Strength:

I bought these speakers for home theater before it was fashionable. They offer terrific reproduction of film soundtracks and when paired with two Velodyne ULD-15's the sound levels make me giggle.

Weakness:

If you can find a pair of these speakers and do not mind the space they occupy, give them a try. You cannot beat these used for around $2000.00.

I don't know what is more enjoyable, listening to these speaks or cranking them. Then again, I do noy keep gear very long, but as I spend more time with these I will post both the good and bad.

Strength:

Incredible realistic sound in both stereo and home theater modes

Weakness:

To fully appreciate these speakers you need a large room

These are by far the best speakers that I have ever owned. I think that one could spend several times their price and fail to obtain the same sonic experience. Unfortunately my wife is on me to sell them because of their size (64 inches by 17" by 12" (approx.), 185 lbs apiece). They are in like-new condition finished in Oak and I am asking $2,000 for the pair (with the original packaging). Those interested may contact me at kjsmith@ssu.edu.

A to Z

Weakness:

none sonically, bad rap from some audiophiles who are lucky enough to know everything

These are fantastic speakers. I actually own the 2.3tl and am the original owner for about 11 years. I have a system around them consisting of Meridian, CJ, Classe, and MIT. Every upgrade I have made have taken the Polks to an unbelieveable level. I can't say how may retailers have told me I should dump the Polks. I bought into it when I was a less seasoned audiophile and auditioned speakers mentioned above. I never switched because they could not outperform the Polks. Some were excellent, like the Polks, but not better and in some cases not even close. You should experiment with room placement a great deal. The manual does not recommend toe in but I have found it to improve imaging even more and make the presentation even smoother.

PERFECT SOUND DEFINITION

LARGE CABINETS

A VERY GOOD SET OF SPEAKERS FOR ANYBODY THAT REQUIRES QUALITY FROM THIER SYSTEM. WILL HANDLE 1000 WATTS PER CHANNEL WHEN BRIDGED. I WAS RUNNING CARVER TFM-45 AMPS BRIDGED AT 1000 WATTS EACH. YOU CANT HELP BUT TURN IT UP BECAUSE IT SOUNDS SO GOOD. BE CAREFULL NOT TO PISS OFF ANY NEIGHBORS. ITS EASY TO DO.

Jeff Gostam says their not "cool"

For Jeff Gostam:

I would like to start off by saying - your audio snobbery is surpassed only by your obvious insecurity! I don't buy audio equipment because some "expert" tells me that I should think that it sounds good. I buy audio equipment because I know it sounds good! Furthermore, very few owners of these speaker systems paid anything close to retail. Finally, I'm glad that you value your opinion as much as you obviously do - that makes ONE of us!

I also bought my Polks in 1990, but '95 is as far back as this crazy list box will allow me to go.

Strength:

Smooth highs earthshaking but not boomy bass, midrange right
there in front of you.

Weakness:

none

I didn't sleep at all last night, and have been shedding tears practically all day today. My SRS 1.2TL which by the way match or surpass any other speaker in it's
price range on the market just lost sound in the four tweeters in one of the speakers. Here I have a set of speakers that have filled my 26x13 room for years with the most angelic sounds possible outside of the concert hall and all I can do is look at them. Oh you big beautiful things. I checked as best I could all the tweeters and the plug-in connections inside the cabinets. Anyone out there have this problem if so what was your solution? These polks are unbeatable,so I certainly do not want to change. HELP.
can you give six stars? five and a half? OK give five.

Beauty with an Elegant detail for Music.

Weakness:

A little more Bass would make even Subwoofers envious

I now have 3 separate Home Theater systems in my home and my favorite is my Classic Prologic System using my NEC AV-360
Processor, Sony SL-HF900 HiFi Beta and Polk Audio SDA SRS Speakers for mains. I'm so impressed with the quality of sound that I'm searching for a pair of Polk Audio SDA CRS Speakers for the rears. Video can break down a pair of speakers if they can't handle the dramatic changes that voice and effects can deliver but my Polks even though they're over 12 yrs old can hang in there with the best of them. Spacious headroom with crisp highs and strong bass make these speakers a great Audio as well as Video Speaker.

Strength:

Everything!! Bass, smooth highs, clear mids you name it!

Weakness:

Maybe just the Polk stigma but do not believe it, at least not of the SDA SRS.

As you can see I have owned many great speakers, and to
say I'm thrilled with the Polks would be an understatment!
I have the SC-IV's right here in my living room for direct
A-B compairing. I love the Dunlavy's and was selling them
only because I have spent so much money already on my
equipment and figured I would use the Polks for awhile
and get a little money back for Christmas, and then buy something a little later. Well the "somthing" is here,
I bought these from Audiogon for a great deal and now that
I have been listining to them for awhile I would be happy
to pay 5 times as much because they out perform anything
I have heard up to 7k if not more. Just heard the Martin
Logan Prodigy's and still like these better.
What was suprising was how much they sounded like the
the dunlavy's but only richer sounding, not muddy but
a more full sound. The highs are more detailed and not
quite as hard and vocals are warm but not overly. Bass
is full & tight, never boomy...neither was the Dun's but
there is just more there.
They can play louder than the SC-IV's without strain,
and sound better at very low volume.

Bottom line is, if you can find a pair of these buy them!
Do not let anyone fool you into thinking these are of
Bose quality. Polk may be now, but was not back then.

Bargain of the century for $2k

Strength:

Outstanding sound, effortless imaging, ability to reproduce the faintest sounds clearly and at the same time deliver earth shattering bass, very beautiful to look at

Weakness:

no longer in production

These speakers were delivered to me from Polk in Baltimore in Sept 1988 and have performed flawlessly since. Their ability to reproduce sound so clearly regardless of loudness is the mark of a truly high quality product. I agree with one of the previous reviews about toeing in slightly - it does help imaging. Unfortunately, I have these speakers in a relatively acoustically "dead" room and they still perform like champs. My Carver amp had 375 wpc/8 ohms and cannot fatigue these great speakers in the least - my ears give out long before the Polks do.
