Klipsch Heresy Floorstanding Speakers

Klipsch Heresy Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

First introduced in 1957, the Heresy, a three-way design, started out as a compact center Channel speaker to accompany the Klipschorn in three-speaker Stereo arrays. In 1985, Klipsch made some changes and improvements to this model and re-released it as the Heresy II. Today, Klipsch has given the Heresy III a bi-wire network, titanium diaphragm Tweeter and larger magnet assembly. The midrange has moved from a phenolic to a titanium diaphragm. All of these changes result in improved tonal balance and increased output. In fact the Heresy III is two decibels louder (96 to 98dB), improving on its already high sensitivity.

Strength:

efficient , good definition

Weakness:

slight harshness

I found these speakers at a pawn shop and I thought I would
take a chance on their condition. They sound wonderful hooked up to hollow state. I run them with a Dynaco 70 (with Mullard EL 34 tubes (xf2)) and a Thorens 124/II turntable.
The sound is slightly harsher than the Dynaco A-25 speakers but the definition is much better. More alive.
I didn't tell my wife I bought the Heresy's and when she came into the house she could tell the difference from the bottom of the stairs.
Highly recommended as a used speaker.

I bought my heresys in jan 1975. Close to 25 yrs later They still sound as clear as the day I bought them. For years I ran them with an Altec sw 1 subwoofer and I've never heard a better sound. I have since retired them to my bedroom. It was the best money I ever spent on audio equipment.

Strength:

Loud & Efficient, Wide Sound Stage

Weakness:

Boomy unclear mid bass,

Only recently did I replace these speakers in my system with the B&W 602s. I bought these Heresy model 1s in 1981. For the price, they were an incredible buy (I think I paid $660 for an unfinished birch pair). The soundstage is wide, the upper midrange and treble is bright and filled with volume. Bass is good, but suffers from a boomyness at about 140 Hz. The lower midrange "hides" from my ears. I'm not sure if the speaker isn't producing that range efficiently, or if it is being overwhelmed with the reflections of the higher midrange (and hence higher energies).

As I mentioned before, I replaced these speakers recently in my system with a pair of B&W 602s. I really like the 602s highs, midrange imageing, bass (considerable for a small driver), and overall clarity and balance. They showed the Heresy's flaws well: muddy bass, brash upper end, with great holes in the lower midrange. Plus my old drivers were showing a lot of distortion compared to the precise B&Ws.

I still keep the Heresys around. Sometimes I miss the brashness of their sound, and the width of the soundfield. Great speaker for high volume Rock N Roll or Blues. I don't regret owning them.
