Strength:

Simply a great all around speaker

Weakness:

Takes a little time to get rid of the boomy bass

Count me in as another believer. I think while placement is important , the speaker in the beginning sounds a little boomy in the bass. After a couple of weeks the woofer loosens up and placement becomes easier. I was a little worried beccause cosmetically, I cannot put them more than 18 inches from the back wall. Happy to report after break in no problem. Also the highs smooth out after a few weeks as well. At this price point I want a speaker that does it all. The Sig delivers. Great bass, superb midrange, nice extended highs, and great looking as well. A wise choice. 5 stars all the way.

Strength:

Huge Sweet Spot, great soundstage; First Class Cabinetry and finish. Best I've ever seen in any speaker.

Weakness:

Cheap plastic and wood screw mounting base. Hey, Bill D., don't you read these reviews?

I agonized for months over this purchase. Whispers would be my hands down choice, but price made my decision easier. Focus made bass management too dificult in my listening space, so the Sigs won out.
I ordered the Sig III's and they were delivered 2 weeks later than promised, an agonizing wait I can assure you! They arrived intact on August 11th and I spent the afternoon unpacking them and setting them up. Let me first say that these speakers are beautiful to look at. The Rosewood premium finish is absolutely gorgeous. SAF is not a consideration for me, but for those of you who have no say in the matter (read whipped :-) , you might just get away with putting these in your living room while preserving marital bliss.
I am driving them with a Sunfire Theater Grand II/Cinema Grand Signature, using the biwire voltage/current source outputs. Right away I was impressed with the rich soundstage delivered by the Sig III's. No Subs are need, but experiment with large and smal configuration, both impressive. Finally I have a set of speakers that allow my amp to flex it's muscle a bit! Initially I was disappointed with the highs compared to my Platinum Trios. However after about 50 hours of break in, the Sig III's have come up into their own. Great for home theater as well as music, little to no compromise that I can perceive. They impress me more each time I listen to them. Perhaps one day I will trade up to Whispers, but I can say that these speakers are the best I have ever owned and I plan to keep them for some time to come.

Weakness:

None

After eighteen months of extended critical listening, I am still completely in love with these speakers. My room does not allow optimal setup, but I have still managed to get a huge soundstage. I can't recount the number of times I have been startled by the "you are there" quality these gems have delivered. The only other speakers that impressed me as much with their transparency have been Apogee Duettas and Martin Logans. That I can compare the Sigs to ribbons and electrostatics should speak for itself.
The differences are in dynamics. Yes, I listen quietly to jazz combos some nights, and the Sigs deliver. But I was lucky enough to see the Who in their heyday. I never thought I could have them appear in my living room until I put "Live at Leeds" through these babys. Symphonic music is extraordinary; the light passages are detailed and the crescendos can be hair-raising. It has been said before - sub woofers are completely unnecessary. And you'll be shocked by the ability to deliver high SPLs when required.
Playing the Signature IIIs for friends, both audiophile and non, is most gratifying. I can spoil my high end friends with one listen; they concur that it is the best "real world" speaker they have ever heard (and some have spent $10K plus). The casual listener is amazed: "Wow, I never heard that before! All the instruments are in their own separate space!". These are the moments every audio nut lives for.
Most importantly, the Signature IIIs are true reference speakers. I can finally pinpoint the effects that my equipment adds to (or subtracts from) my overall sound. I will continue to upgrade my system, but I have no need to look for better speakers. If I had 14 grand I'd audition the Whispers, for 10 grand less these are the finest speakers around.

I got these sound unheard used for $2,000 to replace my focus speakers due to the focus being too big for my 13x15 room. Let me just add my voice to the overwhelming chorus of adulation for these wonderfull speakers. What would youlike to know? I cant think of any area of perfomance in which these are less than superb. They image better than the focus and are startlingly real in their presentation. Don't waste $ on more expensive speakers, these are the holy grail and they look great too. (mine are rosewood) And here's another tip for free I'm using Acoustic Energy Aegis 1 speakers in my dining room and they are giant killers (see the rave reviews) soon to be in the hall of fame. Back to the sigs; I was at the legacy factory drooling over the whispers and a salesperson told me that the focus speakers were to get a new improved crossover soon. I asked if the sigs would be improved and he looked at me incredulously and replied that they would be foolish to modify the sigs because they were so well loved as they are. The sensible sound has been instrumental in alerting the masses to the focus and classic legacy speakers but the sigs are overlooked. Don't you make that mistake. I also noticed that stereophile avoids the legacy speakers like the plague and my personal opinion is that it threatens their relationship with their overpriced advertisers. How else could the largest audiophile publication ignore the finest line of speakers in the world and the best value to boot? I give the sigs 10 stars and 20 stars to the whispers.

