I bought the Silver 5i's second-hand, on a whim at the end of 2016 or early 2017. I would give these speakers closer to a 4.5/5 for overall value on the used market, than the 4-stars I've selected (I have a hard time giving anything five stars). First thing's first: Proper placement of these is of utmost importance. I cannot stress this enough. What you get if you don't place them correctly: Flabby, bloated, all-over-the-place bass, no midrange/ terrible midrange suck-out, edgy, bright sound (OR, edgy, dull sound), too narrow of a soundstage if toed-in too much, OR too wide of a soundstage and lacking in adequate centre focus if not toed-in enough, and small soundstage if speakers are too close together. If you DO place them correctly, what you get is: Very good, quite fast bass (although somewhat lacking in the lowest registers, since it's only rated to drop to 38Hz), midrange creeps out of hiding/ comes to play, HUGE soundstage, with a large-sized performer in your living room. These speakers produce the performance on a grander scale than all of my other speakers. By that I mean that the singers seem physically larger in front of me than through other speakers I have (I have LOTS). Very good dimensionality (width, depth, and height), very clear and open, excellent for movie dialogue (in a 2.0 or 2.1 setup), good PRaT (pace/ rhythm/ timing). Not AS good as some other British speakers in that regard, but they can and do get your toe tapping. Besides placement issues, which I believe are responsible for pretty much all the negative reviews of these, other potential issues are: Bright equipment will reflect in these to the point of maybe becoming too bright and edgy overall, even WITH careful placement. I think these speakers require good quality, warm and robust sounding gear. I think these 5i's require a fair amount of power to hear them at their full potential. I don't have that kind of horsepower at the moment; the largest amp I have is 50wpc (Exposure 2010). It drives them well at most volumes, but runs out of steam at higher levels. At that point, the speakers sound compressed and congested (hard on the ear), and lose all their layering (they really can become a mess if over-driven/ underpowered). I don't normally listen at those levels, but i'm sure some people do, so I thought I'd mention it. I have a very strong, sneaking suspicion that if I were to connect a good, smooth-sounding power amp, I would be loving them even m Weakness:
Properly placement is critical - can't be stressed enough -Can sound hard/ glassy if underpowered or over-driven -Could use subwoofer augmentation for the lowest registers (but this could be a factor of using a bigger amp, which I don't have) - These are not for someone who expects to 'plop and play' and get good results. They require some effort to get the best out of them. - Good value on the used market Purchased: Used

listening experience depends on multiple factors.AND there is no perfect system or speaker.i have been quite pleased with my silver 5 monitoraudio speakers.especially when i purchased them for $250.00 including shipping cost. yes placement is a key factor.but not criticle enough to dismiss the musical pleasure.YES a good amount of power is desirable.use with a power amp if possible. if you listen to cds mostly, run your cd player directly into the amp inputs , eliminating the preamp.and yes a good set of speaker wire is a must.i have used van den hul tara labs and straight wire with good results.the bass response is tight and clean ,and i prefer my pair on the floor rather than on a stand.the midrange is always pleasing, keep in mind that reproduction of the human voice is the most difficult task for any driver.the higs are quite strong and solid .any harshness comes mostly from bad mixing on the cd, or room acoustics.idont know of too many speakers in the 1000 price range i would buy in place of the 5s.and certainly none for the 250 these cost me.
