-Loves to be played loud!! -Absolutely Gorgeous, these things look like they should cost 5k minimum. -Vifa tweeter is never harsh -An absolute steal for the price
Weakness:
-Sound best with gobs of clean power, I use a marantz SR6300 with them and certainly wouldn't want to go with anything less and many times wish I had much more as I feel I am cheating myself of what the 750's are capable of. -They can be a bit tipsy on carpet without the risers which are an additional $150. -Your friends who spent way more for lesser equipment may not speak to you for awhile..... This review is for the original 750's not the signatures. I finally decided to give these speakers a shot after testing various other similarly priced products from B&W, Paradigm, PSB, and Klipsch among others. I'm glad I did as none of them touched what the 750's brought to the table at the under $1500 market. The highs are silky smooth, tight punchy bass, and a lush midrange gave them the best balance of all that I tested. Also these speakers just beg to be driven to loud levels. Whereas most speakers highs could become too bright when played loud, these speakers stay smooth well into volumes most would consider obscenely loud but are just perfect for my listening habits. All together a great product by av123, I would be hard pressed to find anything else I could want in a speaker at this price point. Strength:
Good midbass at moderate levels. Has a marketed WOW factor. they sold fast on audiogon.
Weakness:
Incomplete soundfield. Poor performance at lower volume levels. Panning with RSC200 is poor. Bass is uncontrolled at acceptable levels of HT performance and becomes a distraction. poor quality control. two drivers were not operating on first delivery. small splits in the finish on second delivery. i'd be scared to own past warranty times. The speaker is an eye catcher that has a very 'different' sound. It has some clarity, but something is not right above ~ 500Hz. There is a noticeable and annoying dip in the soundfield as well as uncontrolled responses at high volume levels. Dialogue sounds like it is coming from behind the wall. When the gain is increased to meet acceptable amounts of clarity, the midbass drowns the listener out. Overpowering and distracting when attempting to enjoy a nonexistant upper sound spectrum. Response curves look like bad ski slopes from 500Hz to 20kHz. Most points taken off for poor level matching across the soundstage. Strength:
Easily competes with anything costing twice as much and some even more. BTW they are the only speaker I've heard that I can honestly say that. Lot's of others say this, but these really perform like it. Beautiful finish.
Weakness:
Can be knocked over easily, they are kind of top heavy, so be careful. Getting the 750 Risers's help though. Other than that none. After months of research looking and auditioning many different speakers at local dealers, I saw an add for the Rockets on Audiorevolution.com. I then read the review for the Rockets on the Audiorevolution.com website, it made me very curious. So I then went to the AV123.com and spent a few months just reading literally everything ever posted in the forums there. I then decided to take the leap and purchase the #2 Rocket HT system. Doubt immediately ensued, because no matter how good anyone else says it may be, you could still not like it. After receiving the package though and opening it up I was amazed at how good it all looked. I had been at many, many local dealers and looked at speakers well beyond my price range and felt as though these looked just as good if not better than most of those other really high priced speakers. Something that made buying these speaker easier is the fact the person behind them was a co-founder and designer at Genesis Loudspeakers, and just all of his other knowledge and background in audio and electronics. I figure if Genesis use to make $135,000 speakers, how bad could the Rockets be? They are GREAT! The Sig 750's can handle movies with vigor, detail, and slam. I bought them primary as a home theater speaker but am amazed at how they can handle music too. 1st movies: The Sig 750's are fantastic for movies requiring the utmost in action and special effects. All 3 LOTR movies are phenomenal using the Rockets. The detail I can hear using the Rockets that I couldn't hear before is great. They also do well in movies or scenes that don't have that those huge special effects, but still require all the detail, like Kill Bill Vol. 1. The end sword fight at the club is amazing sounding, just hearing the blades slice thru the air (and people) is a treat. One of the biggest things I notice with what they do with movies, is how well they play the soundtrack during action intense scenes. Again Kill Bill Vol. 1 is a great example, another good one is Black Hawk Down, and the LOTR trilogy. The 750's let you hear all the music, and all the sound effects, without drowning one or the other out. When set to "Large" via the receiver they can also put out a fair amount of bass. A good movie to test this on is Saving Private Ryan. You can feel the rumble of the blast's and really feel it at the end when the tank comes roaring into the crater where Tom Hanks and Matt Damon are. For music they are