I just purchased a set of these speakers, and paid $399 Canuckbucks (or $299US). For the price, there's no speaker that even comes close to them. I now have them connected to a digital amp (JVC RX-884V) with a DVD player, and the sound is extremely crisp and precise. They will deliver quite excellent bass response at moderate volumes, but at higher volumes, most would want to consider a subwoofer as a good partner for these speakers.

Strength:

Looks, size, sounds, price

Weakness:

They are a bit tall but I like that look.

Excellent! These speakers will be MORE than enough for the casual listner. I compared them to Infinity, Bose, DCM, and Yamaha and no one could touch these...regardless of price. I don't even think you would need the higher end Polk's unless you're REALLY REALLY picky. I paid $350 for the pair and I could not be more happy with them. My system is the Onkyo 575, Polk RTi15's as my surround speakers, Polk SW350 Sub (that thing freaking POUNDS), RT400's and the CSi175 center channgel. MORE than enough for me for about $1300.

This is one great set of speakers, I paired the to a PSW650 and they sound incredible, Josh below me says they have little bass, well of course they do, it's only a 7 inch woofer (not an 8 Inch) but they get the job done, and they do what any pair of $400 speakers should and they do it in the nicest possible way.

Weakness:

Bass isn't as tight and accurate as the really expensive, so-called audiophile speakers.

Well, after assembling a decent mid range system over a period of many years, one of my power amps fried. I went out and purchased a Sony A/V receiver. After tolerating it as a "Home Theater" for a couple of years, and basically giving up music listening, I longed for that soundfield again. I purchased another power amp to use in my system. My equipment is:
Main Amp: Threshold/Forte' Model 3
Secondary Amp: Adcom GFA-2
Surround AMp: Sony TA-N110 (soon to be replaced)
A/V Preamp: Yamaha AVC-70
CD Player: Yamaha CDX 1030
Cassette: Yamaha KX-530
Turntable: Top of the line Technics
Main Speakers: Home Brew (12" woofer, 8" horn mid, 2" tweeter), , and Polk Audio RT-400.
Rear Speakers: Ultralinear 450 (rebuilt with Pyle 10", Pyle 10" Passive radiator, Philips ultra high frequency ring radiator)
I replaced the Ultralinears with the Polks, and started hearing much better mid range clarity. Although, bass was powerful and tight with the Ultralinears, the Polks (although not as powerful a bass) contribute far more musicality, definition and accuracy. Together with the home brews, they sound so much "livelier". They present an incredible sound stage, with powerful lows, captivating mids, and clean and clear highs. At super high volume, however, they have a tendency to become overbright. Some recordings have a tendency to be overbright already, and together, the "rip your face off" unpleasantness becomes rapidly apparent. At moderate to loud listening levels, they are accurate and spacious. With eyes closed, rythym guitar, lead guitar, drums, keyboards, tambourine, cowbell, vocals, horns all take their appropriate places. You can hear musicians taking breaths, fingers and picks sliding across strings, coughs, throat clearing, toes tapping on the stage even! I would have to say, that driven by price (I got floor models for $49.97 each), I was very very surprised at the audio quality of these fine speakers. And, they're not bad to look at either. I have some DB Dynamics 26610 coming (10" ported side firing woofer, dual 6.5" mids, 1" silk dome tweeter) in from Austrailia, and a powered Sub-woofer. It will be interesting to see how the Polks will compare.

Just picked a pair up for 399(200 off), and the sound quality is excellent, not very low end bass, only an 8" woofer, but I have my sub for that, excellent home theater speaker, due to the excellent high's and crisp bass.

Strength:

Very nice looking, performance.

I use these as my surrounds and they are stellar! They have been able to blend extremely well with the various fronts I have previewed in my home. Highly responsive, extremely detailed and musical. Did I mention bass? For their size, they emit an amazing amount of tight, melodical bass. I used these shortly as my fronts between tryouts of others and I have to say I was AMAZED! These little puppies put out an incredible amount of sound. They are VERY exquisite looking and compliment the look I was going for. They blend exceptionally well, both audibly and visually with the $2,100 Tannoy S10's I ended up getting for my fronts. I could not be happier with these speakers. I got them on sale for $350 but would have been just as happy had I paid $800-$100 for them. Way to go Polk!

I bought these pair of speakers about two months ago and they sound extremely good! they produce a very crystal clear sound with a decent amount of bass considering that they're only a midrange and tweeter; I liked these speakers a lot because they sound great and don't have too much bass because I bought a sub woofer box just for the bass; I bought these at the show room in a very high class audio store and picked these over all the other brands ie Infinity, McIntosh, Boston Acoustics, Bose, Cerwin Vega due to the price and sound.

Strength:

Clear highs with plenty of bass

Weakness:

none so far

I had these beauties for about 10 months and have had nothing but pleasure out of using them. For movies, with the compliment of my sub, it is superb! As for music, no complaints so far. Compared to the sony MF315, the quality and sound is more crisp (not to put Sony down, they are pretty decent for the money). For the price I got nearly a year ago ($360/pair), it hasn't let me down. I have listened to the R40 and this discontinued model has more punch to them. If you ever consider buying some speakers that is not too outrageously expensive but yet not too cheaply put together like KLH's, I highly recommend Polk Audio. It's a brand you can trust when it comes to quality sound. I consider Polk to be one of the better if not top speakers out there.
System: Pioneer Receiver 509S, Pioneer DVD 525, and Infinity sub.

when we walked into the good guys we went to go listen to
powered home subs and in the same room he had a klipsch 10
and a set of these RT400 also playing music and I am like man what are these?and he said they are polk speakers and they are clerenced and so I pulled of one of the grills and I noticed that they had a broken peg and so I said what type of deal would you give me and I got them for 220 dollars
a pair I took them home and we watched the matrix and they just rocked like no other for the price I have heard lots of speakers and these are awesome. For the price and they also gave me a 7 yr warr. plus the 5 yr polk warr. because they are the floor model and with my polk center and polk surrounds and my dvd and 5.1 digital denon it is awesome

Strength:

Solid Construction, tight, precise bass, and brilliant mids and highs, 5 year warranty!!

Weakness:

None

These are really great sounding speakers, much better than comparable and even higher priced models. Middle and high frequencies are produced crisply and accurately. Low tones and tight, precise, and potent. You may need to compliment a pair of these with a powered subwoofer if you MUST have thunderous lows (below 80Hz), otherwise the bass response of the RT-400s is excellent considering the "small" woofer. The construction of these speakers is very solid, including rubber around the woofer instead of foam. These speakers are around $300 a pair and come with a 5 year warranty. I got mine at Circuit City after listening to 5 other makes/models.
