I just bought a pair of Magnepan MMGs (second hand). As far as sound transparency and price goes.. these speakers beats up those expensive
high-end bipolar speakers. The bass is adequate and tight and NEVER boomy.
Its tweeter is as "sweet" as the Lineaum tweeter. The midrange is realistic
and clean compared to a pair of Mirage 3-way speaker(my friend has,not sure which model)

On the down side, the imaging is rather narrow, I need to "toe-in" to get
the sweetspot.
Moreover, these monsters eat up a lot of power. I'm using a Yamaha RXV-690
80W/ch receiver + an AudioSouce AMP ONE 80W/ch = 160W?? and i still need to
turn the knob 1/3 to fill the entire apartment with music.

So.. i'm giving it a outstanding 4.0 stars.

I'm currently the pleased owner of a pair 2.7's. My dealer advised them to me although I must admit I had an other model in mind. So imagine the shock when he rang at my door with a compleet different set of speakers than I had in mind. But now , half a year later I'm still very pleased. I bought an Bryston 3st amplifier (same story here as with the 2.7's). Only , now I'm looking for an suitable cd player. I'm not to critical about the price , but is it worth it? So a friend came by with an 'cheap' kenwood player. This cost's about 600$ and I could even hear the difference in sound when I used his or mine interlink cable. So for this I can say , way to go Maggies! So now I only need a cd player. It may cost between 2 and 3000$ and my dealer advised and holfi xara dc player of the xaurus. They are suppost to be very good but every 5-10 years you have to replace the battery pack. So if anyone has some good advise...The only negative thing about the Maggies would be the placement. Guess I need a bigger house. I've never heard the 3.5's and maybe as well too. (It took me half a year to decide how to put everything in my livingroom, but now I'm pleased (also still single) with the way it stands). So , ok , there will alway be better , but at what cost? I believe de 2.7's are the best speakers there are for there price.

I agree with most of what Todd Wakefield (from Park City, Utah) saidabout the Maggie 2.7s (thanks to him for the nice review). These
speakers are fabulous. I don't want to lengthen my review by talking
more about the transparency, 3-D sound-stage, imaging, spaciousness
that they create - no words can describe that, you'll have to listen,
and feel for yourself. In fact you will forget about these audiophile
buzz-words when you listen to the Maggies, you will just enjoy the
music and have a good time, and that's what music is all about, right?
You probably can't have this experience with the box speakers.
I feel that the complaint about lack of bass in Maggies isn't justified,
you can't have it all - the name of the game is trade-off in speaker
design. If you want more bass just add a sub-woofer and cross it over
as low as possible (I mean let most of the sound come out of the Maggies.)
The bass that the Maggies provide should be sufficient for most kind
of music excepting may be hard rock or metal.

However, I will have to add here that I found the Martin Logans to be a
better speaker than the Maggies. They possess all the qualities that the
Maggies are famous for, and they just sound more clear and transparent
than the Maggies. I had almost bought the Maggie 2.7, but changed my mind
after an audition of the ML SL3. Things like string instruments and female
vocals just sound better on the Logans than on the Maggies, something that
justifies the extra price of the Logans. I am, by no means, belittling
the Maggies, they are superb speakers and I'll have to give them a 5-star
rating. At $2000 you can't get a more musical speaker than the 2.7, period.

I have now had a set of 3.5Rs for 9 months and am extremely pleased with the imaging and soundstage of this speaker. I have a couple of recommendations for those who may be considering the Maggies.1. If you are trying to decide between the 2.7s and the 3.5s, if you can afford it, go with the 3.5 for the true ribbon tweeter. It can portray a more natural high end but will require some experimentation to prevent it from sounding overly bright.
2. Make sure you have a high current amp because the Maggies are current hungry! Also use a quality speaker cable!
3. Find an electronic supply house that sells 1% 10watt resistors and buy a few sets to experiment. I used 1, 1.1, 1.2, 1.33, 1.5 and 2 ohm values during my trials and have settled on the 1.2s to match my room acoustics.

I have been extremely pleased with the natural sound from the Maggies but will admit that people either love them or don't care for the planar low end. Since I use a subwoofer for Theater applications, I crossover the Maggies around 50 hz and have had great results. This product is definately a best buy!

The Magnapans were the speaker I got after listening to the Martin Logan Arieus,Snell type C/V, and Theil 2.2. The maggies just sounded better overall. The image hight was a lot larger than the Snell and Theil, and I think that makes these speakers stand out above the rest. I also like the way panel speakers sound compared to box speakers. The Arieus, with a cone driver for the bass, doesn't blend well with the electrostats. I don't belive you should mix the two types at all. All of these speakers are about $2000 and they all have strengths and weaknesses. The Magnepans are not as dynamic as conventional speakers, and while the bass is very tight and natural, it does not have the impact of the box speakers. They got a very good review in Fi and an ok review in TAS, but give them a listen!

Limpida come la voce di un dio. Una sensazione di ascolto "vera".I bassi non ci sono? Forse perché la perfezione non si nota!
Complimenti grande Magnepan.

Great sound but NO BASS! For $2000 there should be some bass without needing a powered subwoofer!
