Strength:

Hardcore highs, screaming mids, & wall rattling bass

Weakness:

don't seem to get quite as low as i woulkd like them to sometimes

I bought these new in 1994 from a local dealer and have never seen another pair in a store, but let me tell you for $600.00 duckies a pair you won't come close to them with anything in or near that price range. These monsters have been guilty of knocking over, and breaking several things. I do run them off of all high end equipment though. I use all Onkyo Integra pieces with a TX-SV919 receiver. I have a 1984 model pair of bose 501's and with only one MTX it blows their doors off. These have been moved several times and have had no mercy with the cranking on them, and they continue to play follow the leader as long as you lead.

Strength:

sound,price,house shaking bass!!!

Weakness:

I bought these speaker about three years ago with an Onkio 8511 reciever and Onkio EQ. They have spent half there life at about 12:00 on the volume control and are responsible for many nick-nack deaths that were blamed on the cat!!! For the price these are the best sounding most bullet proof speakers I know of. I now use them with my Onkio 656 reciever and a Klipch 12 inch sub. They work great together for a home theater system. The bass out of the MTX's alone is enough (but if you got the hook ups you might as well use them right).I would STRONGLY recommend these speakers to anyone !!!!

These speakers are BY FAR the greatest product FOR THE MONEY perhaps EVER OFFERED. Ive owned then for about 6 yrs and NEVER had a days worth of trouble. Primarily have run them off a Yamaha AVX100U with the aid of a Yamaha GE30...and the entire BLOCK hears it!! I have them perched atop my 1970s vintage ATLANTIS mahogany cubes with the 15"woofs(MTX reloads) and the smoked glass tops...each stack is about 6 ft high and ROAAAARS!! If you can still find them GET THEM NOW!! Thanks to my good friend Darrin at Radio & TV Equip. who turned me on to these bad boys.

Quality

I think that I have offended some people that have purchased these speakers. I think I should explain my possition. When I bought these speaker (MTX AAL2230b) I was struck buy them! They were the second best sounding speakers in the shop only to a set of Infinity speakers that were twice the price! The specs were impessive! The sound was good. It didn't take long though for The first of the quality problem to show up. At first it was just a simple internal wiring problem (wires inside started to touch each other, resulting in a popping sound and thakfully no amp damage!) Since I have replaced the mids, and now one of the main drivers has gone south, hence the recent review on my part. For the first part of thier life they were used mildly in a theater setting. Now they are in my rec room being used with a 250 watt amp that I have used with many other set of speakers with much less impressive specs and have never really had problem. So, Dennis if you want to buy a set, maybe you will have better luck than me, they do sound good, but, I'll stick with my feeling that they do not live long under severe use. Maybe I was a little more harsh then I should have been, but it had only been about fifteen minutes since the driver had expired when I wrote the review! LOL

Strength:

Unbelievable BASS!!!! Bass never distorts no matter how loud you crank them. High quality constructed speaker. Price is very, very reasonable.

Weakness:

NONE

If you want a stereo that will get very loud, and have alot of clean bass you must get these mtx speakers. If you are looking for the perfect two channel setup you cannot go wrong with these speakers. Hook these speakers up to the Most powerful Harman/Kardon HK 3470 Stereo Receiver,, and a single disc AMC cd player and you will have one of the best two channel setups possible. I never would have imagined these speakers to be this good. I have listened to the klipsch REF r-3 and those speakers had good treble but the base was just not there. The woofers on these speakers barely moves at 10:00 on the Harman Kardon Receiver. I can not turn the receiver past 12:00 without seriously going deaf. These speakers do not distort with this kind of setup. It is just clean power with Bass that will punch in the back with 600 watts of force. If you have any questions just drop me an email.

