Strength:
Musical, uncolored, high-quality sound for a reasonable non-audiophile price.
Weakness:
I felt that binding posts could have been a bit more robust. I bought these speakers recently based on many of the reviews I've read and based on auditions. Let's be honest, had I $1700 to spend on each speaker, I probably would have gone with a different speaker, but based on what I heard with these speakers, I honestly don't think I could have found a more uncolored sound for the price. These speakers have a suprisingly full sound for the size of the cabinet. I looked at similar speakers in the price range (Infinity, Polk, Klipsch) and just found the PSB's the best sound for the money. They are quite musical and have allowed me to hear detail in my own music that was lacking in both my old system, and in other speakers I auditioned. Music auditioned was Macy Gray, Jonny Lang, Yo-Yo Ma, 8 1/2 Souveniers, DMB, Ben Folds Five. I couldn't be happier. One thing I would say to those who say the bass isn't big enough, try corner-loading these speakers. Unless you have a massive room or like your belly to quiver (which also tends to alienate the neighbors), these speakers should have plenty of bass. I bought these speakers primarily for music, so I've not lamented my lack of a subwoofer for a moment. Bass accuracy is spectacular, though a sub would help with added punch for movie fanatics. Even still, added punch doesn't seem necessary to me, even for the movies. I also listened to the 3T's and wouldn't recommend them unless you do have a sub as the decreased cabinet size really takes away from richness of sound, especially at the low end. For purposes of comparison, I am using an Integra 5.3 surround reciever (which is essentially the Onkyo txsr600 with a 3-year warranty), 12 guage Monster Cable speaker wire, and a Sony CD changer with an optical connection. Similar Products Used: Infinity IL30's and IL40's, Polk Audio (don't remember models), Klipsch (again, don't remember models), PSB 3T's. |

Strength:
Sound quality, tightness, build quality
Weakness:
None (in my opinion) After giving up on Klipsch, I decided to try these, and I''m very pleased with them. Separation is outstanding as noted in other reviews, highs are crisp and clean, mids (for my tastes) are present but not overbearing, and the bass is very tight. Plus, they''re one of the best looking speakers I''ve ever owned. Similar Products Used: Klipsch KG series, JBL |

Separation, range and versatilty is remarkable! The perfect combination of authentic sound reproduction, size, styling and price. My wife wanted to "hide" the speakers until I brought home the PSB towers. Similar Products Used: JBL |

Strength:
Flat muscial reproduction. Great horizontal and back/foward imaging. They play all kind of music well and the musical information is brought to the fore. There are no recessed sounds at all.
Weakness:
Depending on the music, sometimes the tweeter cannot handle some piano notes. I have only heard the tweeter crack up a little on track 3 of Enya''s, Watermark CD, and on track 2 of Steve Kindler''s,Pradise Lost CD. Maybe it''s all of my outdated dusty, and moldy equipment? Definetly, not the best at veritical imaging. Don''t get me wrong here. The do image well veritcally but the veritcal imaging range is not to the degree of the depth and horizontal imaging that the 4T''s deliver. Stay seated. I have had these speakers since June 2001, and I am absouletly certain they are hard to beat for price:performance. I purchased these speakers soley on the many reviews listed on this web site, and would like to thank everyone who has contributed their written evaluations of PSB products, especially the 4T''s. Now on to the review.... These are the best speakers I have ever owned, no question about it. For having such a small footprint, their presence can be felt as well as heard. In my opionion, the 4T''s are right on the cusp of being an audiophile grade speaker. The human voice is reproduced effortlessly and accurately, bass extenstion is profound, quick, not boomy but tight, mids are fabulous and the high end handles most of what you want to throw at it without breaking up. To summarize this speaker peformance in a nutshell: No coloration--They do perform flat and musical! That is my preference. I could ramble on forever about these speak''s but there is nothing I could add to these reviews that the 4T''s have not already been praised for. I do not own any "audiophile grade" equipment. I drive the 4T''s with an alive and well, NAD 7220PE receiver (20 watts x2 continuous RMS), Sony CDP-397, monster cable interconnects between the CD player and the NAD. The speaker wire is 12 guage vampire wire and I do have the speakers bi-wired. The wire is so old that "black mold" can be seen growing inside, visable through the clear casing. I know, I know, I need to upgrade quick. It''s on the agenda. I have no reference recordings, per se. However, here is a list of CD''s that I enjoy listening to. These recordings, though not considered to be audiophile benchmark''s are nevertheless musical to ME and will reveal the musical prowess of the 4T''s: KD Lang-Ingenue-Vocals/Bass on Track 1 & 5. Vocals/Piano on track 8. Everything on track 10. Various Artists(Wyndham Hill lable)-In Search of Angels-BMG D105885. Tracks 1-5, female vocals, piano, and synthesizers. Dave Koz-Lucky Man, Track 1, there is a lot of energy in this track and the 4T''s play it all without leaving you wanting. Track 6- Male vocals, lot''s of sax, of course, and delicate highs played faithfully. Steve Kindler-Paradise Lost. Track 1, lot''s of synthesizer. Track 2, Bass, Bass, Violin, synthesizer, more bass. Strains the tweeter a bit. Similar Products Used: Speakers-ECI Super8''s, Bose 901 Series 3, Bose 501 Series 2, JBL studio monitors (I forget the model#), Boston Acoustics A-60 series 2, Mirage M-290I, Def Tech BP-10''s. Strength:
Bass
Weakness:
Bass a little fat, but could be room/wires/placement I use these speakers solely for home theater. They are, for the money, spectacular. I've yet to get the subsonic 6 (on order), but other than the deepest low frequencies (below 30Hz), this speaker shines. Hard to believe such wonderful sound could come from a speaker that costs so little. Music DVDs are excellent, a joy to listen to. Highly recommended. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Slim design, clarity on HT as well as classical music.
Weakness:
without a sub, bass is limited. As the main speakers to a total PSB Image HT, these are great for the $$. As a classical musician, hey definitly make an orchestra or jazz group sound the best. Similar Products Used: none |

Strength:
Crisp clear sound
Weakness:
Lacking a little bass These speakers produce stunning sound in their price range for both music and home theater. In addition, they are very visually appealing. I would highly recommend them for the money. The bass seems a bit lacking but for the size of the speakers I wouldn't expect any more. The rest of my system consists of a Yamaha RX-V595a receiver with a PSB 8C center channel. I plan to get a subwoofer to complete the system. |

Strength:
In auditioning it, it did have good bass extension for its small size and nice imaging.
Weakness:
I did not like the sound of these because they sounded "boxy." They truly sounded like each speakeritself, was inside another box. The step-up from my old, modest, BIC Venturi II's from 1978 was not large enough to justify blowing my forthcoming Uncle Sam tax rebate. I'll save a little longer for some Vandersteen 2Ce's. |
