Strength:
upper bass slam :), huge soundstage and nice imaging
Weakness:
none really, except a bit difficult to carry down or up flights of stairs:)
Never thought I would be saying this about a speaker that looks like it could pass for a washing machine...and has specs well below todays standards, But I am saying it now... Just purchased a pair mid 80's model Klipsch La Scalas industrial finish black with side carrying handles.

Strength:
Horns, Horns, Horns !! especially the mid and tweeter. The abilility to play at a very low signal out of an amp, (should be clean, and a high quality amp though) 104 decibal sensitivity makes this happen.
Weakness:
Very clean , tight and punchy woofer. If you have a pre-out to a sub, then add one to it ,If not buy a high quality amp with a sub out. Makes all the difference in the world, or add 2 , even more sub action really makes the whole system, then the subs can be paired off with the LaScallas' . I have been an on and off (with a day job) working drummer for more than 27 years, with almost as much sound reinforcement experience. I say this because this is where I first learned of Klipsch 1st generation Horns',Belles', and LaScallas'.speakers back in the early to mid 1980s'. I first heard them checking out a rival sound mans' system, he had 4 LaScallas' up front as mid cabinets with 4 sonic bass bins' (18 inch rear loaded sub cabinets) and JBL tweeter horns.I thought how interesting, after listening to these incredible sounding mid to upper horn driven speakers, I learned that they also had a folded horn woofer. They sounded absolutely fantastic when coupled with a good set of low end cabinets, and didnt really need the JBL's, but all sounded well. I talked to my friend and found out he was running one of crowns 300 watt a side at 8 ohm power amps daisy chaining 1 LaScalla to the next. I let him know his system was great sounding and I had never heard home audio speakers sound so good in a live application. Then in late 1996 I was lucky enough to run accross a man I worked a job with that was getting a divorce and needed to sell these large speakers before she could take them from him. after learning the speakers were LaScallas', I had to look at them. They were in perfect condition , having never left his living room since he bought them in 1990.Dated 9-10-1990. We worked a great deal at $750 for the pair. I have had them ever since , and have had 3 different pro power amps's ,2 crown, and 1 QSC connected to them. As well as 3 different home audio recievers. The crowns' I have now are the XLS 402 and the XLS 802 analog with digital xlr input connections, for my small personal PA-used as a pre-out from a main system. The reciever connected to the Klipschs' now is a Harman Kardon HK3485 120 watt per side (is a 2 channel amp) system with a HSU Research VTF 3 MK-2, 12 inch 350 watt 1600 peak downfiring double port sub-woofer. Coupled with the HSU sub, the Klipschs' sound better than ever, the LaScallas' are very clean on the bottum end and punchy. The fat, skin-rattling lows some people like me like, should be left to an added sub, because the LaScallas' are way too clean, and short on throw. The LaScallas' however have the best sounding mid horn, and high tweeter I've ever heard in a home audio loudspeaker. Again I have owned these speakers for almost 12 years, and I will never have to replace them, they take a beating, both in transporting ,and everday use , as well as being very reliable in any application. I only use them at home now, not wanting to scratch them any more than some of the nicks that I've put on them over the years. Being black, I just color the nicks in with flat paint , and that seems to work. Mr. Paul Klipsch who first designed these speakers in 1963, only 2 years older than me, had a great idea going since he started in the 1940's. Klipsch speaker company has brought back the Heritage line- 2 of which are the Klipsch Horns, approximatly 52 inch's high, and trapazoid shaped to the back alowing them to fit in corners, and the LaScallas' 36 inch's high, 24 inch's deep, and 24 inch's wide, known as the second generation or 2s' . I am glad to see that they are back in production. although the specifications are not quite the same, and the new ones being 50 lbs heavier at 175 lbs. a piece , I like the first generations 3 quarter inch birch plywood, and the 45 hrtz frequency on the K-33 E (folded horn woofer), as apposed to the 51 hrtz rating on the new 2s' also the 2s' are peaking at 400 watts as apposed to 500 for the first gens'. I also own 2 home theatre systems. One with the Harman Kardon AVR-347 7.1 channel, and an older Sony STR-DE-597 6.1channel reciever. All but the 2 tower speakers I use on the B-side of the Sony are HSU Research. The towers are Bic Acoustech HT-75 series with Dr. Hsu on the design team for BIC, at the time I thought Klipsch's reference series , and even their synergy was not quite as good a bang for the buck as HSU, and for Home theatre I still like HSU, but with the return of the best sounding loudspeakers I've heard, and I have had many, from Infinity, JBL's ,boston acoustic, acoustic-research, Kenwoods, Pioneer's,Marantz and yes even Sansui, the latter 3 being in the late 70s' ,when I first learned of audio from my big brother at a very young age. So for anyone who can buy these outright or put them on a plan, I would do it, of course if you can find the first gen, in great shape , get them ,you wont have to replace them. I cant say enough about them, they are simply put AWSESOME!! I hope this helps anyone considering Klipsch LaScallas', or the Klipsch Horns' both new or great shape used. Customer Service I personally have never needed any service for my Klipschs' and dont think I ever will. Of course being as good to them as they are to me helps. Similar Products Used: Klipsch LaScallas' can only be compared to the Klipsch Horns', and the Klipsch Belles', which I understand the Belles' are no longer in production. It would be a good thing if they returned. |

