I have these set up with a Harman Kardon AVR20 receiver and an inexpensive Sony CD player. I listen to predominantly classical, jazz and gospel music .These speakers sound great on just about any kind of music. Highs are clear, crisp and clean; mids are natural with just a slightly "boxy" sound on certain vocal recordings ( this might be more due to the recording than the speakers).I have never subscribed to the idea that their are big differences between cd players and amplifiers, but the superones proved me wrong. I can't wait to upgrade to a better cd player. By the way bass is more than adequate if you live in a small apartment like myself. You will only miss the bass on pipe organ and certain reggae recordings . For the price it is unbeatable.

Purchased SuperOnes for my bedroom system last week.I've heard them before with a subwoofer and thought they
were the best you could buy for $350.
In my bedroom the speakers are on top of a bookshelf about
18" below the ceiling and close to the back wall. I also
listen with my ears about one foot from the back wall.
The bass reinforcement from the walls and a small
boost with the bass control makes it possible
to listen at modest volumes without a subwoofer.
The tweeter was a little too bright (unlike SuperZeroes),
but not a problem because of my speaker location.

I did a comparison with my other speakers at home:
EPOS ES11's and SPICA TC-50's (I have three stereos).
Using subwoofers, I actually preferred the SuperOnes
because the EPOS' were too loud in the midrange and the
SPICA's tweeters were too bright. Using an equalizer,
to flatten frequency response, the EPOS was best. I was
not able to improve the SuperOnes very much -- very
unusual based on 30 years of experience with equalizers
and sound analyzers. That suggests the SuperOnes had a
relatively flat frequency response (except no bass below
about 60 Hz.) without equalization. I auditioned the
$250 B&W 302's and planned to buy them unless I found a
better previously-owned speaker under $300. A few weeks
later I found used SuperOnes for $250. If you have to pay
$350 for the SuperOnes, I'd recommend the $250 B&W's
because the SuperOne tweeters are a little bright if
your ears are on-axix with the tweeters -- a problem
I did not notice when the SuperOnes were introduced.
I wonder if NHT revised them? The Tannoy Mercury M2
has received rave reviews but is not sold anywhere
in the Detroit area -- it's another alternative for
the SuperOnes.

For the money they are an aceptional buy. True the sound is not for everyone. As NHTs are famous for showing the flaws in recordings and playback systems. If you like a speaker that is a little on the mushhy side hidding bad recordings and cheap electronics there are lots of choices.
If you want to hear what was recorded... NOW HEAR THIS!

Real world scale I would have to say 4+. For the money and with a good sub tough to reat.

Based on the comments from this site and the reviews in Home Theater magazine I purchased a pair of Superones to replace a pair of Optimus LX-5s as my bedroom speakers. No way, too bright and harsh on classical music and Latin amor music. They hurt my ears.
I tried changing the cables and brougt new interconnects. A little better but not much.
Tried them in the living room to replace my Advent Laureates, where I listen to
Latin, 70s and 80s Rock and Soul.
Huggh.
They sound to cold and analytical. No warmth.
They can't get me moving and shaking, clapping my hands and stomping my feet.

Most of all this experience made me realize that speakers are a very personel, individual thing. Anyone and everyone has to audition speakers to see if they have the sound you like!!

One Star.

Before purchasing the NHT Superones I auditioned other monitors (paradigm, energy, kef, klipsch, audio physics,) I was most impressed with superones when I first heard them. Some of the other speakers I auditioned had more bass and could play a bit louder, but as far as overall sound quality the superones seemed the most adept. They reveal the recorded music in an unrestrained sense with accuracy and skill. They wont cover up any flaws in a particular recording you may be listening to. They simply reveal the music exactly as it is. Some of the recordings I play may sound a tad bright, but when I try another recording I can swim in a sea of pleasant music. Obviously the flaw lies in the recording. I would imagine that buying better electronics would polish up, to a great degree, the weaknesses of bad recordings. These speakers would probably do better with a bit smoother electronics. I am currently using a Denon AVR 2500, cheap cd player(upgrade in the works, just can't decide), and wireworld orbit speaker cables. I am impressed that with these inexpspensive components ( especially my crap boom box cd player. I wonder what kind of toy D/A converter that baby has? ) I get such great sound. I also must mention the interesting experience I had when I brought home some audioquest type 6 speaker cables($140 for 8ft) to compare with my wirewold orbits($85 for 8ft). When first doing a comparison on my friends JBL L5, Harmon Kardon settup the differences were subtle. On the Superones it was like night and day. The wireworld Orbit cables were clearer, more balanced, had much better transperancy , and lacked the overbearing, less accurate bass that the audioquest type 6's exhibited. I dont believe alot of speakers could reveal such differences. I must be noted that speakers are lower in sensitivity and exhibit a lean balance . The wont fill your room with full range sound that many floorstanders can but they will they have the ability to show you the truth and with right amp maybe even a taste of bliss.(merely speculation)
In my humble opinion the best speaker in its price range. Better in some areas than speakers costing much more.

P.S: I must mention that the audio physics virgo I auditioned was an excellent speaker but it's price ($2000) and its size kept me from considering it. For that much money I'd like full range.

