.

I have owned this speaker for about 9 months and I enjoy them very much. The upper end of their range is excellent, but the bass, while not
overpowering, is sufficient certainly for my classical taste in music.
These speakers are not meant for rap, but will provide quite good
tonal quality for classical and jazz along with enough depth for serious
Beethoven symphonies and yet can capture the nuance and subtleties of
a piano or horn concerto. Two caveats, however: while I have a very
good CD Player (Sony ES Line), my receiver is mass market (although a
good Yamaha unit - RX595 - nothing that can compare with the amp/pre-amp
combinations that were used when I auditioned the speakers), so the
sound quality suffers I would imagine (I'm interested to know other
opinions with respect to this from other KEF Q35 reviewers). The other
caveat is that the speakers need room to breathe - don't place them
to close to each other or too close to the walls. Moving them less than
half a foot made a substantial difference. Of course, if you need a
little more bass, you can move them closer to a wall, but that's the
wrong kind of "boomy" bass, in my opinion.

Overall, 5 Stars - when you take into account what you get for the
price and their versatility. My experience is that few speakers can
compete with this for the price - although the PSB Century 600 is
right there as well. Also keep in mind that speakers have to be
compared with others at the same price level.

Strength:

imaging

Weakness:

thin bass but knew that before buying

Really enjoy the depth of image and how well they dovetail with my sub. Primarily listen to music but the Eagles and Natalie Merchant DVD simply blow me away in 5.1.
My only issue now is what to do with my Rogers LS7 speakers...anybody interested in buying?
