I bought these used from a dealer that used to carry Platinum Audio. The dealer claimed that no other mini monitor around the price point comes close and that when Platinum Audi went out of business they where unable to find a real replacement. I auditioned them with a McIntosh MA6600 and they sounded amazing. With my rather mixed bag of equipment they sound really good and with every upgrade I make they are getting closer and closer the MA6600 level I know they can reach. The things that stand out is their realistic sound stage and clarity. Currently I have a Yahmaha M40 (the weak link right now), Rouge six-sixty pre-amp, Lehmann Audio Black Cube phono stage, and Project-debut III TT. I was able to purchase a pair of factory stands as well which really aid to the speakers bass extension. Speaking of bass for their size they produce a punchy bass and detailed bass that is more realistic then any speaker I’ve owned.

The Platinum Audio Studio One are simply the best speakers in this price range and
to be honest with you folks, there's no need to spend more on the already famous Solo's. The Studio One are almost identical in everything but for less money. I got this pair for "free" when we closed our High End Audio store years ago and we got these two in a trade-in. The construction of the cabinet and the veneer applied to mine's (black) are not that good and does not compare to the sound of these little fellows. The soundstage is amazingly big, the highs are transparent and the mids are very revealing depending on the recording used. Many people are amazed by the bass produced by its little drivers but for me is not that "super bass" everybody seems to rave about. Just a tight natural bass, perhaps a little bit better than other speakers of its size but not a super bass as many people says. I would use it with a very good sub, alas the old Janis or something similar, and of course; with a powerful amp over 150 watts at least. My Golden Tube SE-100 with the new Tesla's EL 34 and all its high current, can't simply satisfy these inneficient pieces. No way, José! You need something big, like my reference Fourier Panthers at 200w/pc. That's when the thing start to get interesting. My pre amp, a Mystery One from Unison Research is very neutral and unforgiving. These Studio One could match with ancillary equipment costing 5 times more that itself and would not dissapoint anybody. Would I live with them for the rest of my life? Perhaps, but only with more profound bass from a sub-woofer. Even though, I just replaced my reference Mastering Monitors, Tannoy 15 System II ($6,000) with the Studio One simply because there's no fatigue with the little fellows. I'm using it with the Platinum Stands that are much better than many more expensive ones around. It's a shame that the death of the glory days of the High End came to an abrupt end and many companies like Platinum Audio, Paragon Speakers, etc ... passed away in mysery: for them and for audiophiles like us!

This review is for the Platinum Studio 3's. Slinline, floorstanding tower with two 5s" and a tweet, rear ported. I bought these used off of a couple on ebay who felt that, although they loved em, they were too big for their Lower East Side Apartment. I picked these up for a price I couldn't resist. I had used some PT-801s in my bedroom Home Theatre and thought that if these were half as good I'd be happy. Am I happy, yes and no. The fit and finish of the speaker are fine if you don't mind the industrial flat black color of it all. The cabinets are heavy and well built. The speakers come bi-wirable but I built some jumpers and am running them straight. As for how they sound. They've a wide and detailed "sweet spot" that was dialed in with minimal set up. Decent mids and bass for a speaker running dual 5-inch drivers. When combined with my Onkyo 898 Receiver I find that the treble range is extremely "bright" I may have to really dial back the highs on these puppies. The sound is currently a little ear fatiguing and lacks the suble smoothness I like in my main speakers. The bottom line is I'll use them for a while but I'll probably sell them or use them in someone else's HT unless I can get them too my liking. Slim profile and design does have a high Wife Acceptance Factor however.

i presently own both the platinum studio one and the platinum solo.these speakers are almost identical.(the solos are three times the price as the studio) i originally bought the studios for parts for the solos. when i listened to them i could not believe how accurate and musical they are. theres no way i would ever take this speaker apart if something ever happened to my solos. i would just switch them. of course running a 60 watt tube amp,im not doing either speaker justice. they are inefficient, but they easily handle anything i can throw at them.these speakers want to be played very loud. the midrange with my tubes is unbelievable. i would reccomend this speaker to anyone.for the price , i never would have bought the more expensive solos, if i knew the quality of these. if anyone is interested in these mint condition , true grit black finish speakers, email me. it kills me to keep them in my closet. i believe the used rate is between 350 and 400. if you are already purchasing these you will not be sorry. this may be the best deal in the high end market. this has all the features of the solos. for a fraction of the price.

I've been in the market for new speakers and listened to a few different ones. My final 3 picks for my price range were the B&W 603, Paradigm Studio 60's and Platinum Audio Studio 1's. I listened to the B&W first then the Paradigm and that basically got rid of the B&W's. THEN, I listened to the Platinum's and IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! They are the most amazingly beautiful sounding speaker I've heard to date. So crisp, clear and articulate, with plenty of accurate bass to add. I'm telling you, if you've not heard them yet. Hear them! I'm positive you'll be astounded!

I auditioned these speakers last week and was very impressed with them. Their build is wonderful and the sound is stunningly accurate with remarkable bass response. I originally was there to audition the Cambridge Audio cd4se (a great piece and a definate future purchase)and asked to listen to the Platinum Audio speakers. This is a little company that manufactures audiophile speakers right here in America. The New Hampshire factory produces one of the finest products that I have heard in this price range, period. Doug Russell, one of the few reps for this product in New York City as well as Cambridge Audio who took the time to fully demonstrate the dynamic range of these speakers. They are not terribly efficient, but if one has the power to drive them, they are glorious. I played Chopin Nocturnes and it was as if the piano was in the room with us. This also was the same with a jazz cd I use to audition equipment. The detail and transparancy are simply amazing. For any New Yorkers wishing to listen to one of what I believe is the most musical speaker that I have heard, you may e-mail me and I will put you in contact with Mr. Russell at Custom Audio.
