Strength:
Outstanding detail, soundstaging, and imaging. They make a good system sound like the performers are in the room with you.
Weakness:
None I had been looking for a full range, high end loudspeaker to replace my Meadowlark Kestrel 2s. After researching my options and speaking with John at Ohm Acoutics, I pulled the trigger and ordered the 100 mk-2 model. I will never regret that decision. To my ear, these speakers perform flawlessly. They turn a recording into a musical experience. Unlike many speakers, these make you feel as though you are at a live performance. Very large and open soundstage with excellent imaging. They are unusual looking due to their unique driver design. My wife and I find their obelisk-like design quite attractive. I also found that their placement in our room for optimal performance was fairly easy and facilitated by their being on casters. Once again, the unique driver design allows them to be placed much closer to the wall than rear ported speakers. I truly believe that Ohm Acoustics provide that finest value in loudspeakers on the market. One would have to pay several times their price to get a loudspeaker that could match their sonic qualities and you will never find one with a soundstage as large. With a 120 home trial period, you owe it to yourself to audition a pair of Ohms before making any purchasing decision. They get my highest recommendation and are a truly special speaker. I recently purchased Ohm Walsh 100s. The sound quality is fantastic. Also dealing with the company was an excellent experience. I would highly recomend these speakers. |

Strength:
Imaging. Natural, room-filling sound. No need for a central speaker AT ALL with a home theater (try THAT with regular speakers!). Found that with home theater, sounds better in regular stereo mode than "phantom" Dolby surround. Good, smooth bass response, though not room shaking. Good value (though luck and Ohm's concern for customer satisfaction worked for me).
Weakness:
New grills are still "cheap" looking in my opinion. Somewhat uneven frequency response. This review is for an upgraded Walsh 2, also known as the "Super 2". I purchased a used pair of Walsh 2's on E-bay, knowing that they needed to have the grills replaced and the drivers "reconditioned" (foam rot in the cans). Ohm still performs both through their web site. To make a long story short, the repaired drivers were damaged by UPS during return shipment (expertly packed, but the drivers shook loose WITHIN the cans). None other than John assisted me with resolving the issue, and let me upgrade to the 100 MK-2 driver at a very fair price. Replacing the Walsh 2 drivers is NOT an easy job, as you have to replace the crossovers, internal wiring, and the driver itself. This requires knocking out all of the internal bracing, pounding out the crossover, regluing in the new speaker terminal board, re-attaching the internal bracing, and mounting the new driver. Ohm's kit was very complete, but I damaged one of the driver baffle boards (it IS a 25 year old cabinet!). I also found that one of the cabinets was splitting at the corner, which also had to be re-glued. When it was (finally) all put together, I was initially disappointed. As shared in an earlier review, these speakers TAKE TIME to "loosen up". I've always viewed breaking in a speaker with skepticism, but with these speakers, it DOES matter. Imaging is excellent, though the sound is more "relaxed" than most modern speakers. Very natural sound with good bass response (particularly for the size). I did find that I had to "tune" each speaker by lowering the dampening material in the cabinets (to give more air volume behind the drivers), then re-installing the cabinet. Strength:
The sound is wide and deep. Bass is very tight and the stage is incredible. I've tested the speakers in my home theater system with and without the subwoofer. The bass is stronger and tighter with the subwoofer OFF! It must be their coherent sound with the Walsh driver. And the two surround speakers make Dolby and DTS sources incredible. I live in a condo and can't listen to music at the levels I listened to when I was younger. But I can still feel the bass at low levels. (When my neighbor goes out of town, I go LOUD and boy do these Ohm's deliver). You can't do better than these speakers, which are relatively inexpensive. And you sure can't do better doing business with Ohm. It was a real pleasure. By the way, they were a few days late on the shipping of my recent order. But that was during the blackout when UPS couldn't ship. All in all, I couldn't expect a better shopping experience.
Weakness:
None other than I'd like to see perhaps a "silver" cabinet which is more in today's style. I originally bought Ohm F speakers in 1975. They were the best speakers I ever heard. I thought Ohm went out of business but last year I found out that they sold from the factory only. I bought a pair of Walsh 100 MK 2's and boy was a happy camper to rediscover Ohm. Since then, I've changed my furniture and the rosewood cabinets didn't do with my new furniture. I contacted Ohm and purchased 2 Walsh 100 Omnis (tweeter facing up rather than forward). I mentioned to John that the cabinets didn't go with my new furniture. John sent me different cabinets for a $100 charge and paid the return shipping as well (which cost $150!!!). Can you imagine better service? Similar Products Used: DBX Soundfield speakers. Used between the Ohm F's and the newer Ohms. |

