Strength:
Great balanced sound with low bass extension, and very good imaging. Hard to find a better all-around speaker.
Weakness:
None that I am aware of. I read the comments about the blown tweeters... stick a fastblow 1/8A fuse in series with the tweeter, it won't happen again. I haven't found that necessary, but the former owner of mine might have. I'm so glad I found these speakers. They have become my favorite full-range speakers (no subwoofer required) and I use them in my most critical listening environment: my bedroom. I use these with an Audio Alchemy DLC preamp, a David Marchand amp, and whichever CD I have hooked up just now, although the configuration changes frequently (but never the speakers). They provide the precise imaging that most older speakers never could, with true bass capability that belies their modest size (keep in mind I have big Altec horn cabinets). Very detailed sound that lets you hear every instrument individually. If you have ever read Speaker Builder magazine, you'll know that these are an old-time favorite tweaker's speaker. There have been a number of mods to these suggested over the years; one was to wire one of the pair of midrange drivers with out of phase opposite channel, like the big flagship Polk SDA's do. I thought about trying it, but there is just no need. I think their imaging is already among the best available. As a guitarist, I really like listening to guitar music on these, but these are highly recommended no matter what kind of music you listen to. Similar Products Used: Oh man, lots of speakers: right now I have Altec Model 14 and Model 15 Monitors, modified Advent Ones, Optimus LX-5 (don't laugh - hear them for yourself), BES Planars, others. |

Strength:
Imaging, Midrange, soaring highs from that silver wound tweeter.
Weakness:
The low bass can get a little muddy I bought my 10B monitors new in 1986. I actually fell in lustful love with the SDA-1. The store manager sat me down in front of the SDA with Pink Floyds The Wall, and well I've never had another experience like that in my life. The goosebumps almost popped out of my skin. Anyway when I returned to reality the 5000.00 price tag was too much for my 19 year old salary. So I bought the 10B monitors. The were no SDA's but they were wonderful for the 600.00 price tag. They do wonderful natural imaging, the high that the pure silver wound tweeter puts out is soaring and effortless. After 14 years I finally broke down and upgraded my Yamaha R-7 70w receiver I bought at the same time. With all the digital advances in receivers it was time. Got the Yamaha rx-v795A. Some of the newer modern speakers do come across a tad crisper, but when I hooked the Yamaha up to my Polk 10B as front, 5jr as rear, and added a Polk cs-175 center, it was clear that I had no need to replace this classic monitor. Polk 10B, yeah, they do that, and after 14 years. The muddines is not highly pronounced, and really is only a factor at very low and complex productions. But listen to a jazz bass solo, and it punces you just right. A wonderful speaker, and it does my heart good to see I'm not the only one still enjoying what may well be the cleanest, best imaging speaker ever made in the price range. Matthew Polk, please go back to the future. Similar Products Used: Klipsch |

Strength:
Great soundstage, detail, neutral sound
Weakness:
None These is great sounding speakers for the money. They are very revealing with a full, deep soundstage for the music. Too bad Polk doesn't make such quality soundings speakers anymore today! I am amazed at how they compare to many current speakers at even twice the original Polk price. A classic speaker design! Similar Products Used: KEF, B&W |