I am rating this speaker for its class and little bit more.

IMAGING: 4.5 (ENVELOPING, ESPECIALLY WITH THE RIGHT RECORDING)
ACCURACY: 4.5 (IS THIS GUY IN MY ROOM HITTING THOSE DRUMS?)
CLEAN: 4.5 (THE INSTRUMENTS EXIST IN THEIR OWN SPACE)
BASS: 4.0 (ACCURATE BUT A BIT ROLLED OFF)

It is quite sad that these days one can not use this forum to express how they fell about a product without getting attack and feel the needs to defend himself. Gee was very wrong to make the assumptions without basis. As it turn out, I did not listen to any of the speakers in the stores or even the city he think I did. Just the opposite, both Klipsch (KLF10)and NHT (SuperOne, 1.5 and 2.5i) were in a so call "high end" store. I was planning to buy either the Super One or 1.5. (I had listened to them in a more casual way before in yet another store). As it turn out, I found the NHT too bright (BTW, I also found Klipsch's KSF10.5 too bright. Compare it with the SuperOne, I would take SuperOne) for my tast after switching two different receivers and one amp. To me, NHT is probably ok with some tube amp except they are not efficient enough.
Gee, if you like to exchange ideas further please e-mail me. If you see some one's review does not match your view by all means post your own view but plase do not drag other people's review into yours with a condescending tone. This forum is already full of it. We don't need more. My apology to every one else. Had Gee provided an e-mail link I would have use it.

SuperOne is a good speaker. It is just a bit too bright to my tast and it does need a sub for the bass. I standby my rating of 4 speakers.

Recentely compared the Super One and Klipsch KLF10 in the same room, NHT 2.5i a 1.5 in different room. The mid and high of the three NHTs are very similar. Compare to the KLF10, the Super One is too harsh on the highs. Better in the mids but no real lows. The sound stage is very good for its size. The only surprise is while a lot of people think Klipsch's horn design is harsh on the highs, NHTs are even more so. The Super One was connected to a Yamaha but the 2.5i was with some Mac. Since they sounded similar with mid to hign end amps, it led me to believe NHT has a brighter highs than the Klipsch.
We have also listened to Energy A3+2, A2+2, C2, C6. Super One is a better speaker than those Energy.

Consider the price of the Super One, I would say it is the best value in theNHT line. Four speakers.

Judging by Lu's reviews of the NHT, Klipsch, Eosone andEnergy speakers. He must have been listening at Superco Home
Theater(a Chinese Circuit City-Let me sell you a stove with
that amp) with wall-wall, floor to wall carpeting, Best Buy and
Good Guys in Rowland Heights - a one mile radius. Not exactly
the best places to audition audio equipment. And all those speakers
evaluated in probably a weekend.

The NHT Superones is actually more detail in its
presentation and more system critical than the Klipsch.
In general, Yamaha, Pioneer (non-Elite) and Denon are
rather bright to begin with. The NHT Superones is just
letting the listener know that somewhere along the chain there
is a mismatch or a flaw.

The Klipsch KLP & Synergy series as well as the new AR HO series,
its market is clearly aimed at the Home Theater crowd and karaoke
enthusiasts (efficiency, high peak power, deep bass with slower bass
roll off).

For music, the NHT Superones (matched with the NHT 2pi) is clearly
superior in imaging, soundstaging with depth and detail presentation.
My friends that works (or formerly worked) at the
MP and RH Superco Home Theater stores would agree with me. Basically,
they are selling a bunch of Klipsch because of the low rumbling bass. Bring
Chesky Ultimate Demonstration (Sara K.) disk and compare the Klipsch
with the NHT 2.5i with compatible electronics for even more revelation
in what detail and depth means.

Good Value for the money. Superones with NHT 2pi sub (to handle the bass
below 85hz.). However, with a combine price of $1100, it also competes
with the NHT 2.5i, Vandersteen 2ce, or speakers from Hales Design,
Sonus Faber and B&W ( for a couple of $100 more). With all these
real choices and there is really no need for the mass market stuff.

PS-Treat your ears by visiting Audio shops (Bose and Cambridge
Soundworks outlets -don't count) that lets you match and arrange the
speakers for a proper audition. With decent interconnects, speaker cables
and a knowledgeable staff. Do so... only with the intention to buy in
the not too distance future. HIFI 98 in L. A. in June.

If the Klipsch is 5 then the NHT superone by itself is a 8, but it's not.

You can not go wrong with these speakers!!!! The best speaker I have heard for the money period. Any review I have read has been positive. Stereo Review's Julian Hirsch was very impressed, and he knows his stuff. They are known around the audio world as giant killers, and they are just that. If you are looking for a bookshelf speaker, or any speaker go and find these and listen to them. You will not be sorry. I'm a NHT customer for life if they keep this up!!

I have owned the SuperOnes (xu) for a couple of weeks and am extremely pleased. I auditioned the Paradigm Mini Monitors and the B&W 601's, but thought that the SuperOnes sounded the most accurrate. As an added benefit, the SuperOne's take up less room, and can easily be mounted on the wall. For a relatively inexpensive price you get an excellent speaker which I highly recommend.
