PSB Speakers Image 6T Floorstanding Speakers

PSB Speakers Image 6T Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

This powerful combination of three 6.5-inch woofers and the Image tweeter takes the impact of music and movies to peak levels. It is hard to imagine any likely use in any likely home listening/viewing room that will stress this speaker or cause it to lose any of its "you are there" detail. This is a speaker for high demands, even in big listening rooms.

Strength:

Beautiful sounding and looking! Great price.

Weakness:

None.

Well after 5 months of waiting the 6T's finally arrived. It was worth the wait, WOW! Very detailed with stunning clarity, excellent imaging and thunderous bass! I had to turn the Sub off for listening to music. I have the 6T's, 2B's for rear channel, 9C (center) and the Subsonic 6 powered by an NADT770. I am extremely pleased with this combination for music and home theatre.

Strength:

Suprising Bass, Imaging

Weakness:

None so far

First of all I want ot preface everything by letting everyone know that I live in an apartment. That being said, I've had these speakers for a couple of days and they sound great. I'm still a novice at HT but they sound incredible to me. I was shocked by the bass that came from these speakers. I'm talking about shake the floors bass. It's a good thing I have concrete walls. I have a fairly large living room and they fill the entire space. The imaging is also superb, it's like watching my movies all over again. This was my first big purchase and I am completly satisfied. I would recommend this speaker to any one who lives in an apartment or has a small HT space.

Strength:

Clean sound, Solid Bass, great mids. Aluminum tweeter is smooth and clear, not harsh like my old acoustic research 308HOs

Weakness:

DO NOT LET UPS SHIP THEM! one of my towers came with massive internal damage.

Just picked up a pair from www.hificiti.com for about $850 US after tax and shipping, but to my surprise, one tower was, how shall I put this... OWNED BY UPS. One of the magnets from the 6 1/2" woofers was detached and floating loose in the enclosure. I felt sick, wanted to hurt the UPS driver since this is the 3rd time he has ruined a HT package. but after a smoke and a soda, I was on the phone with hificiti. I can not say enough about their excelent customer support, Instead of the usual "Call ups and have them issue a damage call, send us back the speaker and you will get a replacement in 6 to 8 weeks", I got "O.K. I'l get on the phone with UPS, have them pick up the speaker, and I'l ship you a new one today.

Not to be totally devistated I decided to hookup the good tower to my work system, a sony DE845 receiver with Kimber 4VS speaker cables, I shifted the sound balance all the way over to the right and fired it up.

The sound from this single, non-broken-in tower was amazing, I have been using a pair of Acoustic research 308HO bookshelves at home, and this single PSB 6t simply blew them away, solid bass, a clean smooth mid, and wonderful highs from the aluminum 1" tweeter.

Mer De Noms by a perfect circle came to life, I had seem them in concert about 2 weeks earlier, and the reproduction was excelent. For the price, $850 shipped (maybe less if you look) I have yet to hear a better tower. Trust me and go have a listen to the PSB Image lineup.

5 stars for value, 4 overall. nothings perfect, and not for $850.

Strength:

Great sound for the money. Powerful front speakers for a HT system.

Weakness:

Fairly large and bulky. Only come in black or cherry finish.

I just purchased the PSB Image 6T's and could not be happier with my purchase. I wanted to put together a nice HT/Music system and stay somewhat reasonable as far as price goes. I did some shopping around, as noted above, and found PSB speakers to give me the best "bang for my buck."
The sound is warm and full and the highs from the aluminum tweeters are incredible without sounding harsh or shrill. The 6T's put out a TON of bass, which may be overkill to some, but I prefer a sound with a nice, deep bass. Midranges are not as impressive as the lows and highs, but they are certainly present and accounted for. I listened to the 5T's and 6T's side by side in an A-B demo and found that in my humble opinion, the 6T's seemed to fill the room a bit more easily and provided a bit more warmth when listening to music.
HT is where the 6T's absolutely shined. With Tarzan loaded up on the DVD, we watched/listened to the opening sequence (Phil Collins song) and the baboon chase. The 6T's absolutely blew me away. This is where the difference between the 5T's and the 6T's was most pronounced in a side-by-side comparison. During the opening sequence, there were a ton of things going on, and the 6T's along with the 8C center, Subsonic 6 and 1B rears were able to separate each one, keeping sounds positioned correctly within the room and not allow anything to get lost in the shuffle. Phil Collins was singing, babies were crying, bushes were rustling, and thunder and lightning was rumbling and crackling. During the baboon chase, I was amazed at the bass the 6T's put out, which complemented the Subwoofer as trees fell and the stampede of baboons rumbled.
I listened to the B&W's (602's and 603's), and quite honestly, I was not that impressed, especially for the price. I enjoyed the full, powerful sound of the DefTech BP30's, but they too were rather pricey and being bi-polars, would require perfect positioning in the room. The Paradigms would have been my second choice behind the PSB's. I enjoyed the Studio 20's and 40's and the Monitor 9's. However, I feel that the 6T's outperformed all of them, especially as front speakers in a HT setup. I picked the 6T's up for $725 for the pair, which I felt was a very fair deal.
The bottom line is this - buy whichever speaker system sounds the best to you and fits in your price range. For me, this was the PSB 6T's and the rest of my system detailed below. For you, it might not be. My only advice is to go out there and LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN. YOU are the one who will be listening to the system on a daily basis. So heed the advice and warnings of others, but let your ears make your decision.

