Strength:

Tremendously engaging

Weakness:

Bass, but that's what REL subwoofers are for

I just wanted to add to the reviews previously posted, with which I mostly agree.

I have a home theater system whose speakers are Tukan (L&R), 5120 (center), and Sekrits (rear surround). Originally this system included Rotel pre/pro and amp, then went to Theta CasaNova pre/pro, then bi-amped front speakers using Linn 5105's until the crossover cards finally arrived, and then went active with the Tukans and 5120.

At each step of the way, the Tukans were a tremendous value. Now, fully active, they have ended any thoughts I might ever have had about getting "better" speakers. My dealer swears that there's a person in Arizona who drives active Tukans with Klimax amps (i.e., $40,000 of amplification for $800 speakers); that might be whacked, but I would try it if I could afford it.

These speakers don't have the cachet of many others, but I think people who really listen to them without concern about the "status" factor will realize that they are wonderful.

I also recommend REL subwoofers (esp. the Strata) as being easy to mate with the Tukans. I personally much prefer the electronic crossover in my CasaNova to REL's suggested "melded" speaker output method of connecting. I believe that is because the Tukans can "relax" when they don't have to try (and fail) to generate the bottom octaves.

My next-door neighbor has Linn 5140s (3-way tower), and I much prefer the Tukans, though active 5140's do a fine job on home theater.

Absolutely stunning small speakers that squeeze every drop of emotion out of each note. The soundstage and imaging produced by these is HUGE HUGE HUGE even when compared to larger speakers. The bass is only limited if you are running them in a large room. Linn is developing an economy subwoofer that will provide a good match. Put them against the wall in a medium to small living room area and be astonished. I agree that for the money these are the best value in the Linn line. Don't be taken in by bigger is better because it doesn't hold true with these (even within the Linn line). The Tukans portray music with a punchy rhythmic slam having exceptional air and detail. The only down side I can think of is that bigger speakers look a bit sexier, but for the difference in price and performance compared to most brands...who cares. I prefer to listen to hometheatre in stereo (Bryston/Linn) rather than using surround through an AV amp because the presentation with these speakers is so involving. These are the antithisis of B&W speakers, being much more laid back with a hyperdetailed presentation-especially the upgraded CDM series with the new N series tweeters. The Linns are more forward sounding, yet not too much so to be "in your face", and very engaging.

Happy listening!