Strength:
Great bass and nice midrange and vocals. Great for my 2-channel system or even 5.1. No need for subwoofer or center channel. Goes from 29-20,000kHz.
Weakness:
Needs a bit more power but the larger gauge wire helped. This review is for an upgraded pair of Ohm Walsh 2’s with the 100-MK 2 drivers, also referred to as “Super 2’s” purchased through Ohm Acoustics. I was interested in upgrading my stereo system to 5.1 or better. I own a pair of OW2’s purchased in late ’87. I was looking on the Internet and found out that Ohm was still in business and sells factory direct. I saw that they had a Sub/Sat series and that I could trade in my current pair towards new speakers. I called Ohm and spoke to non other than John Strohbeen, President of Ohm Acoustics. We talked about the Sub/Sat series. He told me about the upgrades with the 100-MK 2 drivers for my current speakers or getting an upgraded pair from Ohm. (They take trade-ins and put the new drivers in the old cabinets). I liked the pyramid shape. We talked about placement and 5.1 systems. John said that I could stay with my current two channel receiver. The new 100-MK 2 drivers would produce enough bass and were clear enough for vocals that I would not need a separate subwoofer or center channel. He even told me of a way to wire my second channel rear speakers for surround sound effects. It did work. The setup in my living room has the entertainment system in one corner with the main speakers on either side. I faxed John a layout of my living room to be able to discuss various options. After looking at my layout, John suggested that I put one speaker in each of the remaining 3 corners for better surround sound. I was able to get a second pair of OW2’s through the Internet and replaced the little speakers that I had been using. The sound improved, yet I did have that “dead spot” in the corner without a speaker. With the new upgrade pair, I now have 3 normal OW2’s in those corners and the Super 2’S as the main. John is very professional and knowledgeable. He did not try to sell me something that I didn’t need. In fact, he would also not recommend some of the choices that I was suggesting. He took the time to talk, listen and explain. I never felt rushed or a bother to him. I was in contact with him by phone or e-mail for several months. As it turns out, I had to wait over a year to be able to purchase my upgraded pair with the 100-MK2 drivers. (September 11th affected all of us and my wife was downsized shortly after that – it took over 1 year for her to gain employment again). He remembered me when I called to inquire about what he had in stock for the “Super 2’s”. The upgraded pair came in triple packed boxes. Good thing too as one of the packages had a hole in the outer box that was starting to penetrate the next box. The speakers were undamaged when I unpacked them. I set them up and have been breaking them in for about a month now. These speakers do need about 50 hrs to break them in. I have noticed the bass getting deeper and the midrange and highs getting clearer the more I play them. I also got some 12 gauge speaker wire from John, and that made a tremendous difference in sound level. I plan on upgrading the one speaker behind the couch to an Omni version of the 100-MK 2 for better, more even rear surround sound. John did recommend this and also recommended that the best situation would be to have all 3 rears being Omni speakers for my setup. Maybe later. Similar Products Used: Ohm Walsh 2's |

Strength:
Clear vocals, deep bass. Balanced, natural sound
Weakness:
They do take a lot of power. I had to turn my front channels up about 8 dB hotter to match the level of my center and surrounds. Beyond that, nothing I've noticed so far. This review is actually for an upgraded Walsh 2, which Ohm President John Strohbeen personally assures me has the same performance as a Walsh 100 Mk 2. One word: OHMigosh!!! I had no idea what I was missing until I heard it. In my search for the perfect speakers, I went to an upscale home audio installation store. The owner sold primarily two brands of speakers. He very snobbishly told me, “All my speakers are like fine wine. This brand is red wine, and that brand is white wine.” I didn’t buy anything there. Following that analogy, these speakers are water. Clear, clean, fresh, pure water. No artificial colors, no artificial flavors, and no preservatives. Just a good clean natural sound. Ohm’s website says the Walsh speaker design makes dialogue more intelligible. True. Voices are so natural sounding you’d think the performer must be hiding inside the speaker. Acoustic instruments like guitars and pianos sound almost real. I’ve listened to pipe organs in German cathedrals, and I’ve listened to CDs of organ music on these speakers. They’re awfully close to the real thing. Highs are crisp, midrange is clear and open, and the bass is rich and authoritative, yet clean. Everything just sounds like it ought to. My wife described them as, “pleasant sounding,” and, “satisfying.” She even likes the way they look. I cannot overstate how important Wife Acceptance Factor is to a happy marriage. One of the previous reviews says you will need a subwoofer. Another one says you won’t. Who can you believe? I can tell you that I’ve got a 12” 100W sub with R & L inputs hooked up to the R & L outputs on my receiver, and I turned it off because these babies actually put out more, better sounding bass than it does! People talk about the great imaging. I’ve only had them a few days, so I guess I haven’t gotten the placement quite right yet. I hear a little of the 3D effect people talk about, and it’s quite striking. But I haven’t been able to pinpoint the locations of instruments yet. I’ll have to play with it some more. These are truly surprising speakers. I’ve listened to highly regarded speakers costing much more, and I honestly like these better. Bottom line, they just sound…right. Strength:
excellent soundstage and wide "sweet-spot"
Weakness:
none Like the above reviewer, I also went for a customer veneer finish on the speakers (mahogany) which looks great. While I agree with most of his comments, I don't feel that the Ohm Walsh 100 needs a subwoofer at all. Similar Products Used: unique product |

Strength:
Excellent soundstage and spacialness to the delivery. Great large soundstage mid's and surprising highs. unique styling.
Weakness:
limited bottom end from the single walsh driver, however the sub fixes this. After a long wait (2 months) for delivery (I spec'd a custom teak veneer) and a 50 hour break in period I am pleased with the purchase. These are the mains in my home theater set-up which accounts for 70% of my home use. Similar Products Used: there is no other speaker similiar to the unique walsh drivers that I know of. |