My system:
Marantz SR-7000 Receiver
PSB Image 6T's (fronts)
PSB Image 8C (center)
PSB Image 6.1R's (rears - custom ceiling mounted)
PSB Subsonic 6
Pioneer DV-525 (nice DVD/CD player for the price)
Sony Wega 36" Flat Screen TV
Tributaries cables

Strength:

The 6Ts have a very natural clean sound. The frequency response on these towers drop down to 27Hz...not too shabby. The price is ridiculously low in relation to the quality of build and sound that you get in return. One other note: I really liked that PSB provided rubber feet for hard wood floors and spikes for carpet.

Weakness:

This isn't a perfect speaker, but for this price...none.

These speakers are incredible! My wife and I have immediately noticed detail to where previously there had been none. I haven't noticed any lacking in the mid-range as some have reported. They sound full-bodied to me. The bass is quite impressive and the imaging is unrivaled for the cost of these towers. The sales rep that I purchased these from noted that according to Paul Barton (the designer/owner of PSB) the Image 6T's have replaced the Stratus Bronze in his mind as the tower to buy if a budget is an issue. To be honest, I would have paid another $700 more if they had said that was what they would sell them to me for.

These towers might be overkill for people who are primarily music listeners. I'd probably point you toward the 4 or 5Ts. Those speakers don't have quite the bass response, but that isn’t as much of an issue if you really wish to mainly listen to Pop, Rock, Jazz, etc... However, for the HT, these towers reign supreme. These towers mated with the 9C and the 10S's is unbeatable. I have to watch all of my movies over again because I know I've missed so much.

Listen to the B&W's and Paradigm. They were the closest in quality that I heard. Obviously, I enjoyed the PSB Towers more, but I'd say those three were my top choices. The B&W's lacked detail in the lower range and were a bit bright. The B&W's would be better at music than the 4 or 5T's if it was mated with a mellow sounding receiver, but not for the price difference. The differences were pretty negligible. The Paradigm's were right there with the 6T's but the price difference was substantial.

The long and short of it is, there are better speakers out there but those speakers run $1000 - 2000 more. At the very least, take a listen, you won't be sorry.

Strength:

Fantastic bass response. Nice punch. Clear, accurate high reproduction. Outstanding sound at very high volume. Nice looking speaker with or without grills.

Weakness:

These speakers might be too big for some households. The cabinets are very deep...20+ inches from front to back.

Recently I sold a pair of original B&W LM1 monitors and purchased the PSB Image 6Ts from an online electronics store. The huge boxes containing the PSBs arrived via UPS undamaged, and I quickly set them up as I had sold my prized B&Ws days earlier. The B&W sound made me very critical of other speaker manufacturers and speaker designs, so I prepared myself to not be "wowed" by the PSBs. I was delightfully surprised to hear the quality and clarity that was offered by my little B&Ws, along with a truckload of much needed bass! The PSBs benefit from proper speaker placement. The sound was compressed, but enjoyable when I placed the PSBs too close together, with less clear imaging when I placed them too far apart. Either way, they still sounded great...but once the proper speaker distance, setup, and toe-in was achieved, the sound was simply stunning! These speakers like a quick break-in period, and they seem to sound better and better each time I listen. Although I do not have a multi-speaker Home Theatre setup in my listening room, I must say that I do not miss other speakers. These two PSB Image 6Ts are more than sufficient to fill the room with quality Home Theatre sound, and liven up even the most lackluster programs. Listen to PSB, and in particular, the 6T. You will not be disappointed! Check out PSB at (www.psbspeakers.com).
