Casual Listener

Strength:

Deep rich bass and clean clear highs. You can listen to everything from classical music to heavymetal and dance music everything sounds great.

Weakness:

I can't find any. But I'm just a casual listener.

This is a great buy! The speakers can play all sorts of music and they sound really good with all styles. They also have a great prize value. I bought mine for 2999kr (about $350) at ElGiganten in Sweden. If you're looking for a pair of speakers that can play all kinds of music but you don't want to spend a fourtune. Buy Missions 703's. It will probably be the best buy you ever make.

Strength:

Clear high frequency, good midrange.

Weakness:

Cabinet looks cheap due to black painted wood.

This is an update from my previous review. (For the record my amplifier is a Denon AVR 1800). The Mission manual states the speakers require a 24 hour break-in period. I noticed a improvement after a week, however, 10 days was even better. The manual states the speakers must be facing forward for best soundstaging. I find placing the speakers about 9 feet apart and slightly facing inwards vastly improved the soundstaging. Also, replacing the front spikes with longer parts causing the speakers to tilt back about two (2.5) inches improves the sound. I listen eleven feet back. Ten feet back does not open the soundstage up. I noticed the crossovers make use of two (2)inductors, (2) resistors and (2) capacitors. From other feedback, using a ferrite core inductor is inferior to an open air inductor. Also, the factory supplied electrolytic type capacitors are inferior to either metal foil or polypropylene type capacitors. I will be replacing both the ferrite and electrolytic components in short order. Two CDs in my limited collection sound superior. These are the remastered Beatles 'Yellow Submarine' and Shania Twain 'Come on Over'. The Denon AVR 1800 includes Dolby Pro Logic, Five Channel Stereo and Two Channel Stereo. The Five Channel and Two Channel Stereo sound great with the Dolby Pro Logic coming in a distant third. The amazing part is the Two Channel Stereo provides a wide soundstage which sounds almost as lively as Five Channel Stereo. I do prefer the Five Channel Stereo, however, the other speakers I have listed above do not even come close to the performance of the Mission M703s in Two Channel Stereo. I make use of M701s for the rear channels and a M70c2 for the center channel. I believe I am going to replace the M701s with M702 rear speakers. In Two Channel Stereo, the M703 speakers sound better than the M701s. I am not referring to the extended bass range, the midrange and tweeter combination are just more seamless sounding when operating together. The M702 makes use of the same 200mm bass/midrange speaker that the factory installs in the M703.
I will update this report with the crossover modifications when completed. My current conclusion is the M703 is starting to reveal the entry level high-end audio. My rating of 5 & 5 stars is reflected in the price range. Overall rating would be a 2.5 or 3 when compared to a $3000 set of speakers!

PS- My previous entry stated 'Audition the M701!' which should read 'Audition the M703!'

Strength:

Clear sounding high frequency. Bass is extended to 50 hz.

Weakness:

Cheap looking cabinet finish. Lacking sharp, defined midrange, bass could be better defined as well.

I wish to update previous review of the M703. I mentioned earlier the M701 midrange is better than the M703 midrange. Simply, I prefer the M701 to the M703. Although the M703 bass is extended a few hertz, the M701 is better sounding with cleaner sounding bass and much better midrange. I believe the M701 cabinet and 6.5 inch mid/bass speaker is superior to the M703 cabinet and 8 inch mid/bass speaker resulting in better sound. I suspect the M702e shares the same mid/bass speaker and may also sound superior to the M703. I am going to have to downgrade the M703 from my previous review.

Equipment is Denon AV 1800, Pioneer DV-333 and upgraded interconnect cables.