For those of you looking for something along the line of the DCM KX212, or Cerwin Vega E315, or even the Klipsch KLF30, you should check out these speakers.
Although i've heard them all, and like the Klipsch the best (I like Horns), the price difference was unjustifiable. I got my MTX for $165 a piece from an Arcade supplier, and they were delivered in 2 days...In a Semi-Truck. They frieght charge was only $60. They are big, about 40"h x 15"w x 15'"d and they weigh about 90lbs a piece. They sound great for what they are, and they quality is quite good for the money. 3/4" super dense Particle board, two 12" woofers with 2 inch voice coils and massive magnets. 5" midrange in its own enclose, and a quartz loaded horn tweeter that is crisp and clear (I like horns). Although they are efficient the are rated @ 4 Ohms, so I would be cautious when hooking them up to cheaper ($500 or less) mass market recievers rated @ 8Ohms. But a nice inexspensive high quality integrated like the NAD 314 even only @35 watts, could make these speakers scream. They are a little less efficient @ (93db) then the competition but my Carver A500X can cause ear bleeds for hours at about 9 O'Clock and never even gets warm, but with the 4Ohm load my amp is putting out 400 watts, however I have never seen my meters go past 70watts, even at ear bleed levels .The bass is outstanding, even at low volumes there is plenty of punch, and it gets better as voulme increases. Even with the two 12's the bass is always punchy, never boomy like the CV's. The midrange can get lost if the bass is to high or at higher volumes but for the money, I have yet to find a speaker that can play what i like, Rap, Jazz, Rock, Alternative,at the volumes I like, moderate to loud, for even twice the price I paid.

The only gripe is the spring speaker wire terminals, but with the Monster Cable Gold termination pins they are tolerable. I might even switch them to 5 way binding posts I like them so much.

If you listen to anything this side of strictly classical, and you have the room, I recomend these speakers.

The MTX 2230 are some of the best that I ever seen. Almost every bar, club or dance use's MTX where I live. That tell's you how good they are. With 2 12" a 5" mid and a horn these thing's rock! They are vary good power wise they say that they hold 600 watts max but almost any amp can drive them. I have a 70 watt Marantz int. amp and I can't even turn it 1/2 way! For rock, rap, r and b and Jazz these are for you! This is a must buy, check them out!!!!

Strength:

Incredible sounding base. Rated from 38Hz to 22k. 300W RMS
600W Peak. 2-12 inch woofers, nice

Weakness:

Power hungry

500$ and a 10 year warranty, parts and labor, I'd buy them again if it was right. Well worth the money, especially if you like to play with your stereo, tough speakers I thought.

Once I heard these speakers I knew I had to have them ! Bass response could be just a wee bit lower. The mids and highs more than make up for the lack of the low end.I regret only using 1/2 of the power on them, as my larger amp a Carver CM 1090 These speakers reproduce a pleasent music EXPERIENCE, rather than just sound at any volume, with any type of music. The best part is that the price was right. For a hundred dollar bill, and my old tackle box. ONLY IN KENTUCKY !!!

Strength:

They ROCK THE HOUSE!!

Weakness:

I personally can't push the 600 watts, or even the 300 watts of RMS power handling

I bought these massive speakers at ABC warehouse for a mear $600 o.t.d, and let me tell ya, they rock!! These puppies can take 300 watts RMS, and 600 watts peak......I however am only able to push 80 watts......yet they're still determined to make my ears bleed. The highs and mids these speakers put out are awsome!!! The bass.....thumps, and I'm only pushing 80 watts per channel from my sony dolby digital receiver, which I purchased for these speakers because it has a 4/8 ohm switch (these are 4 ohm speakers). I also own a pair of polk audio surround sound speakers, and center speaker. when this set up is hooked to my dvd player via monster cable digital toslink....look out, and glue down the knicknacks, 'cause when The Matrix is playing, you're in for some serious sound!! But being the bass craver I am, and also the fact I have a pair of subwoofer pre-out, I'm gonna go ahead and buy a Velodyne CT150 15" powered subwoofer for about $600, but when I come up with $3000 in the near future, a Velodyne HGS18 subwoofer (3000, yes, 3000 watt 18" powered subwoofer that respondes way down to 15hz). But don't get me wrong, these MTXs with their dual 12"ers, rock the bass well enough!
