Strength:

Smooth, very smooth. Can play very loud.

Weakness:

Big speakers. May not fit into bookshelves.

If Consumer Reports (CR) reported that the best car they tested last year is a BMW530, which it is, and it is in your price range, would you buy it? OK. If CR said that the Pioneer SDF3K are the best bookshelve speakers they tested last year, and they are in your price range, would you buy them? I would and that what I did. Unseen out of the box, these speakers sounded very neutral, smooth and uncolor. I have owned many speaker in the last 15 years, two pairs of Linn-very expensive speakers, two pairs of Magnaplanar (MMG and 1.6QR), KEFs, Boston Acoustics, Yamaha NS10 monitor, Mission 773, not to mention several subwoofers and listened to several very expensive speakers above $5K a pair or so. What I have learned is that speakers don''t move you. Music moves you. When the speakers play with acurracy at moderate level, uncolor, smooth and neutral, you got the right ones. Further many of more expensive speakers have better cabinets, made out of expensive woods but not necessarily sound better. I also found that finding a honest opion in the field of speakers are often hard to find. Stereophile is corrupted and bias. Go and pick up a pairs of $300 speaker wire recommended by stereophile and compare them with $10-60 foot Radio Shack and see if they are any different. It''s all hype! CR is the only people that I could trust because they have a reputation to telling the true story of the products. So do yourself a favor and buy these speakers, you will not be disappointed.

Strength:

Low, Mid, and Highs these speakers do it all well

Weakness:

Tad large, until I look at the behemoth that is my sub

I purchased these speakers sight unseen for my dorm. At first, I tested out some speakers around town and wasn’t really impressed with anything I could afford (about $350). I read the review in CR and decided what the hell, and ordered them for $200 including shipping. Let me attest that these speakers are very good. Don’t let their low price deter you. Pioneer must just be able to produce a better product for less money than all the other manufacturers in the CR article. The 8” drivers really can produce a lot of bass. Sadly, I didn’t expect them to have as good of bass response as they did, so before they arrived at my door I bought an excessively large sub (PW-2500). Using the sub and the speakers together is amazing but the sub has way too much power, so most of the time I just use the Pioneers. If you are looking for great bookshelf speakers, regardless of how much you want to spend, audition these before you buy anything else. These speakers were top dog in two CR bookshelf shootouts, that’s impressive.

These handle the entire spectrum well.

Between positive reviews from both Consumer Reports and Audioreview.com, I thought I''d give these a try. I couldn''t be more pleased with the value and performance of these speakers.

Strength:

great sound, great design, and great value

Weakness:

An 8" driver sounds slightly harsh after watching Pearl Harbor DVD very loud :-)

I trusted Consumer review on this one (see pasted below). I was not disappointed. Amazing sound quality. Treble is not excessively strong (unlike JBL's titanium tweeter) and very precize. Bass OK (goes down to 45Hz by book), I use a subwoofer for realy deep bass. It is surprizing to see the quality of midrange from this 2-way unit. If you combine this with Pioneer's center 3-way ISO speaker (outstanding!), ISO surround ones (not bad, but SDF3Kx4 would be better, if you had room for them), and a sub (I opted for Sony 12" WM40) you get a very solid but inexpensive home theatre system.
Pioneer gives 5-year warranty, so I will fix the defective driver soon (a minor thing, only audible with strong bass, which usually get routed to a sub).
Even my wife likes the looks of these big bookshelf speakers on stands.

Consumer Reports:
" BOOKSHELF MODELS
1. Pioneer S-DF3-K
Excellent; among the best for playing bass-heavy music very loud. Best placed 54 in. from side wall, 12 in. from back. 18 lb. each. May be too deep and too tall for typical shelf.

Audio notes: Very smooth."

Strength:

VERY Low price for entry Audiophile. Great sound for the price, good power handling, good bass handling, well built for cheap bookshelf speaker

Weakness:

It is big for a bookshelf. The midbass is a tad exagerated and upper mids are a little weak.

I bought my younger brother a entry audio system for christmas. Onkyo 8211 receiver, Pioneer sdf3k speakers and standesign bb-75 speaker stands for a total of $420 with shipping. I dare you to find a better NEW system for less money!!!

so the review of Pioneer SDF3k
good accuracy - a little strong on the mid bass and a little weak on the upper midrange.
Very smooth - across the audio range the transistion to higher notes is effortless
Very good power handling - will maintain even sound up to about 75W very good for a bookshelf.
Good bass - this is a large box but it is still a bookshelf so for a bookshelf the bass is excelent.

By the way the pioneer sdf3k is very good if you want a smaller box and only $115 a pair...wow. I am very happy that the audiophile qualities are starting to drip in to the common products market.

B+W 601 s2 - still have them and love them but they cost more $400 pr
BIC dv62si - great speaker for $125 pair but weaker in bass
PSB 2B - great speaker for about $300 pair

So if you want a cheap speaker for your kids or garage the sdf3k is a great choice.
(I give it 5 stars for the price range)

Strength:

Superb sound, 5 way binding posts, beautify cabinet finish;all at a great price.

Weakness:

They are quite heavy for bookshelve speakers but that doesn't limit the quality of the sound.

I use these babies in my dorm room and they sound great. The bass is deep and they maintain their cool at high volume.Just the other day I was playing them loud and a guy who leaves in the next dorm to me came in and asked me to turn down my subwoofer! The thing is, I don't have a suwoofer yet.The bass on this speakers is that good.I am totaly happy with this speakers.

Strength:

great sound, bass response, good quality.

Weakness:

a little big for bookshelves, but they do have 8" woofers.

I searched for decent bookshelves at a moderate price to go along with my Onkyo 595, Klipsch SC1 center and Klipsch surrounds (older speakers someone gave me when they moved). I needed bookshelves due to my livingroom set-up. I looked at the Klipsch SB3 because I wanted nothing less than an 8" woofer and something to compliment my other Klipsch components, I also didn't want to spend money on a subwoofer. A friend of mine who works for Pioneer let me try these out but I researched them as they received excellent reviews in Consumer Reports (but then again, so did Bose). These speakers aren't bad, in fact, they are pretty darn good! The bass is there, the midrange is impressive as well. As they are bookshleves, they don't shake the ground but you can "feel" the bass. I would definitely recommned these to anyone looking for a good speaker at a moderate cost. I also highly recommend the Onkyo 595, it kicks ass!
