Strength:

Great highs, booming lows!

Weakness:

None

I bought these speakers a couple of months ago. Having owned Bose for a number of years I always thought they were the best, wrong! A friend of mine has owned Klipsch products and swears by them. I always wondered why his system sounded better than mine when we had about the same amount of money invested. So I went out to buy a pair of Klipsch speakers and was told buy the dealer that the SP-1 were a new product from Klipch, I listened to them and loved them.I got the pair for 750$ a great deal. Highley recomended.

Strength:

Good, clean sound; Strong bass; covers all range of sound

Weakness:

None so far

I got these speakers several weeks ago at my local Bryn Mawr Stereo shop. These speakers are great - excellent sound from a unit which uses little floor space. I do not have a seperate subwoofer - with these speakers there is no need. These speakers strike an excellent balance of being able to truly hear the details of insturmets in the orchestra, yet still be able to play a big boom when watching a movie. Excellent!

Strength:

full range. we play all the music channels off digital cable and it handles them all superbly. Tough for the rugrats to knock over.

Weakness:

Wished the grill was like the 3.5's and kept little fingers out.

Oh my GAAAWD.

These speakers are like buttah. At the store I listened to them next to NHT's and there was no comparison. I use them in my living room just for music and the sound is unbelievable. The great part are the built in subwoofers. I have been extremely satisfied so far. Everyone who comes into the house are totally impressed by the sound.

Strength:

The Horn, Klipsch customer service

Weakness:

Bring your own Torx screwdriver

This is a follow up to my review below to describe Klipsch customer service. Of course, the first thing Customer Service does is screen for a purchase from an authorized dealer. But after passing that screen, I was eventually contacted by the Director of Customer Service, who accurately diagnosed the problem from my description, (loose wire between woofer and circuit board), and provided me with detailed instructions for performing the repair myself. The woofer is now working again, and based on this positive experience with Klipsch customer service, I am upgrading my rating to three stars.

Weakness:

the electrics, and the combo speaker/powered sub configuration.

I set up a HT for my parents and used the SP-1's as main speakers. First impressions blew me away. Beautiful sound.
So I ordered a second set for my system. 1 week into use one of the SP-1's subwoofers stopped working. No visible damage, the light switches from red to green when a signal is applied, and the LFE cross-through to the second speaker works, but no joy on the sound. So I will see how Klipsch warranty is honored. But I have to admit a bit of disappointment with the subwoofer of the unit still operating. The output is considerably less than the Yamaha SWT-100 that is the primary bass box. To get the Klipsch up to 72 db requires a +10db adjustment on receiver when calibrating using the test tone, the main and surrounds are running no db adjustment and 75 db output at the same volume level. And with that +10 SW adjustment the Yamaha is shooting its woofers across the room, so I have to scale it back to 25% of output on it's control. ergo I may have a defective amp on the working Klipsch unit also. Summary of problems noted: Even with a two year warranty on the electrics, at 50+ lbs each packed these are not speakers you want to be paying to send in for repairs. The second problem is that if a separate subwoofer stops, you still have the full range of the main speakers; not so with the SP-1s, the crossover cuts off the bass at 125 hz. So you have a 2/3'rds range speaker if the subwoofer is crippled. Finally a complaint about the "new" owners manual. It is one of those "multilingual" jobbers that spend 4 pages to give you one paragraph in 5 languages, and very little info is provided on the SP-1. The old manual (still on the website) is much more useful especially for the SP-1's, download it immediately if you are thinking about buying these units! But I'll have to wave you off. Better to buy a non-powered Klipsch main speaker and save the powered subwoofer for the separate enclosure. But don't just take my word for it, note that the high-end combination units, the Klipsch RP-3 and RP-5, each with powered subwoofers enclosed in the speaker cabinets, were discontinued by Klipsch this year, after less than a two-year production run. You can read all about them in the Klipsch "Classic" section of the website. IMHO they shoulda retired this puppy too.

Strength:

Great sound, bass is good for music (clean and not overpowering)

Weakness:

LED of one of the speakers didn't turn on. Bass is poor for home theatre.

I bought these from a limited selection of speaker that were available to me. They had pretty good reviews so I thought I'd give them a try. One of the LEDs didn't turn on on one of the speakers. Setting it up with my receiver was also complicated. I had to turn the SW channel all the way up and all the other channels all the way down to get any decent bass. The bass however is more than adequate for most types of music. It's clean and blends really well with music. It's not really boomy. However, don't expect much for home theatre. every once in a while you might feel/hear it a little bit but don't buy them expecting to rely on the two 8" subwoofers for your HT bass. (I didn't, I just wanted something temporary since the exchange was out of every subwoofer they had although I thought it would be a little more powerfull). but overall I'm very pleased with these speakers.

Weakness:

Not as much bass as I originally thought.

Ok, this is a follow up to a review I posted when I first bought my SP-1's. Originally I thought these speakers rocked, and they do kick some serious ass when listening to music. But, after a while, when watching action movies I noticed the bass did'nt seem as good as when I first bought them. These SP-1's were an upgrade from my old BOSE AM-7. The SP-1's make a BOSE bass module sound anemic, but two 8" subs just can't cut it when it comes to a bass intensive LFE soundtrack. So, I added a Klipsch KSW-15. When I got it set up, I was hearing bass on some of my favorite movies I did'nt even know was there. Problem solved. I am keeping my five star rating for these speakers just because they sound so fantastic for music. I you love home theater though, and you want tremendus bass out a powered tower, you might want to consider a pair of Klipsch Reference Towers with larger powered subs in them or adding an additional power sub.

Strength:

Bass, Clarity, Price

Weakness:

I'm scared to try and take off the speaker grills for fear of breaking them.

My last system consisted of Bose Accoustamass 7 w/ Model 100 rear surrounds, the SP-1's absolutely blew me away, I could'nt belive that two 8 inch subs can make so much bass. The clarity is unreal, in two channel stereo the sound they produce is amazing. I also bought the matching Center channel(SC-1) and Surround Speakers(SS-1), for the price I paid for all my speakers($1150), I can't imagine having a better sounding home theater.

Strength:

Clarity, overall fullness of sound, remarkable presence in 2 channel stereo, power, attractive design

Weakness:

None that I have discovered so far...

Recently our local high-end stereo provider of choice moved to fantastic new digs, which provided us with a wonderful opportunity to upgrade our home theater set-up at a great price. I had the opportunity to audition these speakers along with others in a similar price/performance range, and it came down to a very close call between these and the B&W's. I decided to go with the Klipsch for the fullness of sound I need in my home theater system, as well as the fact that they have their own powered subwoofers. I will be going back, however, to pick up a pair of the 602's for my office, which is primarily where I listen to good old two channel stereo.

These speakers have yet to be anything but astounding, particularly when paired with DVDs like Fantasia 2000, Natalie Merchant's concert film and Blue Submarine No. 6.

Next month it's bonus time, so we will be upgrading our other speakers to a full complement of Klipsch (SC-1 and SS-1) along with a receiver upgrade to a Pioneer 36-TX and DVD to a Sony DVP-S7700. Wish us luck!
