If you happen to demo proacs and they sound inconsistent with the general opinion or just sound bad, they MAY need more break in. They do take forever to break in. Can sound a little too vivid and spectacular at times. This can wear on you. Other times they will just amaze and transport you to the event. Spooky. So, the 1sc is not for everyone, nor is it the average speaker. Definitely worth auditioning or owning at some point. I had them for about a year and still miss them sometimes.

Strength:

Hairraising vividness spatially and dynamically, transparent, sweet and listenable, not bad looking

Weakness:

Can demand some effort and sacrifice from the owner before they reveal their secrets

It's certainly true that these speakers can sound anemic and devoid of stature. I know - I've stowed them away in the attic myself several times excactly for that reason. But now they see the light of day again due to some things I have learnt over the years: a) the tweeter must be slightly above your ear when listening. This means that in many situations, standard 60 cm. (24") stands are totally inappropriate. If this is not right, nothing can help you b) the speakers are very sensitive to the stands being employed. High mass is not necessarily helpful. Experiment! c) the speakers offer no help in covering up problems elsewhere in the signal chain. In my case other speakers sounded better at times simply because they compensated for deficient earthing for my preamp.

Strength:

Wide soundstage, good mids and highs

Weakness:

for a 2k $ pair you must get a decent bass. Response 1 sc doesn't deliver it, sorry.

Went to check these out after having listened to Proac Tablette Reference 8. The Reference 8 (and its signature-version) really impressed me, so I was thrilled and my expectations were really high. What a disappointment the Response 1 SC was! While the soundstage was awesome, the bass lacked all authority. The bass was such a poor show that it outweighed all the strenghts. After a while it was clear that I should not waste my time anymore. Now dont get me wrong: Im not demanding anything extraordinary, that is not the same from mounted speakers as from big floorstanders. All Im asking is bass that performs as you would expect from 2 k $ speakers. As one reviewer put it, the speaker lacks majesty. Of course, it may have been just a bad combo. The amp was Musical Fidelity's A3.2, so the speakers werent driven by some crap sony.

Strength:

Remarkable soundstage. High quality construction and components. Small enough to make partner happy. Beautiful timber. Spectacular sound production.

Weakness:

Are you kidding?!

Absolutely intercoursing brilliant! Nothing but high quality from bonding posts to construction to timber finish (rose wood) to timbre finish. Soundstage is so wide that both my wife & I thought that one speaker wasn't working - the source disappears completely. My previous Bose AM5 (bought in 1989) are no competition. They are plugged in with US$5.00 worth of cable (couldn;t wait for my Kimber order to arrive!) and sit on JBL speaker stands without damping or ballast and still reveal so much. I had to listen to 4 CDs in a row as soon as I plugged them in - they bring out the true intent of the recording: The Cure's Faith album, old as it is, shows a tighter bass, Sinead O'Connor's acustic guitar on Black Boys on Mopeds is crystal clear and alive in my living room. The 1SCs work very well with my Creek 5350SE - a great combination. Even TV with VCR tapes takes on a whole new meaning. Spectacular piece of technology. I need a cigarette!

Bose AM5 - because I was young and they were a bargain price. Listened to B&W805's but they sounded harsh in the midrange

magic, music, Do not expect to fill an stadium with music but you can transform your living room in a concert hall.

Three steps to high-end 1) Buy a ProAC response 1SC with a good stands. a. Be patient. 2) If your amp do not drive them as you expect: Believe in proacs and go for another one. a. Be patient. 3) If your CDP do not give the necessary good signal the proac needs: Believe in proacs and go for another one. The best you can afford. a. Be patient. b. Work with cables and positioning. If you follow this 3 steps successfully, you understand me. If not, go to step 1. They are simply magic speakers. After a brief shock due to the amount of music, bass included! they produce you will be able to enjoy a meaningful experience.

Strength:

very smooyh and detailed

Weakness:

must have good stands w/ sand or lead shot

I benn on my computer reading all of these reviews. I have demoed and tried almost 75 different types of speakers in my life time from the 200 to 6000$ range. I own and preferr the proac 1sc. It has incredible imaging tight bass on smoooooooooth midrangd for a small speaker. It really shines w/jazz and classical. for those said rock is not a option try alice in chains live cd it will blow you away. Best bang for the buck if you can find a pair used. a little pricey if new but well worth the investment. my system: proc reponse 1sc synergistic x-series speaker cable " " " looking glass cables audible illusions l-1 preamp w amprex tubes. rouge 88 tube amp w tube upgrade cal audio icon mark II w/ 20 bit hdcd power boss upgrade

I decided to go with SC.. what a big difference! also try proac reference 8, nice details but it was too harsh for me.

Strength:

Musical, involving

Weakness:

setup, revealing

The Ones Sc''s are simply one of the most open, involving mini''s available. Set up requires the 4 pillar stands from Target or Atlantis of course filled with sand lead shot. Sitting position is VERY important (surprised no other reviewer has mentioned this!) You must have the ear around 1/3 to half way down the speaker cabinet whilst sitting in you listening chair.....ProAc manual suggests this. Most demos in have it all wrong, the last one at Stereo Exhange in NYC, sitting the chair there my ears were above top of cabinet, way too high! result is no midrange bloom, thin sound and soundstage suffers! Anyway onto electronics and sound. Use whatever you''d like and what you put into the One Sc''s is what will come out, clearly! be prepared to spend some cash cause you''ll be trying different things trying to get them to sound right. You can hear the differences between, Kimber PBL and Silver Streak, between Audioquest Midnight and Clear, CAL and Sony CD players etc. Now the Ones Sc''s present music I think as it was recorded, just a little sweeter than the master tape, but man are they fun to listen to! I found rock records and cd''s a blast to listen too, Hendrix soars, Pink Floyd very involving, Zep rocks! This speaker doesn''t really prefer any certain type of music.....that last review was nonsense and pure snobbery stating ProAc''s can''t rock, oh well his opinion, not mine. By the way here what I have used with the One Sc''s, and by the way you see I have 2 other pairs of ProAc''s also so I am somewhat of a fanatic! Cd player - Sony x707es...excellent TT - Rega 9 with an Exact, nice. Preamps - Sonic Frontiers Line One, Musical Fidelty Nu Vista, Creek 4330, MAD Designs Octal 6....Motif phono Stage, real nice. Amps - Anthem Amp One ....excellent with all the small ProAc''s, Creek 4330, Musical Design D75....awesome, Kenwood receiver from 1978 (KA7100,,don''t laugh it''s really nice sounding) Audion Silver Night 300B mono''s...overated sold them. Cables Audioquest Clear2, Kimber PBJ, SS and Musical Design Aura, Goertz M1. Absolute Power Cords, Tice Solo PC.
