Strength:

Fairly good sound for the price

Weakness:

quite a few

I had a Panasonic HTB that was fairly good; unfortunately the receiver went out and the most Best Buy could do is give me a store credit. These speakers are part of a piece-meal system for me until I purchase my Denon/Def tech combo.

For $40 these are fairly good speakers, especially for people who'd like to build a 5.1 system on a very limited budget. As a couple people noted, they perform ok with a KLH sub. If you have a bit more to spend, I would pass these up in a heartbeat as the sound is just so blah. I've already put more effort into it than it's worth typing this.. ;)

Strength:

Inexpensive. Solid sound.

Weakness:

At this price, none.

First of all, Geoff's review below has to be one of the funniest things I've read in a long time. Can't agree with most of his points, but he had me rolling.

Anyway, these are outstanding inexpensive speakers. I can't believe the sound quality for this price. I'm using them as my surround speakers. My previous speakers apparently sucked worse than I thought because I'm hearing a whole lot of new ambient sound and music that I never noticed before. And they actually have a little bit of thump to them which surprised me. I heartily recommend them for surround speakers or even your mains if you have a subwoofer. KLH hit a home run with these.

Too many to list....

Wow! It's hard to believe that in this day and age of communication and information that is available to the public, that there seem to be more unenlightened and ignorant than ever. I used to work at Best Buy to put myself through school. I used to go into the "speaker theatre" for laughs, still do, particularly when I see some poor soul wheeling their "cart 'o crap" consisting of their Aiwa receiver and KLH speakers.
These have got to be the ugliest, poorest constructed, and poorest sounding speakest I have ever seen. I have demoed countless speaker pairs in my house, hooked up tp my preamp and 5-channel Sony 9000 amplifier and these speakers are not allowed through my door.
Furthermore, those using the term audiophile and KLH speaker in the same sentence need to gain clarification as to what an audiophile truly is. An audiophile is one who seeks the purest and most realistic sound that is available. Price is not an issue to an audiophile.
On the subject of definitions, KLH may not even qualify as a speaker. Typically, a home speaker is in a wood enclosure, not quarter inch cardboard with a fake wood trim. Take a trip to the type of shop an audiophile may frequent and you'll find yourself in an amazing world of never before seen quality. Imagine the sounds of Nascar through $10,000 worth of speaker, then go listen to your 40 KLH blue light specials.
Finally, let's stopping using the phrase "for the cost, they are great speakers". Forty dollars doesn't get you great speakers, it gets you a box that makes sound. C'mon people.

Price, sound quality,

Weakness:

low end is kinda week but if you are using them for surrounds or have a subwoofer it dont matter.

I bought these speakers to use as surround sound speakers. They are great for what i use them for. i hooked them up to my front main outputs just to see how they sounded. the mids and highs are very nice sounding and clear even at fairly high volumes. If you have a subwoofer in your room you could use these speakers anywhere, but if you dont i would not use them for front speakers. I even hooked them up to my center channel and again they sounded great. but for now i have them in the rear and they are wonderful.

Strength:

price, mid&high frequencies

Weakness:

low frequencies

GREAT speakers for the price. Can't be beat. They have good mid range and highs, but they do lack some in the lower frequencies. Then again their frequency response only goes down to 80 hz and it's only a 5 1/4 inch woofer so what do you expect? And for the moron below that says these don't have any lows or highs, well he is completely wrong. The only reason why these bookself speakers sound like that is because they are hooked up to the rear channels which send out only a mid range and some treble frequencies. Hook them up to your front channel outputs to have the bass and treble response to show up.

Strength:

Awesome price, great deal for the price, a real bargain.

Weakness:

Typical "Made in China" mass produced quality.

For the price, they can't be beat. Okay bass considering their small size, but you wouldn't want to use them as main speakers. Highs are relatively clear, much better than I expected out of $15/pair speakers. For the price, they're an excellent buy. The laminate finish is fairly durable. The speakers are excellent as my rear surrounds. They can even be hung on the wall. Much better than the KLH 970's I used to use as rear surround speakers. They sound better than the speakers that come with <$500 minisystems, so they may make a pretty good bookshelf speaker. The appearance is pretty good, understated. They look like they cost more than they did. I personally would not have paid full price for them, but sometimes they go on sale for $30/pair which is probably worth the money, and for $15/pair, DEFINITELY.

Strength:

Incredibly cheap when BB puts them on sale for $15.00 a pair! Very flat, non-coloring sound.

Weakness:

C'mon, they are cheapy little KLH speakers.

Just wanted to echo some of the other review's. Very good discount studio monitor style speaker. The flat sound they produce is surprsingly good. Give 'em a good poly fill stuffing to beef up the sound even more if you like. I would say they are a little hidden gem amongst KLH's generally atrocious small cheapy speaker line of products. I ended up tearing out and cannibalizing the crossover and tweeter to mate with Bose 141'1 mounted into a cheapy JBL surround cube case. My new "Borg" surround speakers now sound !@#$%@ excellent! So what the heck, at the price: good as is, good as spare parts. How can you lose?

Strength:

inexpensive

Weakness:

no highs, no lows, just mids.

Ok, plain and simple, these speakers suck. The only thing that they have going for them is that they provide sound, and only cost about $35/pair. I have a 4 speaker setup with some old crappy 2-way KLH bookshelves with 8" woofer, and the KLH 911B for rear. I use an onkyo TS-DX484, and use it in 5 channel stereo mode. All these speakers do is provide midrange, and not that great. There are no highs, no lows. The old KLH bookshelves they are paired up with are vastly better. Most people purchase this speaker because they need an inexpensive speaker. I'm not going to go on like a prior review and say an audiophile is one who seeks the sound in its purest form irregardless of cost. That is ridiculous. There are obviously a lot better speakers out there, but if your looking for the best bang for your buck, THESE ARE NOT IT. If you are not looking to spend a good sum of money on a decent speaker, for within the same price range, pick up the Sony bookshelf speakers for $50/pair (Model SSMB105). They do a tremendously better job than the KLH 911B. Just go to best buy and do a side by side comparison, and you should easily be able to tell the difference.

Weakness:

Bass is weak

GREAT speakers for the price. I was looking for cheap surround speakers to go with My JVC receiver.I compared Sony MB105($50/Pair) and these 911B($30) at besy buy.Though Sony has good bass for the size,911B's sounded tight and mids are better than sony's, and ofcourse cheap too.

The speakers on the display and the one I got were different, those on display had rear bassport(model is same 911B, I guess this is newer model), but not mine.I though bass would be even less. But to my surprise it sounded better than those store display when I tested these as front speakers, though it was coupled with Sony Sub.

One should not compare these little speakers with expensive speakers anything above $100.These are worth money.
