The first time I heard these speakers was at a club in Japan. There were two pair in a gymnasium sized room. Not only was it unbelievably loud, but the music was incredibly clean and undistorted. I bought a pair for $1400 a couple months later. They are the best speakers I have ever heard. Not saying there aren't better ones out there, but I've never heard them. About 3 years after my first purchase I got lucky. One of my friends who had purchased a pair was moving to New York. He didn't wan't to pay shipping expenses and his studio apartment he was going to be in didn't have enough room for them. He sold them to me for $500!!!
Now I'm in pure music heaven.

One of the great mystery in the 300B's SE tubes craze ( and rightly so ) is the total silence about one of the few over 100db speakers in the market, the Scala and the big brother Klipschorns. True they are relatively cheap speakers, $ 2'800 the Scala , and they show some approx. 30 years old technology, nothing to write about for the great " Gurus " from such prestigious mags as Stereophile, Absolute Sound etc. Don't ever think pairing any 300B's SE amps with under 98db speakers. ( I tried, its awful ) But behold, the combination produces an acoustical bliss and the most lively sound I have ever heard among the most exotic and expensive systems in 20 years.

Move me to top of the hate list!
I went to p/u a gas grill from a lady who's son had died and she was selling off his things. After buying the grill she asked what that junk was in the back of my truck and I said I was on my way to the dumps. She said she had 2 old wooden box end tables in the house of his and if she gave me 2 bucks would I take them to the dumps with me. I took the $ and took them home with me. Those are the best sounding "wooden boxes" I ever heard-- lol

They are 1982 models and I wonder if the 2x6x12 wood with towel works that good. Did anybody have any luck with that idea?

Strength:

Massive Efficiency, Almost Unlimited Volume, Extreme Bass And Beautiful MidRange And Treble From The Horns

Weakness:

Low Volume Clarity

Over 15 years ago I purchased my La Scala's for moble DJ work. The company I worked for used the Klipsch Pro Series La Scala's with the split bass and horn sections and aluminum road edging and corners. I like the sound and durability so much I purchased my own pair of the standard home models. For almost 7 years these speakers blasted away every weekend at weddings and other events and I always got comments on how loud I good go, and how clean and clear the sound was. When I decided to get out of DJ'ing my La Scala's got a fresh new finish and I remembered the original literature listing all the famous theatres and concert halls that used La Scala's. So for the last 7 -8 years they have been the central part of my home theatre system. At first it was hard to find surround speakers that were as efficient as the La Scala's. The ultimate solution, add more Klipsch. Today a pair of Heresy's provide the surround and it's a match made in heaven when you turn up the volume on the latest DVD

Strength:

Dynamic, efficient, capable of concert level sound

Weakness:

Ears bleeding, frequent vists from the police :)

I have owned a pair of LaScalas for about 18 years. I also owned a pair of Thiel CS3s for 16 years, and now own Paradigm Studio 100's.

First off, let me say that I Iove these speakers, and will never give them up. And if you like to crank music, there is nothing else out there that can touch these things (other than K-Horns, or Belle Klipsches). They can produce live concert sound in a backyard (I am talking 120 dB in the backyard). When cranked, these speakers come alive. And it sounds very much like a live concert (which use horns also–so shouldn't surprise anyone). Build quality is awesome. 18 years, no problems. And these speakers weren't babied. I can't count the number of people through the years who have been literally blown away by these speakers at parties. [Also can't count how many times the cops "visited" my parties :) ]. And, if you want to see a party really start jumping, bring a pair of these bad boys, and light them up. Nothing like concert level sound to get people going nuts. One more note–there is no need to spend a lot of money on a big amp. 100 watts is more than you will ever need.

I would also add, that I have always used an equalizer with these speakers –to both boost the bass, and to tone down some of the mid-range. The biggest weakness in this speaker is lack of deep bass. But to do that (deep bass), at these sound levels is extremely difficult (at more reasonable sound levels a subwoofer will handle it).

Now if you are the type of person who likes to listen to music at "more normal" levels, and wants to hear all the detail in music, at just the right timbre, and with no coloration, then this is not the speaker for you. [I like both–by the way]. LaScalas tend to smear details when compared to great imaging speakers (like a Paradigm or Thiel) and will tend to color the sound. But on the other hand, all those other speakers will sound lifeless (i.e., not dynamic) when compared to the LaScalas. It is all about what you want. And for what they do (dynamic, efficient, concert level sound), these are the best out there.

Incredible!!! No speaker I have heard could actually produce a live concert in your living room. Bought a pair of used Heresies at a $150.00 and was so impressed with them I started scanning classifieds until I ran across the La Scala's. Never really use to listen to my stereo very loud until I got these babies. These speakers have incredible dynamic range and detailed sound. You can hear the breath of the musicians performing. Quite a chilling experience to even listen to.

I have owned a pair of La Scallas since 1978. Some things I have noticed in this time period are the fact that no matter what the reciever, it is hard to listen to any volume setting past the eleven o'clock position. Also noting the fact that try as I may, I have found no comparison. Crisp, Clear, and what a Punch. At $686.00 apiece 20 years ago, what a deal.

I've owned Quads.... (no bass) I've owned maggies... (no dynamics) These are just sheer fun. Sure...I like rock and roll... but also love the classics. Crank em up. A joy.

I purchased a pair of La Scala speakers in 1981, before I could truely appreciategood music. My purchase at that time was geared towards a speaker which would play loud and deliver good sound. Original price was $1400. For many years I enjoyed the sound these speakers produced, but for lack of a good size listening room and horrible associated equipment these speakers could never really reveal their true potential. 17 years later I am finally getting around to the solution of my delema. I have a large listening room, and finally some good components(audio research ls-15, classe 200, mcintosh cd player and some good cables). The speakers are alive, sometimes too alive, I agree with the other reviewers comments about the volume, when cranked too high, somethings wrong, although it might be my ears, then again with the amount of sound these speakers deliver I am probaly going deaf. One thing about the La Scala it will grab you, I dont mean it will just get your attention, it will grab you by the neck so you remain focused. Bright is a term which could be used to describe the highs,
bass tones are solid but not overpowering, a little loose. To sum up my experience I truely appreciate the sound and clarity the La Scala delivers, for the price I paid in 1981 they are a steal by todays standards. I have been looking for another pair of high quality speakers lately, and the problem I am having is that nothing so far really sounds as good for the price. I listened to some Theil 3.7s
sound great but $4700, I dont think so. Dynaudio contour series sound good, but
there again the cost is overwhelming. For right now in just looking, I have a feeling I will be a Klipsch owner for a long time.
for their highs,