I have recently auditioned speakers including Magnepan 1.6, PSB Stratus Goldi, Thiels, Sonus Faber, and the Hale Rev 3. This speaker seems to be the overall best in my opinion. The Hales are nice but seem somewhat sterile, the PSB seem a little crisp in the highs, the Maggies have the best soundstage and transparency, but are a seem a little lacking in dynamics and bass. I think I'm sold unless something better pops up.

I flew down to Dallas to listen to the Legacy line, as they don't have an audition site in Colorado. The bottom line is that I was sold after the first song I listened to, I've ordered a pair for myself.
First of all, I don't consider myself an audiophile. I probably don't listen to music as critically as many of you do, but over the past few weeks I've listened very critically to a number of very good speakers. These include: Martin-Logan Request, Dunlavy SC-III, PSB Goldi, B&W 803, Dynaudio Contour 3.0, Thiel CS3.6, and the Hales Transcendence 5. All of these speakers did some things very well, some did everything pretty well. What sold me on the Sig-IIIs were the incredibly clear midrange and treble (as good as any speaker I've heard and better than most), rock solid, tight, accurate bass, and the overall colorlessness and accuracy of these speakers. These were by far the best speaker I've listened to regardless of price, and they're cheaper than most I've listened to.

Audio is such a subjective thing that I would never claim that these are the best speaker for the money, but they certainly are for me. Given all the hype and positive feedback that Legacy speakers have received, I fully expected to be impressed. What surprised me was how much better they sounded than even my high expectations.

The equipment used during the audition was all Legacy gear. The amp was their 200 Wpc solid-state model. The cables were considerably less than top-end, and the room acoustics were probably not the best (it was a very sparcely furnished room). The first song I listened to was the Rippington's Morocco which contains music covering the entire frequency spectrum. I heard some of their high-frequency percussion I'd never heard before, and the prominent base line was reproduced effortlessly and accurately. I've used this same song on every speaker I've heard, and never heard it sound this good! Next I listened to a Mozart piece which I'd also used on every other speaker. This time I heard an annoying background hiss which I'd never heard before which made the recording fairly unlistenable. I suspect I'll end up tossing a number of my CDs. If a sound is on the source material, this speaker will reproduce it, not always a good thing. Next was Sarah McLachlan's Lost. Absolutely chilling vocals with a very good soudstage and imaging. I then listened to another jazz piece (sorry, don't remember the artist) with a great female vocalist and string bass, both reproduced beautifully. At the end of the song the vocalist was snapping her fingers: amazing! I felt I was sitting right in front of her.

If you're even considering a speaker in this price range or above, do yourself a favor and find a way to hear these. I would have bought the Focus, but they're a little too big for my room. I also listened to the Whisper: it was a truly religious experience, I think I saw God. There simply are no adequate adjectives to describe the sound of these speakers. Absolutely unbelievable soundstage and imaging.

Martin Logan, B&W 800 series

Weakness:

None found todate

Mein speakers are in premium rosewood finish and, musically, I find, nothing comes near these wonderfull main speakers. This review is intended for Italians that live in USA.
Buon divertimento!

Strength:

Very solid, intense slam factor, crisp, dynamic, balance, tonality, imaging

Weakness:

If and when you need to move them, it is best to have a 2nd pair of hands due to their weight. They are too big for the dorm room I currently live in....

I was fortunate to find a pair of Sig III's used in 1991, and have been continually impressed with them ever since. They are built like a tank and weigh a ton. These speakers have great dynamic capability, and they will present a very pinpoint image of the music, but you'll need to be in the "sweet spot". They never fail to deliver even on the most demanding voices or symphonies or rock and roll. Your preferred genre of music won't matter, these speakers will deliver. If you are fortunate enough to find a used pair, I'd snap them up in a heartbeat. Well worth the price, even at full retail. You'd have to pay much more to get this much speaker, and then you'd be hard pressed to get same level of quality, either in build or in sound. By the way, these things come with a standard 10-year warranty. Not many speaker companies are willing to do that! These speakers are good across the entire toanl spectrum, but their bass is exceptional, it is deep, tight, and crisp, without ever being boomy or overwhelming.

Right now, I'm in school (living in a Dorm room), so I had too put my Sig III's in storage for awhile. The one thing I really miss, its my Sig III's. Can't wait to pull them back out again as soon as I graduate.

I was driving these speakers with NAD gear, 1700 preamp, 2600A amp, and 5000 CD player.

i bought a pair of legacy signature III last july, they are black walnut. my room is 20 by 14 and these seem to be
about as large as you can get in this room, they are 33
inches from both front and side walls. with sonic frontier
electronics these speaker are absoultely magnificient, mid
range is superb, highs very extended but sometimes a tad
grainy on some cd sources, but the base is unbelievable,
ti is no only of great quanity but great quality. but the
true measure of a great speaker is its ability to reproduce
the piano. this it does if spades, a truly great speaker
for its size, if i had the room i probably would go with
the whispers
thanks,
