Een pracht van een luidspreker, die eigenlijk te goed is voor zijn geld. Ik heb hem deze week in huis gehaald en ben nu al weg van deze luidspreker.
Hier kun je zeker geen buil aan vallen!

Break In time.

I'm fortunate enough to own 2 sets of these speakers. 1 set is used as my front's in my home theater set-up and the other is used as my surrounds(Overkill but it sounds awesome). I'm not going to go in to a big song and dance but,,,,,,,,I love these speakers. The sound quality is Excellent. Watching movies or listening to music they perform well. If you are after a clean sounding speaker with deep bass, these are for you. One thing that I will mention is that if you are going to buy a set, don't go cheap on power. These speakers like power and they like high current amps. My front's are being run with a Parasound HCA-1500A THX Ultra amp and it makes a world of diffrence compared to my rears which are being run via my Sony 777ES.I have swithced them while listening to music via the AB switch on my Sony and the diffrence is a joke. That is why I'm trying to hunt down another 1500A or move into a Parasound 5 chanell.

Beautiful speaker - very wife friendly - I was amazed I didn't get skinned alive for buying these without a pass from 'her indoors'. When they arrived my wife loved them - passing a very tough test there.

I can only say that the soundstage and coherence of these speakers is astounding and they get better every week. I coupled them with a Monitor Audio ASW 210 and the bass integrates very smoothly - very tight. They are driven by a Harman Kardon AVR7000 and sometimes a NAD T770. The HK suits these speakers better and I suspect they need the current that the HK provides. The NAD is a wonderful receiver - but seems too laid back to make the most of the crisp mid-range on the 9i's. So I relegated it to drive the MA Silver 7is & Centres on my home theatre system (the sudden arrival of the NAD is another story of wife friendly kit - but I did get a beating on that one!!!!). Still I am still alive to enjoy these wonderful 9i's.

I tried the silver 5i from Monitor Audio and was juat about to buy, when the salesman had just received the 9i. I had a demonstration of the two and found the 9i had more impact, dynamics and simply sounded very free and easy. The 5i is still in my view an absolute wonder, but when I heard the 9's I fell in love. I instantly paid out double the money I was so convinced. You really need to listen to the silver 9i before you buy any speaker. I bought my 9's in the U.K and took them back since I was on vacation there. However I did save money because the price in Austria is about 20% more than the U.K price.

I recommend the silver 9i with all confidence.

