    Strength:

    Soundstaging,transparency,depth,detail

    Weakness:

    Require subwoofer for top performance.

These speakers need the best ancillary equipment to sound their best. Sure you can hook them up to a high powered receiver or mass market amp and still get good results, but when paired with some of the finer high end equipment these speakers rival some of the best at any cost.

They do not need gobs of power as many believe. I have been diving them with my Quicksilver M60 monos (60 watts a channel) for about a year now. They should be run on an amps 4ohm tap for best sonic performance. Add a good subwoofer such as the Vandersteen 2Wq and there wil be enough bass to rattle a room!

Also, although they sounded pretty good out of the box, they sound at their best after about 100 hours on them. I have owned many speakers and have listened to many others (some costing over $70,000). with top notch equipment and cabling these are as musically satisfying as any speaker out there! Here is my associated equipment: Cary SLP 50A pre/amp, Quicksilver M60 mono amps, Vandersteen 2Wq subwoofer, Rega Planet CD as transport, MSB Link DACIII, Theta TLC, Rotel RP 900 t/t, with highly modified Rega RB 250 arm, BP special,Lehman Black Cube, Goertz silver speaker cable and Goertz silver interconnects throughout system. Omega Mikro power cords, Kimber power cords,Omega Mikro digital cable, Grey Power Company power transformer.

    Strength:

Percussions naturelles, voix neutres. Restitue la scene.

    Weakness:

J'utilise 2 amplis Linn LK-100 (50 watts).

    Strength:

Excellent value, accurate and enveloping soundstage.

    Weakness:

Becomes less "coherent" sounding when music becomes more demanding, or complex.

I too was amazed at these speaker's price point. The sound is rich and inviting with a satisfying full feeling. As I mentioned earlier the sound becomes a bit less focused and accurate as you music becomes more demanding, this problem is rectified when you compare them to their family members the 3.6's, but then again these speakers cost twice as much. I do not think you could really go wrong with these speakers, although it is true that they need adequate power, and are difficult to aesthetically integrate into a demanding decor, especially if one is going to use the rear surrounds.

    Strength:

Huge Soundstage, excellent imaging and transparency with
very little to no artificial coloration of sound. Very
natural sounding and plenty of bass once properly broken in.

    Weakness:

Overall size of speakers, setup, positioning. Can easily reveal weaknesses in recordings and upstream equipment.

I started like many others, looking for speakers in a much
lower price range and gradually my speaker budget started
to increase. I was outfitting a dedicated home theatre/music
room with all new equipment and was originally recomended
by a friend to a particular dealer in my area. I started off
listening to Paridigm Monitor Series and was thoroughly unimpressed. Part of the problem was that the demo was done
by some High School age kid who didnt know anything about
the speakers or equipment. I listened to Martin Logans
at the same dealer. I was onto something but was still
disappointed at the upper midrange distortion and the price
was way too high. After further research I decided to purchase a pair of MMG's directly from Magnepan and WOW!
I think they are the best kept 500$ secret. My local
Magnepan dealer had been out of stock for months and they
were accepting Pre-orders with a deposit. I asked that
they call me if they got a pair of 1.6's that I could
listen to. After having my MMG's for two weeks I was suprised to get a phone call from the dealer. They had
the 1.6's. I rushed over the same day and everything
good about the MMG is bigger and better with the 1.6
Even though the price was higher than my original budget
I could not resist. For the first month they were set up
in an unfinished room in my basement. There they sounded
good but were lacking in bass and showed signs of distortion
at higher volumes. I was using cheap speaker wire (18 guage) and had everything in the basement running off of a
single GFI outlet. Once my Home Theater was ready the 1.6's
were moved in with the rest of my equipment. With a wall
behind the speakers I noticed an immediate improvement is
bass response. My electronics are now on a isolated 15 amp
circut and I purchased some 12 guage silver plated speaker
wire and heavy duty gold plated bananna plugs. The improvement was immense and the bass respones is very strong. I have an HSU Research Sub and dont use it for
listening to music. Im still tinkering with positioning in
the new room and in some placements near the back wall the
bass is overwhelming. Also now the speakers show no signs of
distortion at very high volumes although my ears are suffering. I could not be happier with these speakers.
Buy heavy guage, high quality speaker wire and use high
quality electronics, especially a good amp with at least
100 watts per channel and you will not be disappointed.
These speakers are for music lovers!

    Strength:

    None really

    Weakness:

    Bass is muddy.

I too was excited after reading the Stereophile review of these speakers. Stereophile drools over these speakers and the world follows...so I went to have a listen. Wake up and use your ears...these things aren't that great. I compared them to Snells and Energys in the same room, the Snells embarrassed these horrid looking things. Fortunately I went down the street and got nearly Snell quality at 1/2 the price (Def Tech BP30's).

Overall these speakers are merely OK; they are definately not the standard in with their similarly priced competition.
