I bought a pair of KLH 4 way 300 watt speakers at a yard sale for $30 but the model number is KLH 1590. The sticker on the rear says use 5 to 300 watt amp, frequency response 25 hz to 20,000 hz and 8 ohm impedance. I measured them to be 33" high, 19.3" wide and 12.5" deep with a giant 15" woofer, a mid range, plus tweeter and super tweeter. Dual front firing bass reflex ports allow them to go low yet the bass is not overpowering. With the mid and two tweets I thought they would be on the bright side but they're not, I found the sound to be nicely balanced. I removed the woofer on one to check out the crossover and it was some very simple in-line resistors. The speakers are powered by a Sony STR-DE 197 125 WPC receiver and get loud without effort. Removable front grills and spring clip connectors in the rear complete the features. Weakness:
They're heavy, use your legs when you lift or get help. Price Paid: $30

This speaker really is a throwback to the design genius of the great Henry Kloss, co-founder of the original KLH Company. It's a solid value if you want an inexpensive speaker which not only has impressive bass, midrange and high end but also sounds natural. If you're into heavy bass you can have it, if you're into well balanced sound, it'll get it.

I have the 915B speakers, which I understand to have the same drivers as the 9154 but a sealed (rather than ported) enclosure. I paid $40/pair used. The 915B speakers have unbelievably good sound, even compared to my well-beloved, 3-way, Design Acoustics PS-10a speakers, which boast 45Hz lows. I usually listen to classical music at realistic volumes (3-15 watts) through a vintage 150-w/ch Kenwood KC-207/KA-207 amplifier. The 15" woofer on the 915B is good down to 20Hz (and probably lower), and it really brings out the low resonances in the tuba and classical guitar that are simply lacking in even a good 10" woofer. My first sound test, listening to Mozart's Magic Flute Overture as rendered by the 5-piece English Brass Ensemble, literally brought tears to my eyes. It was the difference between sitting in the back of the church (which is excellent in itself) versus sitting up front with the musicians. LIttle equalization is needed across all frequencies. I'm delighted with these speakers!

i got this KLH loudspeaker set in 1993 when in 8th grade- i jammed with it over drumset noise for 15 years microphoned into it- disc jockeyed with it- (and got paid for it!!!) and played neil pert drum solos at near max stereo volume... they keep ticking- getting older but still look fine- woofers getting old- i damaged one with a screw driver- or something- but they still pump. 300 watts max 6 ohms 315 model or older version.... rocks!!!!!!! less than $100 at walmart - i think for the two it was 200.

Obviously, the best thing about them is the price. I compared several speaker brands side by side from Sony to Cerwin Vega, and the KLH's produced the best bass and maintained clarity very well. They are well built and really put out the volume with a crisp, clean reproduction. The only way you can begin to get distortion on these puppies is to hook up a 300W Amplifier and crank it. Good job KLH!
Weakness:
A little rattle in one of the speakers due to a loose screw which was easily tightened up. I don't think you can go wrong with these speakers. They are loud, clear, and exceptional performers, especially in comparison to other brands at 3 to 4 times the price. I am convinced that KLH is the unsung hero of speakers. I got these speakers a few months ago for $100 each on sale at Best Buy. I'm using them with a Harman Kardon AVR-5 receiver for mainly music and a bit of home theater, and they sound great! They might not go all the way down to 20Hz as advertised, but they've got really powerful bass and a crisp, clear sound. Even in my subwoofer-less home theater system, they have more than enough bass for my tastes. Mine are sitting on carpet about an inch out from the wall, and they've never rattled at all, even when played as loud as my receiver will go. They might not be as great as some of the really high quality speakers, but for $100 each they're hard to beat. |

I have the 915B. Same drivers as the 9154, except this a 15 inch 4 way sealed black enclosure. I believe the 9154 is bass reflex. I listened to several speakers: Cerwin Vega, JBL, Bose in the $300 to $1000 range and none had the same bass impact as the 915B. If you like rock or rap, or are looking for speaker that thump, without a subwoofer, pick these babies up. I love 'em to death. Similar Products Used: Pioneer 403 15' 4 way |
