I am using these spekers in conjunction with my YAMAHA RX-V1 Receiver. I spent many hours searching from store to store.. to come upon these puppies. Obviuosly, there are better speakers out there.. BUT, for it's price range. I found it to be the biggest "BANG for the BUCK"! The range and clarity is awesome. It will be money well spent.. if you plan on spending in this price range I recommend you find your nearset dealer for a test drive! I am sure you will be impressed too!

Strength:

Great bang for the buck, very nice sound.

Weakness:

Not audiophile level clarity, but very good, much better than most mid-level speakers.

These speakers are a great value. Tweeter has just marked them down to $500 for the pair, so I moved my FRx-5s to the rear and bought the 7s for my mains. I also have the FRx-C center channel and the FRx-S8 for my sub. The sub really rounds out the sound is perfect for the size room it is in. This whole setup is excellent for the money, and sounds really great with movies. I prefer the standard front speaker + sub for music as opposed to the 5-speaker stereo. It just sounds more natural.

The 7s don't sound as good as my roommate's Paradigm Monitor 11s, but they are not in the same class. For the money, I don't think you can go wrong.

Strength:

Sound quality: Clean, Natural, Musical. Real bang for the buck product

Weakness:

none for the price, strange grills though...

You really can't go wrong with the Mirage FRx-Seven. Jazz, classical and rock sound superb with these speakers. The FRx-Sevens have great clarity, they sound natural yet lively, have a wide soundstage with great imaging, and they're virtually transparant. They sound great at low and loud volumes. There is better out there, but if you're needs are less than audiophile grade or you're on a budget at this price you will not go wrong. Well worth the money ...and maybe more. An excellent value.

Bass response is good but if you're looking for mind numbing bass, you will still need a sub.

Strength:

good bass, good midrange, non-fatiguing highs, good imaging and wide soundstage

this speaker is very easy to like...it offers good bass response and a nice midrange and the tweeter is crisp & clear but not fatiguing...i've owned kef Q35 & 55's for about a year and after buying the mirage and letting them break in....the kefs sound like ass....honestly....the mirage are much easier to listen to...they don't fatigue you...you can actually listen to music for longer periods of time without strain....excellent product for $500...

Strength:

Accurate, sweet and warm reproduction of music, especially the human voice.
The tweeter just doesn't tire you out.
Easy ergonomics - a pair will blend into the room without taking it over.
Relatively efficient - (I am using a Yamaha RX-995 Receiver.)

Weakness:

Obviously, towers without built-in subwoofers will be base shy when A_B'd against those with, but you might not notice otherwise. The FRx- S10 will complement these with little compromise, unless the room is extremely large.

My latest foray into home components comes 25 years after my last, and my old Yamaha stereo receiver was still hard to unplug - It has been handed down to my daughter with a pair of FRx-fives - I've loved it so much over the years. I am so confident with Yamaha that I am loyal, just as I now will be with Mirage. I am impressed with their speakers - all of them - and am torn between adding a sub or trading up (a wonderful Tweeter perk) to the price-reduced OM-8's with built-ins. The cost for two OM-8's is now only $150 more than the Frx-7s and the Frx-S10 combined. Hmm - I would hate to part with the seven's because I love them after 11 months of living with them, but the OM-8's get great reviews and are considered very high-end. I'll have to bring a few favorite CD's and give a good listen.
Either way, I think this is a no-lose situation.

Strength:

Smooth and dynamic speaker that way outperforms its price

Weakness:

Double grill covers are a little awkward and lack style

Rega Elex integrated amplifier
Rega Planet CD
Transparent ultra link plus interconnect
Transparent Wave 100 single speaker cable

As this is being written I am auditioning a set of $3,000 Proac studio 125's and just finished doing the same with $3,500 Totem forest loudspeakers.

Verdict: The Mirage are outperforming both. Don't get me wrong, they don't sound better but sound so good given the relative price points. The Mirage retails at $900.

O.K. sure the Totem were more detailed and sure the soundstage on the Proac was deeper and wider, and had a lighter, airier more friendly sound as a whole BUT at three times the price.

