These are enthralling speakers, the dynamic range and bass extension rivals that of even the best transmission line speakers such as the Cambridge Audio R50s. The imagery is on a par with the world-renowned ESL-57s. I have auditioned many sets around this price range and they really wipe the floor with the rest in the way of transparency and accuracy.

I don't agree that the bass is weak. I think overall the sound of the KEF's is somewhat bright. I think they lack a warmth and mellow richness to a certain in the mid range that seems to emphasize both the high and low end. while they are very crisp speakers that provide lots of details, they are probably not the most accurate for sound reproduction.

In search of a pair of speakers to replace my kef RDM2 monitors i've auditioned these speakers at home for a week. In the dealer's shop, where i've listened to these for the first time i was amazed. They've also had the RDM2 's connected to the switchbox. They were driven by a QUAD 777 pre-power combo and a cheap sony cd-player whose model i don't remember. The sound was beyond amazing, with superb definition and distinctive placement of instruments. It clearly excelled the RDM2s in the AB test but when i've set them up at home the picture was totally different. The room was overpowered with bass and imaging was lost,. though i've expected to get a better result as my room was a low-reverberation and and well damped one, meanwhile the dealers room was full of glass stands and had large windows, hence was a reverberant room with plenty of unwanted reflections. The treble from the REF1s was more airy but in the overall my RDM2s sounded more coherent.
Another point was that the build quality was unsatisfying. Though the rosetta burr finish was so beautifully and perfectly crafted, accidentally discovering that the mineral filled baffle, originally manufactured in white was painted gray with an undecent sort of dye, which came off so easily with a fingertip scratch was disappointing. A less obvious but more important fault i've discovered was that the midrange diaphragms were warped during the assembly of the drivers such that they were rubbing against the tweeters as the center of the midrange cones lost matching to that of the tweeters.

I've owned another pair of RDM2s before my present pair. I already had noticed a degradation in build quality when i received the newer pair of RDM's. This time i've noticed a further degradation. I feel KEF 's begun taking it easier and cheaper and they don't deserve the grands they retail for. I'm sure my next speakers won't be KEFs. Yes Uni Q (i wonder what's unique about Uni Q) is a trademark owned by but concentric drivers are not private to KEF. You may enjoy much better quality with the virtues of concentric drivers with other brands, i.e. Thiel .

One last thing; Which speakers claimed to be audiophile grade speakers come in boxes on which the features of the contents and things like "Llow coloration high definition speakers, Real wood veneer" are highlighted and a British flag is painted?? KEFs of course..

KEF's gone cheap...
DONT BELIEVE THE BRIT HYPE...

I did the silliest thing I fell in love with this speaker for it's looks. When I finally saved up enough money I bought the rosetta finish. So beutiful! I thought I was upgrading from my KEF Q50's, but when I hooked them up I was very dissappointed with what I heard. I lost the imageing the Q50's had. I returned them right away. These speakers are terrible!

I have sold KEF for 2 dealers over the last 6 years. To get peak performance out of any of the referance series line of speakers, it is necessary, in my experiance to use at least 150-200 w/ch to drive them. They are 4 ohm, and tend to like amplifiers with a fair bit of peak current output. I have tried them with a B&K EX4420, a parasound HCA1200MkII and HCA 2200MkII, and also a Carver TFM55x. The Parasound and B&K amps worked extremely well, but the carver amp did not seem to have the drive to wake them up. Also, I have heard them at another store with a 100w/ch Macintosh solid state and the sound was not very good. I personally love these speakers. IMHO I believe that these peole may not have systems well suited to the KEFs. Overall.... 4 stars amongst the speakers in this price range and an easy 5 compared to Q50's.

I believe these speakers to be a great product in every sense of the word i.e performance, appearance. value. They are quite competitive with other models in their price range, B&W cdm7's alon's etc.

Strength:

Detail

It's a good pair of speaker. You should spend a lot of money at the power amp. If not, you never can hear what you need. My system can't say very good, but I can hear want I want. I am using audio synthesis PASSION pre amp and DESIRE power amp. It comes out a great sound.

Weakness:

needs very good amplifier

I very much like the sound of Kef, that probably is pure personal taste.

I can understand some of the critics, but as others already said, with good amlifiers you can solve the shortcomings.
I use a Classe Audio CAP 80 amplifier, wich works very well with the Kef's: absolutely no aggressiveness to the sound unless it is needed (and available in the source) so live Jimi Hendrix sounds just perfect.

The price I paid is for a pair of 3 year old occasions.

I use (and like) them with all kinds of music (classic, rock, pop, easy stuff etc.) and with home theatre