surprisingly good. I find myself listening to more music than I ever had before. The soundstage is very large, and depending on the cd, sacd, or dvd-audio disc the vocals or instruments seem to be really in the room with you. The Burmester demo cd's really shine on the 750's. The midrange is the obvious strong point to the 750's. It is so lush and yet so clear and detailed. The midrange is what everyone I've had over to listen comment on. The highs are I guess are "laid back" slightly. To me I really wouldn't say laid back, more just not ear piercing, but not missing any detail. They are sweet and smooth is a better way to describe them. You can listen to them all day at loud volumes and have no fatigue or pain. The bass is very good for the 5.25" drivers, and is very tight and fast. If you like a lot of bass or want the real low stuff for 2 channel then you may want a subwoofer. I very highly recommend these speakers, and if you have the chance to demo a set thru Audioenvy.com then I would take the opportunity to do so. Or just buy them I guess, and if you don't like em return them. Similar Products Used: B&W, Def Tech, AR, Monitor Audio, Atlantic, Paradigm, Aerial (lost to Aerial but those cost 5x as much). |

The following review is from "hometheaterforum.com" and was written by David Boulet. I have pasted a link here because it is a very descriptive review. Enjoy. The ratings of 5 are based on what Mr. Boulet would obviously have left here on audioreview. http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=97038&highlight=rocket |

Strength:
SMOOTH yet detailed sound. Buttery midrange- never heavy. Tight midbass. Big and wide soundstage with great imaging
Weakness:
May not be for everyone (if you like a brighter speaker) Not a lot of really low bass. This is a review for the Ebony 750 signature model. This is a truly wonderful speaker. First of all, the build quality is stunning. BEUATIFUL real wood cabinets and piano black caps make these speakers a conversation piece. Furthermore, the shape of the cabinet is gorgeous as well. Now for the sound- Overall, a great sound. The soundstage is very deep and wide, with a slightly laid back presentation. For example, when listening to Diana Krall with B&W 805's, she seems right in front of you. With the Rocket 750's she seems a little farther back. In my opinion, this is more pleasing to the ear. It gives the midrange a smoother, buttery quality. I love the highs on this speaker. They are defintely a bit laid back. But, I love that! Cymbals through the vifa tweeter always sound musical- never harsh. Moreover, female ess sounds (sibilance) always sound great. The mids on this speaker are also great. Very smooth and light. Buttery, I would say. There is just an overall finesse with this speaker. It does not ever sound like anything is jumping out at you- if that makes any sense. That is what makes the 750's a joy to listen to. Bass is tight and fast via the the 4 aluminum cones. However, these speakers don't really go that low, so you need a sub if you like to hear the low bass. Similar Products Used: B&W 805 Polk Audio RT7 |

Strength:
Very accurate sound reproduction Excelent mid-range quality More bass then I was expecting Incredible wood finish (this is what tipped the scales in my decision to purchase the Onix Rocket RS750's over Axiom's M80 Ti tower)
Weakness:
Not as "bright" as some other speakers (I don't really feal this is a weakness, but most people are use to having "bright" speakers already). I bought these speakers at a discount as these were speakers that were sent out for photographs and review for different magazines and online publishers. Speakers are probably one of the hardest items to write a review about. Describing what something sounds like can not ever truely be done using words for people all give their own slightly different meaning and weight to specific words used. That having been said, I have no words to fully describe the sounds that the Rocket RS750 Signatures produce. They are easily the most accurate speakers I have personally owned and are probably the most accurate ones I have listened to as well. It is hard to describe what it is like to hear for the first time nuances and sounds that "didn't exist" before on CD's that I have listened to hundreds of times before. To be able to pick out individual voices in a piece with a large choir (not only hear those voices but be able to point out there location in the room) is an amazing ability and quality that these speakers will give to you. |

Strength:
-Best speaker Ive ever tested in this price range...bar none. -heavy speaker with quick feet--Others wont keep up and for those that do... its a serious contender--An up and coming heavywieght -QUALITY, QUALITY, QAULITY Vifa tweeter is "grown up" design, revealing only what needs to be revealed" - fit finish is unmatched - Not quite the Nautilus 803's but chewing at their heels
Weakness:
-Small face and grille design limit tweeter on-axis listening. first speaker Ive ever heard limitations from a grille cover. - Slender design, heavy top end could yield to unintentional "spillage" - "grown-up" tweeter isnt as revealing as other designs... not bad, we're just used to listening to overemphasized highs - sensitivity rated at 88db... hmmm! modest rating. - Power hungry!! although 6 Ohms....needs a little more than the average receiver can provide. Seperates even better *** This is for the 750 Classic (non signature)*** -A little about myself to validate my opinions. I consider myself an audioPhile who loves music. I’ve been an audioPhile since I was 14 Yrs Old. Although I couldn’t afford too much back then I began piecing things together to reproduce the sound that makes my soul move. Unfortunately 15 yrs later, I still piece things together to get the sound I deserve! I am an audioPhile on a budget, like most people who venture into this hobby. But because I’m on a budget, it doesn’t mean I have to sacrifice what I love and what moves me. I simply set my own standards, make my own reference points and benchmark what I like. I’ve been on a quest to find a speaker that conforms to my personality as well as my budget. Ive stumbled across many systems to label as good, but only a few to move me to purchase or commit to bringing home. I’ve searched for the better part of 10 yrs to find a speaker that FITS me. My benchmark... the mid range of B&W Nautilus, The quickness of Martin Logan Electrostatics, the softness of Dynaudio, and the imaging of Infinity. With all these things in mind... it was hard to find. I did extensive research online to find something comparable. I found nothing. What I did find was a few people raving about ONIX rockets on a few forums. I began searching high and low for these speakers. When I did find it, I was impressed by the sheer looks. Looks aside, I began to look deeper, finding that this company, [ONIX] made interconnects and speaker cables too. I ventured out for my first ONIX product...the Master series speaker cables. THESE are what honestly gave me goose bumps. My first impression... well will save that for another post. None the less I was extremely impressed as they BLEW away other cables 4x the price in a side by side test. The IC's were next...they yielded the same results and high marks from me. I was immediately sold as I saw this company obviously knew what they were/are doing. Well, I did it, I took my chances with the speakers.. the RS 750's a floor stander with 4 aluminum 5.25 drivers and a soft textile type tweeter. The picture first revealed to me QUICKNESS, mid range/vocal accuracy, and tweeter softness in one package. To make this story short, they didn’t let me down; in fact I was even more impressed when they arrived onsite. From start to finish (unpacking to listening) they were cared for in their packaging AND they were EXTREMELY gorgeous, more than I expected! As far as listening... If you ask if I got close to my listening benchmarks... " If I didn’t hit the Bulls Eye... I Damn sure got close too it". I’m very happy and more than satisfied, with this speaker. As they may not be of reference type, they are certainly Blue-chip performers that will give speakers twice their price a run for their money. Break-in period may be long but well worth the wait. I waited for over ten years for a speaker that sings with emotion and gracefully performance under the strenuous conditions. Truly the best things do come to those who wait. If you have any mental reservation about online audio sales... break out of your paradigm, these speakers will floor you. Can't pull myself away from them to get other things done. These speakers are a real find. The construction and apearance are the best in this price range. This is also the best sounding speaker at twice the price. Vocals are clear and very accurate. I've auditioned many speakers and they all feel short of the Rocket 750's. I like to drink alot of Jack Daniels when listening to music and that is the best way to find flaws with speakers and this speaker has none. Balanced sweet sound HT is amazing
Weakness:
The balanced sound is not for everyone. Sweet speaker. If you like Klipsch, Deftech, or other bright speakers, you may be disappointed. However, if you appreciate a balanced sound that never tires your ears, these may be for you. I have the HT#2 combination, consisting of the 750 signatures for mains, 200 (Bigfoot) center channel, and the dipole 300s as the surrounds. I also have the UFW-10 subwoofer (probably the most amazing speaker of all). My musical taste ranges from classical to jazz to speedmetal. In all genres, I find myself listening to more music than I have since college - a pretty amazing feat given my married with children, old-guy status. For home theater, these speakers really shine. Whether listening at low, moderate, or ear-shattering levels, the speakers remain composed and distortion free. Dialog, mostly through the center channel of course, is crisp and insanely clear. Last but not least, the fit and finish of the Rockets is worthy of fine furniture. Given non-audio factors such as the WAF, that goes a long way toward making these speakers a welcome addition to my home. Since Rockets aren't sold through stores, many folks (including me) may be hesitant to buy them sight unseen (and sound unheard). If you are serious about these speakers, go to www.audioenvy.com and look for someone in your area with Rockets and take a listen. Similar Products Used: Polk, Deftech, Vienna Acoustics |