Detail, imagine, looks

I noticed that there were not a lot of write-ups on the Silver 9i's as compared to the 5i's so I decided to add my two cents worth. I wanted to compare and contrast the differences between the 9i's and 5i's and identify if the price is worth twice the difference.
The 5's have gotten a lot of attention after CES99 as well as the entire Silver Series. I remember strolling through the CES 99 show thinking I should take a look at the Monitor Audio set-up just in case something was new. I was a dealer for 2 years and thought the previous speakers (7xx series) were good but just an "o.k." value (just being honest). When I heard the 5's at the show I was very impressed as was the others around me. I figured they must be $2000 or so but when they announced they were $900 (later the 5i's went to $1000), I was shocked at the performance for the $$'s. My next thought were the possibility of these prototypes being tweeked and not what the end user would get because they sounded so good for the money (this has been known to be done at shows, NOT by Monitor Audio but by others so my mind wandered). When I got my 1st few pairs, I confirmed they were top performers.
This attention was later fueled by Home Theater Magazine's "Just Buy Them" review. Putting it in perspective, Monitor Audio Sales in the USA has quadrupled in 1999 and the pace has not let up. It is most typical for a small surge to happen after a good review and only the well deserved will prevail long term as word of mouth is more powerful than any article. Unfortunately, Home Theater gives positive exposure to just about any speaker or product (For that matter, so do most people in the Audiorview site) but these are truly deserving and it's an accurate review. My exposure to what is good or bad comes from the ability to listen to a lot of products at shows, in customers homes, sampling speakers in my home, rep's sending me samples etc. Frankly, I have heard a lot of speaker brands, and most of them do not cut it. If you ever have the opportunity to go to a show you also will be amazed how AVERAGE most system sounds for a ton of $$'s. Only a dozen rooms grab you in. A sad coment because their are hundreds of rooms. I diverge…
I figured, if the 5's are so good, the 9's must be better right? Well, I got in the 9's and put them in my system in April of 99. (The system then consisted of the Parasound HCA-2205A and the B&K REF20). The base seemed to be fuller than I liked and the mid-base dynamics were not as pronounced as the 5's. They did sound pretty good as many of you 9 owners know but I told all of my customers to go to the 5's as I thought the price/performance could not be beat…. This was the last pair of 9's I heard (or recommended) until the CEDIA show in Indiana. Monitor Audio was showing with B&K (B&K REF20 and the new REF7250 amp). I walked in and took a listen to the 9i's. They sounded A LOT better than what was in my home. No tubby base or missing dynamics or mid base!! In fact, VERY VERY impressive... Better than I remember the 5i's sounding.. I was puzzled so I cornered Monitor Audio's National Sales Manager and asked him what I was doing wrong. After talking, he identified to me I did not have the lower compartment filled with Sand or Lead shot (I knew this helped but got a little lazy), I should take off the tweeter cover CAREFULLY (no this will not void the warranty) and make sure the pins/spikes are touching the floor as compared with sitting on the carpet. I got a little busy with normal business till I again heard the 9i's at CES 2000. Again, the system sounded better than I remember with the 5i's. Since I was so damn impressed with the 5i's, I thought I better bring in a pair of the 9i's to do more research and give them another shot. Well, they sounded completely different…. VERY different in fact!! I used all the tweeks that was recommended by Monitor Audio. Even when I just pulled them out of the box and let them break in for a few hours I heard the same thing that I heard at the last two shows; much better than I remembered the original 9's. I called Monitor Audio to discuss the results and he confirmed that the 9i's ("i" stands for "improved") had some modification to the drivers as the 5i's did but the difference stood out much more on the 9i's. The tweeks made a big difference to my ear; from pretty good to extremely good!! My customers have know me to recommend the 5's over the 9's independent of price. Well, I have switched my recommendations and if you can swing the difference (twice as much), it is WELL worth it.
For those who do not have a dealer near by, the Monitor Audio's are best compared to and electrostatic speaker with impact. The light metal drivers are stiff and accurate which does not flex while accurately moving in and out. The result is PURE imaging, and tremendious detail as experienced with electrostatics without all of the downsides of elecrostatics. The National Sales Manager for Monitor Audio likes to call the 9i's a "5i on steroids". It is true the impact is more since two 6.5" drivers are used versus two 5.5" drivers. The 6.5" moves a lot more air (40% more) if we remember pie radius squared from geometry. The cabinet is also taller and has more depth so the speaker has a very good bottom end especially with proper placement. Still the size is wife friendly but definitely bigger. I would find it hard pressed for someone to think they are too big… Imagine and detail is still WORLD CLASS between the to models. Another difference that struck me was that the 9i's are smoother and more liquid than the 5i's and the vocals are fuller and more natural.
In conclusion, if you have another $1K in your pocket ($2K list) it is well worth the difference. Especially if you have a larger room the effect is highlighted. These are very efficient speakers and 100 watts plus are plenty to drive them. (Try the new inwalls for the rear for new construction as I have many delighted customers. Another great product from Monitor Audio.) The speaker is a pleasure to listen to and I would state THE best deal at the $2K price point. If you hear them and don't like them, they are either the non "i" version, wrong electronics mix, or improper set-up. Trust me, if you were at the CEDIA or CES 2000 show, or at my shop I am convinced you would fall in love with these 9i'!
Well, my fingers are tired but if you have any questions, feel free to contact me. I love to field questions but do support your local dealers.

Strength:

Excellent high end and midrange. Very smooth and "classic" sound. Outstanding imaging. Attractive design.

Weakness:

Weak on the low end. Hence not so hot for home theater or bass heavy music.

In my opinion this speaker is perfectly suited to the listener who gets his kicks from excellent imaging and will listen to primarily classical material from a higher end solid state or tube amp. Great speaker for vinyl or high end digital. Not so good for home theater or bass heavy music. Overall a very strong contendor especially for the price, but it's not such a well rounded speaker. Regardless, I give it a very enthuasiastic 5 star rating for sonic clarity, imaging, and great high end and midrange purity.

