I just dug my dad's old stereo out of the attic, and was amzed that a system over 20 years old can still perform. The HPM-100's which are hooked to an equally ancient Pioneer receiver, offer some pretty terrible sound quality. They don't hit low enough or hard enough, and the highs are rather piercing. Imagery and clarity are nonexistent. But the midrange is strong and very very loud. I can't even have the receiver on without someone in the house complaining. Although they don't have the sound quality you can get from newer more expensive speakers, the HPM's have lasted twice as long as most cars and will fill just about any size room or house with booming sound. |

Strength:
about the best you could buy 20years ago. Surr.Cone of Woof. made of paper does not deterierate like some rubber surround cones.
Weakness:
They are big and should be played off the ground on some support. I helped my friend by some speakers in the early 1980s. The 100s were among a group we compared in the same store. There was no comparison to the fine sound these speakers delivered. I possess certain knowledge that I did not have at that time about speakers today so on the basis of speakers today I cannot give a definitive current rating though I believe it would still be high. My friend has not used them in awhile but plans to use them again in the near future. They are finicky as to what amp or receiver is put on them in delivering their potential sound quality. Similar Products Used: there is no real similar product due to its 4 way asymetrical design. DISREGARD THE PRODUCT YEAR ABOVE OF 1995. These were made in the very early 1980s/ |

Part of my orginal stereo purchase my HPM 100's are well over twenty years old and still work well. In their(and my) younger years rock & roll blasted through those speakers constantly. They do have problems though with my new receiver. With the JVC RX774, in surround sound mode there is very often a strange almost crackling sound when high mid range sounds are produced. I tried out a set of BOSE Acoustimass 700 speakers and they don't have the crackle in them so the receiver is ok, but over all the HPM 100's sound much better producing stereo music, so the Bose are going back to the store. I think a set of JBL SCS125's are in my future, but if they don't beat the HPM 100's they will go back to the store too. Similar Products Used: Cervin Vega CV-12, Bose Acoustimass 700 |

Strength:
Nice powerful and crisp sound, great deep bass, endurance, carefully crafted
Weakness:
Weight ;) , a litle bit enhanced midranges but they are adjustable, (highs adjustable too), with a built in potenciometer. I was 20 years old when I got them, now I am 40 they still sound superb, perhaps yo do not get the sound definition specially in bass, but if you think about the technologie available 20 years ago !!! Pioneer produced a very nice product. Now I recentlly bought a pair of B&W 640-S2 for my Dolby - Home theater processor, I have compared them and guys .... they have nothing to envy to the new ones. Strength:
Great sound and (in the plexiglass version) a real conversation item.
Weakness:
Heavy, heavy, heavy. You think the wood ones are heavy? Try 1/2 inch plexiglass. I would guess these are the rarest of HPM-100's: clear plexiglass working demo models that were only available to dealers. The sound is as described in the reviews below - bright with a kickin' bass (though I would love to compare mine against a wood cabinet pair - obviously, there's no damping material inside the cases). |

Their made in the 70's. What more needs said?
Weakness:
Hard to find for a resonable price. I don't own a pair but a couple of firends have pairs and every time I hear these speakers I fall in love with them. I start literally obsessing with them. Their sound just completly brings the experience of listening to music to an all time pinacle. I will get these speakers. Ohh yes, they will be mine. Even if it breaks me. Strength:
Their biggest strength is that they are the best sounding speakers I've ever heard. In every way. Period. They never distort anything - if you keep throwing on the power, they'll either blow or keep cranking it clearly. Mine haven't blown yet...
Weakness:
Nothing. Some of the old stuff, like receivers, amps, etc..., from back when these were made (late seventies) were pretty ugly looking, but these would look great in a showroom today. I have the following speakers: Similar Products Used: Infinity SM112 (12" Woofers) & SM150(15" Woofers) |
