This is for the updated "i" model. I haven't listened to many different speakers, but after replacing the JBL floorstanding speakers I had I could hear a huge difference in quality of sound. I have a very large room with a 15foot stud and the Missions don't have any problem filling the room. They have good bass and work well for HT use as well as music. They are stylish looking and don't dominate the room visually. I am running these on a Sony HT "UK edition" amp.

With Mission pulling out of the US due to lovers quarrel with their distributor Denon, finding matching speakers for home theatre use will definately be interesting!!!

I auditioned several speakers before choosing these. The fact is no speaker for under $1000 even came close. These speakers have extremely smooth highs with excellent detail and clarity without being in your face bright. The mids are focused and balanced and the lows are full, punchy and well controlled. No matter how high the volume, they never sounded strained or compromised a work horse performance. They are very easy to listen to, no fatigue here. You will have to pay at least 3 times the price I payed for them to attain sound at this level. I Love'em!!!!!

(Price is in Pounds Sterling) This review is for the "i" version of these speakers - they have an updated crossover and an improved cabinet. I was using Mission m71 bookshelf speakers, and I bought the m74i floorstanders because I really liked the sound of the m71's, but I wanted more extended bass. The m74i's are large (about a metre tall) but very elegant looking and solidly built. They feature banana-pluggable, biwirable binding posts, although I single-wire them with QED Silver Anniversary. Each cabinet sits on four solid spikes, which screw into the base, and are tightened with a seperate nut, all of which is provided. At low levels, their balance is slightly lean in the midrange (although the midrange is precise, articulate and detailed), with a forward but clean treble, and powerful, well-extended bass. The speakers feature a large rear port, and if they are placed near a wall the bass can become boomy and uncontrolled in smaller rooms. I run them with the supplied foam bungs in the ports - in my smallish listening room this tightens up the bass and greatly improves the control, at the expense of a little extension. Stereo imaging is excellent for a product in this price range; not particularly deep, but nonetheless spacious and well-defined. The speakers are quite sensitive (around 91 dB/Wm) and do not present a particularly difficult load - my 40Wpc Rotel RA-02 is perfectly comfortable driving them to decent levels (although admittedly the Rotel amp is known to be gutsy). The slight fussiness with positioning and the reticent midband cost this speaker the full 5 stars - but if I could give it 4 and a half (or even 4 and 3 quarters!) I would. This speaker is ideal for home cinema, due to its detailed, accurate handling of voices and powerful bass, and is also great with music, the only caveat being the slightly lean midband. Having said that, I listen to a lot of classical and instrumental music and female vocals, and have no cause for complaint. At the MSRP of GBP300, this speaker is good value - but for the GBP210 or so for which they can be found online, they are an absolute steal.

tizz high frequency. Add 14,7 or 16,8 microfarad capacity especially poliester or polipropylene before connecting wire on the hifreq connector in biwiring connecting plate to reduce connecting in series tw capacity.

Cabinet is neutral without inprudent or unwanted resonances or coloration. The double midbass unit is very insensible to break up with my rotel RB 980 bx but it does perform very well with my technics SAE 1000 power amp. Bass is tight especially with the loudspeaker on spikes. It isn't very low extendend howewer it does 40 hz very well. Midbad is clear, a little avanced, with a good balance and soft. High frequencies are very bright and a little harsh. could generate unwanted effect with multistrumental tracks. I resolved this problem limiting tweeter frequency responce: i use 14,7 microfarad in series to red pin of high frequency on the rear of speaker without really modifying internal crossover. In this way the capacity of tw crossover get down from 5,6 microfarad to 4,2 microfarad. 1/5.6 + 1/14.7 = 4,2 You will lose a little of migh high responce but with my bright sounding power amps (Rotel Rb 980bx and also with my beautiful looking technics SA E 1000mkII the overall results is astonishing). Try this modification connecting wires on the rear of speaker.

bass! good for home cinema

does not gell together as well as i would have liked with music vocals can seem "wooden"

My m74i speakers were bought to be the front speakers in an home cinema system and for that they perform very well however musicaly i am still undecided while there is oodles of bass it just does not seem to be an all together sound i cant quite put my finger on it but compaired to my mission 773e speakers the m74 seems to be less involving i will however say that the m74s realy know how to rock and they open up alot when they are pushed hard still a great buy for the money but not everyones taste

It is the best all around speaker i ever have!!!AMAZINGLY AWSOME SOUND !!!!!The Mission 74i's play everything perfectly, they can handle the voice of the tele brilliantly and the bass is perfect. Clear high frequency and smooth. Not outstanding, but good midrange performance. British sound without too much veil. Very relaxing yet realistic.

Only three stars, (fair deal), for value because here in NZ hi-fi is pricey. But overall I love these things. I've had my Mission m74s for over a year and a half now, and the things respond to every change and upgrade I've made in my system. Sometimes vocals especially can sound awesome, a lot of presence and detail acroos the whole mid-range. So jazz and classical sound great too. Acoustic music comes through with a lot of depth and atmosphere. Simply, these speakers will respond to the quality of the components you match them with. Awesome. And they look great too, I got the beech but the rosewood finish looks good also. Black is dead.

The M70 series of Mission speakers are a hidden gem in todays market. Mission has moved their assembly operations to the far east to keep costs down, while their speakers are still engineered and produced in England. I originally auditioned B&W 600S3's, KEF Q7's, and the Mission M74's. All these speakers sound similar with minor differences. Where the Mission M74's really excell is in acoustic and deep musical sounds, giving a real feeling of warmth and character. The cost effective value of the M70 line is phenominal, you get speakers that easily outperform their competators that are twice to three times as expensive.

Ok, i tried a good few spkeakers out before this one, they all lacked something, i tried the eltax 6.3s, they were very good in sound, but didnt come in black and were generally ugly. The mordaunt short 904/906s, they just lacked bass and had their own weird version of treble(probably caused by the aluminuim). Wharfedale Zaldeck S-1000 (DJ speakers) great bass, great looks, no mid or treble. And also tried the SOny MF400Hs, they wre ok in all reas, had good bass, but just wanted better. Was gonna just stick with the MS904s or 6.3s, but then tried the M74s, i've never tried mnissions before, i heard they always had great bass, and they do. They look amazing, the bass goes deep(as much as the Zaldeck DJ 20hz speakers), great treble and good mids, they were good all round and excel in bass. Just what i wanted really, they dont have too much bass that it blurts everything out though, which is what made me stick with these. Although best suited with heavy rock, metal, industrial or dance i would think, very dynamic, the rotels of the speaker realm.
