These were RADIO SHACKS most affordable high performance rears. Most likely you will have to use stands vs wall brackets as these need to be a foot away from any walls, bookshelves, etc... minimum to "breathe". These have a 5" woofer (should be midrange as there is almost no true base from them) and the famous Linaeum tweeters (dipole) for excellent high transparency. These do seem to be somewhat bright for front use but adequate for rears if properly mounted. The series I, if you can find them, were being cleared for about $49/each (normally $149/each) and definately needs a sub to support them. If space is not a concern get the PRO-LX8s (bookshelf with 8" woofer and same tweeter) instead as they should be the same price (these are discontinued and you most likely will have to ask for an area search) and have a much fuller range. The main things these really excel at are string instruments and most brass instruments (including cymbals) for music and decent for rears in HT setting. I use these in my bedroom setting for rears, pair of PRO-X77s pair for fronts, PRO-CS5 for center (recent upgrade), an AUDIOSOURCE SW8 sub (50W), and two SW-14P passive subs (modified by adding more poly-fil for sound dampening, hooked up from AVR's right front/rear to sub to right front main/rear and mirrored on the left sub to left front main/rear). This could also be used as a center if it is not put inside an enclosure of an entertainment center (i.e. on top of entertainment center is much better) of a small room as the midrange does not spread like the tweeter. In my main room I have the PRO-LX8s for front main/rears and a PRO-CS5 for center as well and the PRO-LX8s are much better. Normally this speaker would only rate a 4 but for the price you can buy this it deserves a 5 if you can give it the proper space to breathe otherwise try to get the PRO-X77 for rears if wall mount is a must.

I refuse to be swayed regarding these speakers, even though *everyone* seems to have an opinion about them. These speakers sound better than the price would indicate, but don't expect miracles. If you listen to the hype and think that $150/pr will buy you some giant-killing fantastic speakers, *it won't*. What it _will_ get you is a nice tweeter, conversation-piece aesthetics, decent build quality, and solid performance in its price range.
The tweeter is nice. I'm sure that's already been established by others here. The midrange is gross. I mean like a naked Newt gross. But for $150/pr, I've heard worse. Whoever decided to space out this speaker's binding posts should be forced to listen to 4-year old female pageant contestants belt out Annie songs all day through them. Grrrrr. That is really annoying. Otherwise, the binding posts are nice considering the price. The cabinet resonates like crazy, too.

With all that said, these speakers really aren't too bad when listened to within their abilities. The tweeter makes for an enticing surround option, if you can put up with this speaker's shortfalls.

The price of this speaker saves its rating from me. 3 minus.

I originally went to the Shack for a few minor hook-ups when I saw The LX-10 on sale for $99 marked down from $250. I bought two and bought a CS-5 Center and 2 LX-5s for the surrounds on clearance at $49.99 each.(The LX-5II's had just come out) After hooking both the LX-10s & the LX-5s up it became apparent that the LX-5s were way to inferior to the LX-10s. The tweeter was nice but the quality of sound was very poor when cranked-up during demanding movie sountracks. I know how all the reviews have raved about them; trust me, if you can still find the LX-10 buy it, they have the same tweeter and 2 larger woofers. A little extra money spent (less than $100 per pair)is well worth it. Dont even consider buying these speakers at full price without first searching for the LX-10. I now have 4 LX-10 towers 1 CS-5 center and the SW200p 200 watt Subwoofer. These are the prices you should pay for each item.
LX-10 $99.00 (rumored to be at $79.00 now from $250.00)
CS-5 $69.00 (On clearance since CS-5II came out from $149.00)
SW200p 200 watt Subwoofer (Frequently on sale at $299.00 from $399.00)
SW100p 100 watt Subwoofer (Frequently on sale at $199.00 from $299.00)(For those who dont need as much bass{NO remote control or 5 way binding posts})
At these prices I think the Shack has the BEST sub $800 home thater system available!!

Getting over buying speakers at Radio Shack

Let's put things in prospective here. These are NOT high end
audio speakers. How can you compare them with high end names? It would be like comparing brass to gold. These speakers are impressive for the sale price. If you are a working man, like myself, you can't go wrong. You do need a subwoofer to go with them.Great speaker for mid and high applications in small to medium listening areas.Once again,
these are not Bose or PSB or Klipch or other brands of that nature. They are Radio Shack speakers.Good speaker,Good price.

for those of you like myself that have a low budget and keep seeking for those bargains, check these out! $150.00pr I bought 4 of them. I also bought the CS511's cntr chnl$99. Now I have matching speakers all around. They do need a sub(a must) jbl 100watt powered sub at costco I got for $99. My home theater speakers were $500.00 and sound great! My wife is happy, Im happy and my wallet is really happy. Of course there are much greater speakers out there but some of us just can afford them. There also those real cheap in the box systems that suck bigtime that cost you the same or more. The LX511's on sale you cannot pass up if you are looking for a good deal-5 year warranty. I can honestly say I enjoy watching my DVD's with these speakers regardless what anybody say's , love them.

Incredible, Resiliant Highs that reproduce the upper frequencies with remarkable accuracy and imaging for an unbeleivable price

Weakness:

What Bass? Oh that fluttering, thats the little ports and the thing they call a driver.

