Strength:
Very clear midlevel and high end frequencies. Very well constructed at only $20 a pair.
Weakness:
Thin bass response. I went to Best Buy looking for a decent set of surround speakers. I was amazed at the clarity of the 911B speakers by KLH, though the bass is a bit thin, the midlevel and high end frequencies were quite clear and potent. Though they wouldn't serve well as main speakers, they do quite a good job in a rear channels surround application. Similar Products Used: Advent Calypso, Yamaha NS333 |

Strength:
Good mids and highs. Price
Weakness:
none for this price range. For the cheap price I was expecting a bad speaker. They turned out to be pretty good. I use them for surround sound and they work fine. They are great surrounds for the person on a budget. |

Strength:
-Solid build quality -Classy appearance -Great depth and clarity -Decent sensitivity -Value, value, value
Weakness:
-None. $10 for such a superb speaker is absolutely amazing. No complaints. These speakers are a joy to own and listen to. I don't know how else to say it, these are simply great speakers. Without a doubt, they certainly represent one of the best bookshelf speaker values today. Although I don't fit the criteria of audiophile status, I am still extremely concerned with all things audio. I use these speakers along with a pair of KLH 970A's and a Creative subwoofer for my computer. Even with meager wattage, these speakers still create a rich detailed sound. I would still highly recommend these speakers at $50 each - I cannot fathom passing these up when they are a mere $10 each. For those more concerned with sound quality on a realistic budget, KLH represents an unparalleled value. Don't let the overly negative reviews fool you. No, they don't have a strong low-end, but then again, don't expect any speaker this size to really hammer out the sub-level bass. For the frequency range these speakers should be judged on, they're second to none. Plus, part of their charm comes from knowing how little you spent on such amazing speakers. Weakness:
Not truely mangetically shielded. I did not even connect the speakers to the receiver before I decided to return them. I planned to use them as my interim front speakers for a HT system. However when I opened the speakers and looked at the drivers, I suspected that the magnetc shielding is not enough. There were not metal cups around the magnets. The drivers used a "bucking magnet" to cancel out the magnetic fields. This technique is believed not adquate. I then placed a speaker on top of my computer monitor. The blue title bar turned green immediately. This clearly demostrated that the speaker was not truely magnetically shielded. Had I used it next to my CRT HDTV for a long time, my TV will be ruined. |

Well, I went to Best Buy to audition the JBL N24II's to use as surround speakers and I stumbled upon a pair or KLH L853 3-way 8" bookshelf speakers for $20-marked down from $80-then I noticed the 911B's next to them. So I auditioned these along with two yamaha bookshelves-NS5290 and the NS-6390-and this is what I came up with:I found the JBL's to be rather flat sounding, not to mention I heard a little bit of distortion when I thought I started to enjoy them; the KLH L853 had a bit of bass(not too thin), with a well built cabinet(for the price that is), and they weren't "too" light; I found the 911B's to be heavy(maybe even heavier than the bigger L853's), however the bass was thinner(smaller mid/bass driver compared to the L853); the Yamaha NS-5290 had a thin bass output also and the weight was a lot lighter compared to the 911B's; the NS-6390 was somewhat heavy, had thick bass, but needs to be toed-in PERFECTLY for "good" imaging. I think I can say that the only sound I "liked" was that of the L853's, the 911B's were "ok", but I think I like the sound I got from the 3-way design better than the 911B. |

Strength:
Clarity ,Size and Power Handling and Tight Low End for Size
Weakness:
No Real Weaknesses. Low end is going to be Limited due to Size, and Price Nullifies Weaknesses worth Speaking of. I Wanted to Add some presence to a Smaller 2nd System using Older ADC Hardwood Cabs with 10" Woofers ( 1 Pr.) Couldn't Build these at that Price. Amamzingly Clean for the Price. Handled 60 Watt Per Ch. at 1/2 Volume Amazingly Well Similar Products Used: Altec, JBL, Polk, Optimus, KLH |

Strength:

Weakness:
not true full range Good choice as replacements in a home theater in a box system or bookshelf system. If you can find the ones in the white box they are constructed better and have a true dome tweeter and true crossover system. |

none for this price range, mate it with a decent sub woofer and go i bought a pair of these at best buy on sale for $30 after listening to them in the store. after i got them burned in, i was very pleasantly surprised. i've been a singer musician and music listener for many years and i also enjoy home theater. i went back the next time they were on sale and bought another pair, plus a klh center speaker. i love this setup with my optimus 120 watt sub woofer with a 10" speaker. you can't possibly ask for more in a speaker of this price i had paradigm atoms before and these are comparable. nice treble, high hat's sound great, i find the mid range very nice and flat and very detailed. i hope no one listens to that geoff dude. a true audiophile doesn't have a sony amp lol. i'd buy these again in a heartbeat. Strength:
Price Power handeling 100W Magnetically shielded Plastic woofers (not cardboard) Fairly nice styling.
Weakness:
Honkey midrange sounded unnatural Trebble response lacked depth and crispness. Newer models don't have mounting facilities. For $50 you'd be better off with the Sony SSMB100h bookshelves. As soon as I saw these speakers on sale for only $10 each, I didn't hesitate to take them home to give them a listen. I didn't expect much. I've extensively tried the Sony SSMB-100H bookshelf speakers (which I also reviewed in this website) for comparison. I imediately realized that the $10 KLHs just couldn't hold a candle to the level of performance put out by the Sony pair. In direct comparison, the midrange sounded unnatural and forced, letting out a sort of honkey timbre. Trebble was lacking in presence, but certainly listenable. The KLH speakers also lacked the dinamic punch that the Sonys had. Physically, the speakers' simplicity is quite attractive and unassuming. And I am happy they used plastic woofers instead of cardboard. Sadly, the price compromise called for using foam surrounds for the woofers. I tend to prefer rubber surrounds because they will not deteriorate with time and use. Final verdict: These speakers are a fine solution if you just can't afford anything else. The sound was fine and listenable, but will not do your music full justice. To be completely fair, neither will the Sonys, but the Sonys sounded far better and are only $50 a pair. I'd use the KLHs for perhaps an extension speaker for a small room, or office. Otherwise, they just don't shine. Similar Products Used: Advent, Cambridge Soundworks, JBL, Cerwin Vega, Yamaha, Sony |

Strength:
Great musical reproductions for the price.
Weakness:
None at this price I bought these as a test speaker to see how good a 20 dollar speaker can sound. I can honestly say they sound great for the price. The highs a nice and crisp and the mids are very good. They lack the low bass being only a 5.25 inch woofer however they do not embarass themselves reproducing it. I hooked them up to my system which includes a Kenwood Basic M2 Amp,Basic C1 Preamp,Nad C541i CD Player and a Yamaha Eq. They did a great job of reproducing the music with good accuracy. Anyone who thinks they can find a better speaker this size for under 150 bucks a pair is dreaming. Just my .02 Similar Products Used: Polk RT25 |