I demoed these with the rest of the Silver series. These are by far the best sounding out of the bunch. The rest are "very good" but no better in my opinion. I also demoed these back to back with the speakers I now own, the PSB Goldi's. I think that they compare very favorably. They have a slight edge with the high end and midrange but come in way behind on the bass and punchiness. They are, however, a more refined speaker for true audiophile like type listening.

auditioned these speakers at a local dealer & have to say that my initial perceptions were very disappointing. way too bright & quite harsh. dealer said they were brand new & needed some break in time, so i decided to give them another chance, so i went back about a week later. it sounded quite a bit better, but it was still too bright. i notice they were being run off some faily cheap electronics (sherwood newcastle with a toshiba dvd player), so i asked the dealer to hook them up to the all macintosh setup he had. they sounded much, much better. very smooth, articulate & open. they even did a good job on bass, very suprising for a pair of 6.5 inch woofers. the thing i liked best about these speakers is they are very fast & the bass did not lag at all. these speakers have a seriously high toe tapping effect. tonally they sounded fairly neutral & well integrated across the whole sound spectrum. i am sure they would have sounded even better if they had been set up properly, especially the bass response. they were not mass loaded with lead shot, which monitor audio provisions for (4 screws open a panel on the back - fill the chamber with shot to mass load the speaker). this tightens up bass response by eliminating cabinet resonances. also, the speakers were not set up on spikes, which come standard. these 2 tweaks would probably have eliminated the slight bloat i heard in the midbass & turned these speakers in to real giant killers, but cannot say for sure as i didnt get a chance to hear it with this configuration. i eventually decided to get the silver 5 from monitor instead of the silver 9's, mainly because they are even faster (is that possible? hard to believe but true), more neutral, and only a little less bass extension. Oh, they are also $1000 cheaper! final verdict for the silver 9 - put them with good electronics and they are very very good. i give them 4 stars, only because the silver 5 exists & they deserve that fifth star.

Strength:

Everything.

Weakness:

Maybe your electronics, but not the speaker.

I am using a 55 watt nakamichi with the 9's now. I actually like the 12 watt tube amp better though. the tube produces more bass and a bigger sound stage. the nakamichi provides better controlled, yet way less bass. there is nothing wrong with these speakers. i think the electronics is what makes the difference.

Overall sound quality, build, soundstage, diversity with various music genre

Weakness:

Long break-in period(but worth the wait),can't carry them around everywhere I go....85lbs w/leadshot, Oh yes only those with solid gear need apply!!!! :>)

First off let me tell you that I love electro-stat speakers. They are quick and convey a sound stage that is second to none. However, they don't do some genre of music well. So, I was searching for a speaker with electro-stat quckness but able to play a more diverse music genres well. Enter the 9i's. After break-in.....a few weeks of constant playing, they were extremely quick and accurate and conveyed a sound stage that you would associate with much more expensive speakers. I don't want to bore you with more techno-jargon so I will simply say if you are looking for one of the best bang for the buck speakers around look no further!!! They do music and home thx extremely well and I would doubt that you will find anything near this price or in some cases twice the price that will out perform them. Also my hat off to David Solomon at Monitor....he is a great guy and a pleasure to deal with....David if you read this please come to Home Expo 2002 so we can rock the house with the GR's....Alot of folks are dying to hear a full set-up!!!MJ

Strength:

Soundstage,tight bass,treble clarity.

Weakness:

Need to tweak to get best sound, but worth it.

I purchased the Monitor Audio 9i,12i,fb210,and silver surrounds at Pacific Sales in Orange County Ca. The owners manual suggests a sixty hour break in period. Out of the box these speakers are quite harsh sounding, but after about eighty hours of use the cones loosen a bit and the harshness is gone. The clarity of these speakers from cymbals to bass drum is excellent. Vocals and accoustic instuments are a strong point, although they have plenty of punch for rock as well. I called David Solomen at Monitor Audio to confirm some of the suggested tweaks. He advised me to remove the metal tweeter covers, which really smoothed out the treble. I filled the empty chamber at the back of the speakers with sand, which tightened up the bass noticeably. These are great sounding speakers. They retail for $2,000. I recommend purchasing them from Pacific Sales in Orange County Ca. They matched the lowest internet price I could find, and are an authorised dealer with full warrenty. Ask for Christopher, he will take good care of you.