When We purchased these speakers two years ago, I had no idea what I would end up getting into with home audio. Im seventeen from san jose, ca, and my father and i purchased these speakers knowing little about home audio. Now I own a Harmon Kardon AVR30 Amp and their FL8550 rigged with Monster Cables Clean PowerSurge Strip, RCA Interlink 400MKII cables and thier best speaker wire you can by on the spool. And to show my buddies what all these components can do, I have my pair of pro lx-5's. This speaker, whan given proper space and rigged to a proper sub, will give you preformance that literally spankes anything else in, near and at times above their price range. I have a rather interesting setup, I have the pair rigged to two passive Optimus ProSW14 12'' subwoffers, one on the left and one on the right. My neighbor across the street has a pair of PSB Phenox Golds. Knnow nothing about audio equpi? Theyr pretty good. And they cost 3K. My system sounds almost as good as his. There may be no type of midrange or bass emitted from this little guy, but the quality in construction and craftsmanship is awesome, and that tweeter everyone talks about! Id like to meet the guy who made this thing. On the high end, this speaker sounds better than anything iv ever heard or read reviews on in its class. So get over the fact that their from Radio Shack, And go and listen, because its not where you buy them from or who makes them, its how they sound. And in this buisness, that is the only thing that matters.

Strength:

The Dipole tweeter works great with home theater.

Weakness:

The stock crossover. A lot of reviews say the bass is weak, but the speaker only has a 5" woofer! Can you say SUB?

The crossover in this speaker is as simple as they get. A 1mh choke on the woofer and a 6.2 uf capacitor on the tweeter. That's it. Not even a circut board! When compared with my AURA 827's. I noticed the tweeters in the PRO LX5's were working into the high midrange more. My AURAS had a more refined sound. I ordered two MUSICAPS from madisound for 23.00 apiece. I went kind of overboard on these. Madisound also offers BENNIC caps for a lot less. Either of these will really improve the sound over the stock caps. For the values I looked at the crossover in the AURAs and found they crossed over the highs with a 4.0 uf cap. So, in my really unscientific way I ordered two 5.0 uf musicaps,It worked. a simple fix. Try a 5.5uf or just replace the 6.2uf with a better quality cap. Then you can hear your friend's ACOUSTIMASS system and say "You paid how much?"

I have owned a pair of these speakers for over a year now, and find them quite reasonable for the price, when on special, that is.
I didnt find the tweeter harsh at all, rather, I found it to be too dull and lifeless compared with a decent dome tweeter. I found vocals and guitar to be too muffled and rather unimpressive. The mid is compromised for extra bass response, that of which the 5" woofer/mid would struggle with anyway. It seems they have tried to design the speaker more as a full-range speaker than a dedicated satellite speaker. I found that by blocking the ports, the mid-bass is somewhat "tightened" and brings back some of the higher mid that is lost. These speakers sound really good when used with an appropriate sub, and can have a reasonably high power handling when crossed over properly..

I use a 12db/oct 100hz x-over, which seems to do an adequate job, and lets the LX5's do what they do best - which isnt sub 100hz bass!

I think for the price, these are quite good units, but they just dont offer the sound i'm after.

The spaciousness of the sound makes these little wonders fantastic for home theatre. What amazes me is that they can almost keep up with my sunfire true subwoofer, not quite. I wouldn't even think of using them alone, they need their bass augmented, about 1/4 of the piano's range is below their lowest usable output. But, and this is significant, everything over that point (100 Hz maybe) is very clean and loud enough for most uses. It was kinda funny listening to them without the sub, gut pounding drums turned into little thuds...but that's about all they lack.
I was really surprised when I first connected them, they produce a lot of sound. They may not produce a lot of loud sound, but they do really project. They can almost rock, but they do jazz, classical, new age, dance, etc. quite well. Somehow when the rock is really kicked up, they fall apart (I'm talking about them along with a subwoofer). I haven't been able to put my finger on what goes wrong, but something is wrong with the sound, could even be my crossover point or orientation of the sunfire, but it is only for that reason I've given them four stars. Otherwise for their quality at the price, they are five stars. There are a lot of better speakers available, none close to $150 a pair and few as spacious and musical in such a little space.

Bravo Radio Shack!

I originally purchased a pair of these units ( named Genexxa Pro LX5 in UK ) for use as TV satellites. I was so impressed with their superior treble dispersion qualities, which results in excellent imaging, that I decided to dispose of my transmission line monitors and develop the LX5's for main speaker use. They definitely need to be used with some form of bass unit - I tried various sub-woofer combinations/locations before I arrived at the following setup. Each LX5 sits on a 3ft. high enclosure which contains a floor-facing bass speaker ( Peerless 220 WR ). The sides of the enclosure are tapered from the base to the top so that the width matches the dimensions of the LX5. The enclosure is ported with the mouth of the port also firing into the floor( same as the speaker ). The signal to each bass enclosure is fed from a separate stereo amp ( Rogers ) which in turn receives its signal from an active low-pass filter fed from the main stereo amp ( Audiolab 800A ). The low-pass filter is a standard fourth order circuit (non-inverting) with a room optimised cutoff frequency of 48HZ, sloping off at 24db/octave.The bass speakers are connected in anti-phase to the LX5's since its's the reflex ports that supply the sub-bass.The LX5's are a bargain, it's such a pity that Tandy shops in the UK have no dem room facilities - but then I suppose that if they did the speakers would be priced accordingly. At the moment ther're on promotion in the UK at £49.99 each until 20th. July. I suggest that you sprint, don't walk, to your nearest branch to get the biggest steal in hi-fi for years, short of throwing a brick through an audio store window!