Strength:
Major Tom can DEFINITELY hear grond control.
Weakness:
Put these speakers along the longer wall in your room in the corners and face them in towards the center of the room. That will help extend low frequency response a bit. I have to say, I've been a klipsch fan for quite some time now and when I saw a pair of 75 Scalas on Craigslist I had to jump on them. I thought they sounded like crap when I demo'd them (one woofer inoperable and stacked on top of one another in someones basement) but decided to give them a chance anyways. Boy am I glad I decided to take the chance. MAN these things sound amazing after I found a vintage K-33-E to put in them. I mostly listen to harder rock and classic rock, but I've tried them with everything I can get my hands on them and they are still clear as day. I've run them through a Kenwood HT reciever I bought new in 99, a Crown CE-1000, a pair of Heathkit A-7 monoblocks (6-8 wpc), and an old EL84 PP amp pulled from a voice of music cabinet. I dont know what some of the other reviewers were saying, but all of those components made these thing sing! Efficient isnt even the word to describe them! Strength:
Clean reproduction of sound.
Weakness:
Size and will expose a high distortion amp. Athough large, an extremely good speaker. Use with a Nakamichi 600 series amp (100 watts/channel) with a pre-amp tuner combination. Bought the speakers in 1981 for 1600. About 17 cents a day to listen to outstanding reproduction of the music. Very efficient. Use very little power and they will rock. Recommend no more than a 50 watts/channel amp. Customer Service Never needed any service in 26 years. |

Strength:
Clean, smooth, lifelikesound reproduction
Weakness:
boat anchor, industrial appearance Very efficient speakers like the Klipsch La Scalas can make many amplifiers sound terrible even though they sound fine when they are driving other low- efficiency speakers. There is a very good reason for this-- little appreciated-- the amplifier is operating at a much lower power level.

Real dynamics,true tone,huge sound-stage(with TA-10),great5 mids
Weakness:
none I have to share this with you....I have the speakers converted from the "industrial" model to more home pleasing model. I have used McIntosh amplifiers,SET and class A SS amps. All sounded very nice. The speakers are gem. After all these years spent with super high-end and so many combinations, this is a very musical and simple way of getting the most and be very happy....but you have to get Yamamura cables and Trend TA-10 amplifier. Do not think about this for a minute. The combination is "magical" . The horn s and the latest from the digital world! It took us 40 years to arrive here....Just listen to music! Strength:
The volume just keeps coming. Extremely durable. Did i mention they were loud?
Weakness:
Ping Pong balls keep getting lost in side lower portion. We have to turn the music real loud to get the balls to rattle out. Its a fun time.
The speakers are great. We use them at my fraternity house at the university of Illinois. I don't know exactly how old they are but someone made a great move. They have been heavily abused, but still work fabulously. We are running them with an old Pioneer SX-650 from a garage sale ($10). It puts out 35 watts rms per channel, and that is more than enough. We use them mostly in the cafeteria (80ft x 30ft). The two of them fill the room quite well. Often one is enough to make people complain. For the room we are in, brick floor and cement walls, and the music we play, Mostly compressed crap off an ipod, these are fabulous. We use the old amp because the newer sony surround amp (75 watts rms per channel) sounds terrible above half volume. When we use these outside, music is easily listenable from 3/8 of a mile on the quad. The police and neighbors hate us for having them, we all love them. One just got our of the shop, having its crossover replaced. Sounds great. I'm looking forward to a great summer of listening. A perfect choice for the house, have never failed us during parties. We are debating buying a more powerful amp, but I personally think we should go with a less powerful amp so that no one looses their hearing. The current amp was rigged to cut out at about 50% power so that no one dies. A great setup. I fear the day these speakers stop working.