If value had nothing to do with it then yeah I'd buy the Proacs. The honest truth is this. I can't justify spending that extra money because the incremental benefit is just not there.

The Mirage have a smooth, friendly sound with lots of detail and great imaging and depth. Note: these speakers really are at their best 3-5 feet from the rear wall. They are an OUTSTANDING value and CAN NOT BE BEATEN AT THE PRICE.

If you need speakers in the $1,000-$2,000 price range, give them a serious listen and you might just save yourself some money better spent on upgrading your components or cables.

I would probably give them four stars overall beacause there are better speakers out there but the value rating should be six stars so I give the overall rating a five to compensate.

Does nothing bad

Weakness:

Does nothing exceptionally well

This is a follow-up review to the one I've posted below. I
have since upgraded to a Denon AVR2800 driving the FRX-7s.
They sound excellent overall and I haven't heard them
do anything badly. The move up from my old Yam RXV-480
to the Denon made a big difference in clarity and
smoothness. These speakers, in many store auditions easily,
very easily, compete with $1000 speakers.

Over the several months of listening and auditions, if
I can state one single quality of these speakers that
make them a "best buy" would be their extremely neutral
reproduction of music - absolutely no emphasis on any
frequencies.

They have continued to be excellent in home theater. I have
FRX-C's and use the polk audio S4's as surrounds and
to date , I see no difference between them and much more
expensive surround systems.

Strength:

Full Clear Midrange Presence, Pricing, Quality

Weakness:

None for this product/price range

After reviewing many speakers in the $1,000. price range, I had made up my mind on the NHT Super six. Both NHT and Mirage (Energy) are very selective of the dealer they choose to sell there product. Going into Clearview Electronics in Kego Harbor, Michigan with my Santana & Don Henley CD's, was all set to get the NHT's when the salesmam wanted me to at least give a listen to the Mirage Fr-7's. Not only were they $100. less expensive, they blew the NHT's away in the mid-range and high range for fullness of sound. They gave the NHT's a "nasal" sound that became bothersome as we switched back & forth between the two. I bought the last pair in the store and as we were loading into the car, saw the box was punctured, opened and there was a superficial gouge on the cabinet by a hi-lo or something. The owner asked if I could live with it and offered them for $550. out the door. (He said it would cost more to ship back). What a great store with good no-pressure sales people. And these speakers are supposed to get better once they're broken in. WOW !!!!!!!!

Strength:

Bass, Highs, Soundstage, "Musicality"

Weakness:

Double grills look a little weird

Good speakers for the money. Of the ones I listened to,
the only better speakers for "true" reproduction was the
paradigm studio/40s, but they lacked the bottom end and
were 200 bucks more. I also noticed that the studio/40s
sounded tinny at lower volumes. One of the big reasons
why I went for the FRX-7s were because they sounded really
good at regular volume levels that I listen to. At louder
volume levels, the studio/40s were a little better, but
I don't listen to music at that level 99% of the time.
These blew away the B&Ws, mini monitors and the polk S4s.
(The polk S4s were an old left-over I still have)
Great tight bass (irrespective of positioning), neutral
and warm midrange and clean highs without sounding harsh.
Very wide soundstage, but I still haven't gotten a feel for
their 3rd depth of imaging.
All these opinions from a casual listener, I'm by no means
an audiophile and these are opinions based on purely
listening and taste tests.
I'm currently driving them with an old Yamaha RX-V480.

Strength:

Imaging, Clarity and true-to-life reproduction of recordings.

Weakness:

Remote. Need I say anymore? The dog didn't even like it.

The sound stage and clarity of these $700 speakers from the North have refreshed and invigorated my love of music. The NHT's could give them a run for the money, but not at this price. I have been running them in combo with a Denon AVR1801 and have found them to be a profound match. Warm mids and not too punchy bass combined with accurate highs allows these speakers to become almost invisible. Music flows effortlessly from the drivers. One note, banana plugs do not fit as neatly as I like into the posts. Bi-wiring is possible and recommended by the manufacturer. Burning in the drivers actually has an affect on their performance. The longer I listen, the better I like. Add a sub woofer and you might cry. Kudos Mirage!
