Strength:

Loud. Not too expensive. An alright party speaker but you will soon blow them up trying to get the "punch" they look like they should be able to deliver.

Weakness:

Very weak and flabby mid-bass. Nonexistent high treble. Quite bad imaging. These are one of the worst speakers I've heard off axis. The sound just collapses.

Just to set some of the other reviews here straight, these are good speakers but by no means great speakers, even at the price. They do everything okay, but have glaring weaknesses in the mid-bass and upper treble. While fairly musical, the wishy washy imaging and laid back dynamics make music sound compressed and unfocussed. Even pop and dance suffer from the lack of impact which is odd considering the sheer size and heft of the cabinets. Funny enough, well recorded acoustic music fairs the best, although still lacks that sparkle you get from many other competing models. If you can get them used cheap, say under $300 that's about all they're worth. If you're even a little bit of an audiophile you can skip these entirely. Any of the new Energy or Paradigm entry floorstanders will mop the floor with these. Try the Energy C-4, or C-6 used, the eXL-26, or even the new C-5. All are FAR superior in every way.

Similar Products Used:

Energy Veritas 2.1, 2.3, C-2, C-4, C-6, B&W DM602, DM603, Paradigm 11se, many others.

I've just purchased the PSB 1000s after listening to several other speakers. They sound great (much better than Boston Acoustics and a little better than the Paradigm Studio Reference 100s.) The only complaint I have is that they could use a little more bass. I may have been able to buy a better pair of speakers, but I would have had to sell my car to do it.

Having just had my 2nd child I had to sell my PSB 500s, stand speakers just not capable of being truly child proofed and went with a pair of Klipsch 1.1 to put on the wall. While they mated well with my Velodyne F1200 the sound wasn't up to my standards. I gave them over a month to get used to the sound, but I really missed the air and neutrality of the PSBs, particularly with voice. Thanks to the wonderful and understanding crew at the local hi-fi shop (Stellar Stereo) I traded them back and got a demo pair of PSB 1000is for a little extra cash, which as floor standing speakersw can be made baby proof with sufficient care. I was a little worried that the new i series wouldn't have the same timbre as my PSB 100c center channel, but was sooo wrong. I love em!!!!
The sound is perfect when run "straight" from my receiver (no high pass filtering from receiver or sub) and that isn't a term I've ever used before about speakers. I know that I could have spent a lot more money to get the sound I wanted but my ears kept telling me that I didn't have to. Call me a PSB fanatic, it's a label I'll wear proudly. I love the whole line, and truly believe you can't beat the performance for anywhere near the same price level.

We are all looking for the ultimate high definition speaker at the "BRAGAIN PRICE". Was in the toronto area looking at some of these so called" boxes ofsound" and was anxious to see and hear what was out there on the market.
Had a couple of brand names and models in mind and went off hunting to see
what i can find at a modest price range. The two brand names and models
that i was most interested in were the NHT 2.5i and the def. tech. BP8. I listened
to both speakers with the same music and found the def. BP8 to be the winner
of the match. Had one more place to go though and i thaught i had the cat in the bag. WRONG! Round Two-- Went to AMERICAN SOUND OF CANADA
in Richmond Hill , Ont. and was shocked at what came out of these attractive
and well constructed "sound boxes". I was listening to the psb 1000i floor standing speaker!!! The frequency response 45-20,000Hz. these are indeed
celeberity speakers!!! The treble and base performance was excellent i knew
right away i had a winner here. I was scared to ask for the price and thinking
there super sounding and the cosmetics of the speaker looked expensive.
When the sales lady said that these speakers are going for $800 canadian
i was very "SHOCKED" that these speakers were that affordable and didn't
have to break the bank.I also compared these speakers to the psb stratus
silver's and couln't justify the $600 in sound difference I have now bi-wired
these speakers at home and they sound even better. The bass has even more
bass and the treble sounds great I know that there are alot of hi end loud
speakers out there but the law of deminishing returns to signify the price
difference on some is hard to comprehend..PSB CANADA a great canadian product!!!!! TWO THUMBS UP!!

Good luck trying to find a better speaker in this price range. It had been 18 years since I had bought speakers. Thanks to this web page and some very serious shopping, I ended up with the PSB 1000. For anyone interrested in home theatre I have the 1000's up front, 200i center and Century 300 for the rear, powered by Harmon Kardon 80 series 2. It is fantastic!I

What is good sound? I've had many speakers during my time as an Audio enthusiast, from the PSB800i, which really was a GREAT speaker to Jamo, almost not worth mentioning. But the speaker that have impressed me most is the PSB1000. It hits the different tones very accurate, and produces no noice at all. I just love the sound of it! The best buy, you get much more for your money here than any other speaker.

I've spend many hours the last years, trying to find a speaker with great sound to a reasonable price. I've found it in PSB 1000! The sound from this speaker can easily compete with much more expensive models as the Silver, but you won't find a better buy!

After 20 years of non-stop uses my PSB Passif 1 needed a well-deserved rest. I was afraid I would not be able to find a speaker that compared to the Passif 1 for a price I could afford. I listened to a lot of different speaker at a lot of different prices and finally bought the PSB 1000i. I now have listened to them for two weeks and they sound better every day. The salesmen told me the 1000i were discontinued and that this was his last pair so I could have them for $800.00. I have since found out that the 1000i's were not so much discontinued as promoted to the Status line as the Stratus Bronze. I have been a PSB fan for 20 years and the PSB 1000i just renewed what I have always know Paul Bartons is a genius.
